I agree with this wholeheartedly, especially the race car numbers on the side of cars that never see a track.

I agree and will add that if a returning vet were to add something to his hotrod it wouldn't include the whole aircraft instrument panel of unneccessary gauges to his dash... that made no sense then and still doesn't now. They might put their groups art on the car somewhere.

I'm building a post war era roadster and will be putting lap belts (a common thing post war hot rodding pilots were then used to) and a cool old comp*** that I got in a box of late 40's military items not because I'm trying to fit a theme... only because it's pretty darn cool in a aesthetic and technical kind-of way.

Way overdone. Airbrush murals of airplanes, kill markings, air force insignias, etc. all look silly on a car.

    Please don't do it.

I have the idea to recreate my great uncles plane. for me it would be a cool thing to do. Especially because its my family.

Find out your Great uncles unit and do a small painting of there squadron art....somewhere small and tasteful on the (dash?..)

Ding ...Ding...Ding! Give this man a scooby snack.

I paint flight jackets as a hobby and have collected them for 15 or so years... so i really pay attention to this stuff.

Look back at your little pages.Yes they used military parts but only in compe***ion cars ...otherwise it's a theme car. Fine if you want to rock that...you car whatever.

    Who cares.

Theme cars remind me of something OCC would do if they built cars. Cheesy!

I like what Chris50 said. I personally hate themed whatever, except for theme parks-they are kind of fun. Build a hot rod. I really like your idea of honoring your great uncle, that is awesome. I like the color idea, and I like the number idea, but I don't like the navy symbol. If you are really all about that, maybe put it small on the decklid or make a roll pan and put it there? There is a rod & custom magazine a few months back and on the cover/main feature theres a deuce roadster that was built by a younger guy that was based on WWII warbirds, and he nailed it on the head. that car was amazing, I thought it was perfect. It wasn't necessarily "themed" but you could see he had only pictures of P-32s, P-51, B-17s in his garage for inspiration. Check out that car. Just my opinion, I like your inspiration.

Never understood the need for a 'theme' on a car.

I will say yes, it's overdone, it was overdone when the first car was finished :D.

  16. Which big designer had an airplane themed car, Foose?

I think if you do a bomber seat, interesting steering wheel, small things like that, it shows that you are incorporating some interesting influences. Painting bombs on the side, etc., bomber pinups on the side, all that too much.

I agree entirely. The themed roadster at this years grand nationalroadster show was just ugly.
    Nice work but ugly

  18. The P32 car right...

  19. how about ill do it blue, and Jeff, ill buy you a plane ticket to come out here and paint the dash for me, now that sounds like a deal, ill even make you a sandwich when you get here!

  20. ya maybe theme isnt the right word to describe it, maybe "ww2 inspired"

But i agree, from the start of this thread to now, i have a better idea of what would look good, in my head.

My base has always been less is more, be as subtle as you can with paint and images/decals/whatever they are called, especially with fabricating (i wouldnt do any to make it look like a plane, no propeller or wings, haha), but i think like jeff said, it might be best if only i know what the ww2/family reference is, unless asked to explain it.

well thanks for the imput, i definenelty am glad i asked

Most WWII combat veterans didn't want to think about their war experiences after they came home. They want to finally buy a nice car and marry the girl they left behind. The closest thing to a theme they wanted was apple pie, mom and home, sweet home. There was a lot of war surplus stuff, like gauges and seat belts that were used, but there was NO theme cars...

I'm still waiting for someone to attach stubby Corsair wings to a '32 roadster...then the theme would be completed and done.

It's overdone...and there really is no good reason to continue it ( I'm still chuckling about the TA with the Khaki green camo paint and the Flying Tigers grin). THAT is done and overdone.

While I was building the '36, I had in my head I was going to do a little warbird stuff. Maybe a little nose art, the Spitfire sharkmouth graphic on the louvers below the hood, a little pinup girl, or whatever. Then, like you I had second thoughts. The first time you see it, it's cool. Then, a hundred guys screw up the idea by going WAY overboard, and it's over.

Once you've got doubts, you already know the answer!
