In the last few years I have seen alot of cars that scare the hell out of me. I wonder sometimes what people are thinking when the put cars together, that are just not safe to drive. Someone or some group needs to step up and start saying something....... Now about the "PRIDE". I have been checking out some hamber's projects and they have put alot of pride in there work and turning out some really nice cars. I want to thank everyone that posts pics of there projects in progress, and showing there pride. Looking back to the 40's and 50's people had alot of pride when they made parts, built cars and so on... Its time to step up and show a little pride. This is not ment to piss anyone off, and if it gets bad fill free to delete thanks RC
Very well said! I agree, there is waytoo much crap out there and not enough pride in what people think is OK when they build a car.
some people fail to realize it takes some people yrs to build a car not 4 weeks to throw together junk at the roundup this yr i saw a model a coupe in the parking lot with ooooold bias plys on it that were down to the polyester belts, thank god i didnt have to drive behind him at all
Oh, believe me, some group WILL step up and say something ... they're called Legislators, and when that happens, it will also likely affect those who build and/or own safely built REAL traditional hot rods.
Yep, with the growth of so-called "rat rods" I think the government will step in and overkill the problem by trying to outlaw anything home made.It is in our own interest to make safe, finished cars before big brother polices it for us.Just today I saw a Model A pickup at a get together that would have been better off still sitting in the field rotting instead of driving around with Home Depot hardware where grade 8 should have been.
I now that the NSRA has a safety 23 and NHRA back in the day had safety inspections. Maybe if the hamb did something like that people would take pride in there work. I would help out any way I could, and would host the 1st safety inspection...
I take a lot of pride in my work, be it on my own cars or someone elses. I guess thats why those ratrod piles of shit get on my nerves so bad. No pride there that I can see. When I was younger, I did some questionable (to me) work, because of no money/ tools/ brains. Trying to make something out of nothing. Lame excuse, but at least I learned from my mistakes....
Alot of people building these "suspect" hot rods don't have a father in the rod and custom business and no one to show them the way...That doesn't mean they don't take pride in trying to build their rod themselves..Maybe we could offer to help.........
Ive seen pics of cars that had an open drive shaft, I can only imagine the carnage that would become of a person if it got their jacket, shirt, pants, etc. Remember the lathe accident pics that were floating around. It could be that bad.
I agree fully, theres alot of times I think more experienced guys just want to knock what others do, rather than offer suggestions. I'm young and I know I've unknowingly done things that werent the best idea. And I have buddies that really don't know much, but have alot of heart and alot of pride. They just lack knowledge. I try to help them out what I can. On another note, I really can't stand guys that do stuff thats stupid and unsafe in an attempt to be cool or ratty. I was at a show awhile back and saw a fenderless 40's pick up. It was cobbled together horrible. When I looked inside the seats were mounted on a bar and there was no floor. tranny and driveline right there. Not so much as a loop around the driveline. I said to my brother "you see the drivelin?". Well I was unaware the owner was standing there. He piped up and said "Cool isn't it, a real rat rod". I said oh yeah and walked away. Now I don't have kids yet, but I would NEVER risk their safety like that. Nor my girls, Nor mine for that matter. I hate how the general public thinks its cool to pile shit together and call it a hotrod.
Wow!!! A younger person with brains and common sense! Gettin' tougher to find, every day. This thing may not be dying after all! Great Post
Not all of us young guys like the crap that some folks are building. Some of the rr's I look at I would be ashamed to have people think that that was the best car I could build. The A that my dad & I are building might not be able to compete with a high$$ car or a pro built car but we are doing everything as best as we can. No barbed wire, wrenches used as structural members or tractor parts, but there are a lot of home built parts on it. It ain't shiny yet but will be someday & the only time it had the driveline exposed to the interior was while we were building the floors. The thing that I wonder is how do these cars/trucks get inspected & certified for use on public roads?
You guys should look into the Australian Street Rod Federation's (ASRF) safety inspections. Now if you formed your own you don't have to be as strict and over the top as ours are but they work in conjunction with the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) who run all vehicle registration in Oz. The ASRF inspector checks all aspects of the car, drive line, electricals, engineering, etc, to make sure that everything is safe and will pass our rego laws. Now like I said you guys don't have to be as strict as ours but a body affiliated with the NSRA or as many Hot roding organizational body's (Including the HAMB) could have guys like 'Squirrel' do te checks. Then membership to the organizations can only be granted if the car passes an inspection. This way the body can be assured of passing a safe car on for registration. Maybe the state registration body's can demand a safety certificate from them before they will grant registration to a vehicle? I know it sounds like an infringement of your civil liberty's but would you prefer a little regulation or the entire way of life building Hot Rods to be banned? Think about it guys or we could see more of this.................
