  1. No front tag in Oklahoma since 1938.

I got pulled over in Utah once for not having a front tag, even though I had a valid OK plate on the rear. I explained to the very young state patrol officer that not all states require two tags, and that Oklahoma is one of the one-tag states. He apologized and said "Enjoy your stay in Utah, Sir." No arguments, no hassle, just enlightenment of the unaware.

Cali gets tons of cash revenue, the problem is like most, the state blows the cash on crap. Funny we dont ever get to vote on this shit. Next they'll be giving tickets if they catch you picking your nose on the freeway...............

I've run my daily driver without a front plate for the last 12 years and have never been pulled over or cited. I've lived in 3 difference CA cities during that time. Based on the current fiscal environment and the new fine amount though, I think I'll have to consider taking my front plate off the garage wall and throwing it on my truck.

  4. 20 yrs now w/ no front license plate OR outside mirror. Thankfully I haven't been cited for either. I think it has to be under 95 decibels. I've heard some cops have equipment to record the sound readings. Possibly a scare tactic. Not sure..

Cameras sending information to a computer to issue citations. ‘Eavesdropping’, ‘Window peeking’, by the ‘guv’ment. Ha.

As a deputy sheriff, often the no front license plate is also associated with no front bumper or lack of other body or mechanical parts which can be a problem. I agree with the posts that that most cops are car guys and will let you go with a warning rather than a citation. Here in WA it is only a $124 by the way. If you want it changed, and think that others will support it, talk to your legislator, thats what they are for. Otherwise as a responsible citizen, obey the law, put a front plate on and wait for them to change the law. Oh by the way, Timothy MCVeigh was stopped for having his front plate hanging by only one screw. Quite frankly I think it is worth it.

That SHOULD be a ticket-able offense

  8. There was a guy out here that flipped off the cops. That technically is not illegal, but not wise. They followed him a little until he did something that they could stop him for..
Didn't take long, so they stopped him. He had multiple pounds of pot in his car. They went to his house and found a pretty big grow operation.
    What a dumbass.
kinda like that Afroman song..I coulda kept my brain and not done something stupid..but then I got high..
I changed the first part, but the end part is the song.

Here where I live I've been pulled over for no front plate more than anything except for dim tail lights on the 48.

Once in my daily at the time with the bumper with plate mounted on it laying in the back because I was working on the fender.

Right now the parking enforcement brigade in Portland Or is said to be hell on wheels on no front plate. At least on high end exotic cars parked down town.

At least here in Washington we can run collector plates and the state only issues one so it looks like the 48 may get a collector plate this time around. I'm not big on that but it's better than paying tickets.

this happened to my dad the other day. it was a 1 ton truck and they said it wasnt visible from the behind. "its kind of hard to miss it in the middle of the bumper there" and the ticket was somewhere around the high 100's

  13. they will stop you if you have a trailer ball "blocking" a number on the plate too.
Just an excuse to check you out.

so run a front plate and spend the 178 dollars on hotrod parts....

  15. Oklahoma has a faint bar-code on the bottom right of the new-style 2010 tag. It is intended for law enforcement to "read" your plate (I thought that is what those big-ass letters and numbers were for, but what do I know!). A state lawmaker caught the Tax Commission in a BIG lie when they claimed that bar-code was to "keep track of tag inventory" and he raised hell about it. Especially after a different lawmaker proposed a new law just before that little revelation, that would ban all forms of tag frames, so that LE could scan that bar-code, from what the State says is up to 1000 feet away!

Every year, they keep proposing going to a two-tag system, which they claim is for "public safety" and to "save money" (banging out twice the number of plates saves money, right!), but of course, it's so they can start installing red light cameras and get your pic and tag. Fortunately, that measure gets knocked down before it reaches committee!

Lyin', thievin' bastards, they are! Anything for revenue generation!

Things are definitely changing. Recently someone peeled off my wife's registration sticker on her suburban. She has been stopped three times in two weeks by cops who noticed it. I have to wait until the last week of the monht to get a new one because the DMV is only open on the last Friday and I can't make it in there on the other days due to work. By comparison, my brother and I used to have an informal contest to see who could go the longest without putting the sticker on ( we licensed our cars, just never put the sticker on) and I once went more than one year before getting stopped. BTW, niether our Suburban or my Mustang has front plates, but I likely get away with it due to our rural area and the fact I drive and act like an adult these days.

  18. .
The cops are bad here in Austin!! They are almost on every corner, and will ticket for anything they can. I Have friends who have told me that they have pretty much been ordered to generate revenue. It is almost like Nazi Germany here, Mandatory blood draws. It is getting really bad when the State starts violating you civil rights.
I have always run Year of Manufacture plates on every car I have built. So it isn’t so bad running a front plate. Glad we can still do that, and it has not been outlawed yet.

Come drive here in Oregon... The cops don't seem to want to enforce several of the driving laws. We have a 'Fog Light Law" that never gets attention from the cops. People use these lights all the time, the law reads that they are the same as your bright lights. We also have a cell phone law that doesn't get enforced. We have tailgaters that don't get stopped.... the list goes on and on.
The police are too busy attending to accidents!!!!

So.... a front license plate? I don't run one and I'm not worried a bit about getting stopped. They have enough to do clearing up wrecks.

  23. My friend was driving his "Shitbox Pickup" and was stopped by the Police.

The officer asked my friend "Where's the front license plate?" And he said "on the bumper"... so the officer walked towards the front of the truck and then asked him "Where's the front bumper...?" and he said at home right in the driveway where it fell off..!

The officer shook his head and gave him a warning! Hahaha... must've been some sight... seeing the look on his face!

  24. OK so now everyone is obeying the law and no tickets are being issued, now what are they going to go after? this state has turned into a shit box!

These states only require one rear plate.

Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, West Virginia.

That leaves about 30 that do require two plates- front and back.

Several of single plate states are changing their laws or considering changing their laws in the next few years. I would assume because of the red light ticket cams......

I was talking red light cameras with a cop buddy one day and he also told me not to send it in. He said since it's a private company issuing the citation, it doesn't become valid until you send it to the court. If you mail it in, you're essentially turning yourself in.

The few front plate tickets I've had were fix-its but I haven't had one since the 90s when I got my YOM plates.

Wow - a lot of people from outside California posting about what goes on in their state - still trying to figure out what relevance this has to California, which is what the original post was about.

Just put a front plate on the Willys gasser and it looks like shit. I ordered a retractable license plate kit so it only offends when I am driving and I don't have to look at it when I am out of the car.

  28. Does it matter? The same shit goes on in all 50 States, plus DC, the territories & possessions, to one extent or another; so would you rather see 50+ separate threads about each state, then?

I love discussions like this. I'm envious of the folks that are so passionate about such a trivial issue. I guess I wish my life was so trouble-free that having to run a front license plate would be such a big issue to me that it warranted such energy.
