Anyone got a good chrome shop near Ft.Wayne, In. I took a NICE set of 40 Ford coupe window moldings to a shop in the Fort and when they shot me a $1100.00 price quote I think a turd rolled out my pant leg. I quickly kicked it under the nearest table, took my moldings and ran. I might be out of touch with current chome prices, what do you guy and gals think. This was for the rear, 2 side, 2 quarter, and windsheild trims. OH ya and they are booked out 9-10 weeks.
chrome USED to be cheep... until they started closing them down .... some EPA crap .. something about the acid messing up the water table ... i knew of at least 4 that had to move out of state in CAL. that was around 25 years ago... now ,, all the chrome shops that i found wants your right arm and your left nut... for the price of chrome to do a older car ,, you can buy a brand new car... and what would be the fun in that ??? SOOOOO i guess that mine will will be done in paint ....bumpers ,,, molding,, probably even wiper arms ..WHAT A SHAME ...
Stu, it is the inner moudings, they are steel. They where chromed in the 70's. We just thought a rechrome would go nice with new paint and interior. The thing my dad brought up is you can buy a damn nice chrome 55 Chevy front bumper for half that.
Gotcha. I had some inner window trim done many years ago, and the chrome guy said it's very dangerous buffing that stuff. He said there are many one arm platers who thought they could do it. Maybe the risk factor adds to the $$$? Stu
The prices are crazy, I asked Advanced while at Cobo Hall, about a quick price to replate my model A radiator shell, and they said $600-700 !! I could get 5 repops for that!.......of course none of them would fit
You could ,but none of them would be as nice. Advanced isn't cheap but the quality of their work reflects that.
I'll second Advanced Plating quality. Won't be cheap but you get what you pay for. Either chrome them properly or paint. Don't do cheap plating, it will come back to bite ya in the butt later on down the road. Advanced Plating www.advancedplating.com 1425 Cowan Court Nashville, TN 37207-5628 (615) 227-6900
We got a trunk load of stuff quoted in Nashville and the price / lead time was thru the roof. We did find a place in Adamsville, TN (Buford Pusser) that we are trying. The quotes were 2/3 less than anybody we found and the that I seen that they did before was just as great as anybodies. Danny's Polishing. I think they have a website. I will give feedback on them later.
I toured JR Custom Plating in Forest Lake, MN on Wednesday night with a bunch of buddies and was WAY impressed with their work and attention to detail. They get stuff sent from other chrome shops out of state all the time. They are the go-to guys! http://jrcustomplating.com/
Get a hold of ChromePlaterJosh here on the HAMB. They have a chrome plating shop in Hagerstown, IN. I haven't had anything done but their work looks great and they're great people.
Thanks! We are about a 2hr drive south of Fort Wayne. Turnaround time right now is 7-8 weeks as we are quite busy at the moment. As stated above, garnish mouldings present more danger than is typical. Anything that forms a loop does actually. Made worse is the fragile nature of the thin-walled steel construction. I'm not familiar with your parts, so I can't tell if that is a normal price or not. With that many pieces, it sounds like a good price. You can bring them down here and get a free quote; I'll do it personally if you ask for me.
Probably about right, my experiences have led to the old saying you get what you pay for. But I didnt think that the price would be that high.
Try Advanced Custom Chrome. www.advancedcustomchrome.com Nice work. Reasonable price for the quality. Jon Wright's Custom Chrome is awesome but slow and expensive.
wow, even with California crack down on platers there are some really good ones out here. I found prices to very reasonable and fast service at San Joaquin Chrome in Lodi, CA. just be careful who you deal with. a few years back I took the upper grill surround for a '54 Chevy to one of those swap meet bumper guys. after a month or so I asked about my part. well about 2 weeks later the same type of chromed part showed up that they said was mine-was not. never did get mine back, and still had to pay. lots of chrome work done in Mexico.
Do you know anybody in Mexico? One of my fellow club members employer takes all there stuff to be chrome and cadmium plated down there. My 58 Bel-Air bumper, 59 Chevy truck grill, turn signal housing and headlight bezels hitched a ride down there and were triple chrome platted. Everything came out really really nice. Grand total- $500.00.. They don't have to worry about all this E.P.A bullshit and the labor is cheap. For once I scored on a deal.
I guess it is, I have heard of a few other people go down there with out any connections and just visit a few chrome shops, when they found one they felt comfortable with they went back with there parts and came back very happy.
I second that...JOSH is a good guy that takes pride in what he does and will give you an HONEST evaluation of your parts. Besides, he's a HAMBER !
Not real close to you, but they are really good about setting up shipping, both ways, and have a really fast turn around time. Prices are very reasonable, and they do flawless work. They've done some of mine, and I've been very happy with the results. Just follow the link.http://www.dipitnow.com/ (Be sure to look at their pricing policy, you'll love it)
Again thanx for the feed back, probably will try to take them down to Josh, Mexico is mighty appealing but no such "hook-up" avalible and this is my Dads pride and joy, he has owned it since 68'. When I used to drive it to school or around town he told me "if you wreak it don't come home". I know full well he would have went completly nuts. He would not trust any "hook-up" he did not personly know.