I like your new avatar Doc... What your describing is exactly what wally parks and the boys did back in the day to make the streets safe and freindly for hotrods. They formed a club and challenged the local police officers to inspect their cars for safety and the police found the rodders cars were for the most part more safe than the police cars were. There are going to be laws. who makes them is up to you. Are you going to set the high standard or are you going to let someone else with no concern for you do it? "Wow!!! A younger person with brains and common sense! Gettin' tougher to find, every day. This thing may not be dying after all! Great Post"-32ratsass 32... The only common sense I had when young was respect for my elders... ever see second hand Lions when Hub (Robert Duvall) straightens out the hooligans? always respect the grey...
Look at the rr in Doc's pic... Ujoints and driveshafts...in the front! The front axle is a live axle Prolly has a handgrenade shifter handle and if you pulled the pin over 55mph it pulls the key pins out of all the cobbled up connections by cables and the car falls into 100 pieces
I am glad yall understand what I am talking about. I know alot of people are building cars for the first time and have ??? on how to do things and there is alot of good info on the hamb. I donn't want to post pics of cars, because that might piss some people off. What I would like to see is the "COOL" factor taken away from some POS that could kill some body. When I do a car, I want to be safe and also my son. thanks, maybe we could get some thing together....
Looks like a Ford F series 4WD twin I-beam, but the bit that had me on the floor was the TRAILER HITCH BALL JOINT!!! The reason I hate rat rods is that the absolute lack of build quality is crossing over into the rest of the scene. I was at a car show recently and spotted a number of things you never saw before rat rods came to be so popular. Things like flat paint being used to hide bad metalwork and bad panel alignment. Rust bubbles. Metalflake paint jobs with orange peel. Oily fingerprints on the edge of the bonnet. These are all things where people just don't have the care to finish things properly. Sure there are cars at shows that are unfinished, and the urge to drive your projects is strong. We've all done dubious repairs and questionable technical stuff when we didn't know any better, but the difference is that some people want to learn and get it right, and some just don't care. I can't understand why people would spend so much time building something that reflects so badly on themselves and their attitude. I don't mind patina, as long as the car is built properly. But think of this: when you are at a show, which car does everyone wish they had? The "cool looking" rat rod or the slick shiny chromed masterpiece? R.C hit the nail on the head. Pride.
iv seen those too, and with things like cooking pans for floorboards, and a bigblock to boot! Can you imagine what would happen if the front u joint came apart? It would kill the driver! Thats just not common sence!
Yes! It even took me 5 years to finish by bike! I could have pushed it along faster but I know I would have settled on some things which I didn't want to do. Now that it's done, to me its perfect and I wouldn't change anything...I'm damn proud of that! <input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden">
this is why I like looking at the hamb because people on here take pride in their cars and their work. it provides good ideas for young minds to create quality cars. rr are not cool and I dont know what goes threw peoples heads when the make them. I would be ashamed to say I built something so rigged together. I wouldnt drive that thing as a go cart let alone a car. I live in pa and these pos are only going to make it harder to get a title for a car worth driving because their gonna kill someone. Im 21 and I got alot more pride than to use a hitch on my car and think its cool unless Im pulling a trailer.
Diddo on what R.C. said. There is a difference between a well done hot rod and a POC regardless of how shinny it is or isn't! I hope that If you are reading these post's and you are wondering if your car is what's being talked about that you will have enough courage to ask another hot rodder that you know has a great ability in this area to help you. As was mentioned earlier if we can't regulate ourselves the Government will gladly do it and we all know how screwed up they are. And for you experienced aheh,, and older guys.. when a young guys starts bullet riddling you with questions make sure you spend thr time answering them. I can recall when I was in my late teens being made fun of for some of the questions that I asked. How else are you supposed to learn if you don't ask! And you have to remember that there are some people who just don't get it and they are trying look like someone they are not.
Man, is that a twin I beam? Whatever, it's sittin on a trailer hitch!!! And what's the flimsy rod from the 'cowl' doin? It aint carb linkage. WHAT IS THAT?
