Quartering it means to cut the roof down the middle lenghways and sideways, ending up with four pieces. Then you would have to weld a strip of metal in to fill the gaps that would be left in the middle. Alot of welding.

Looks good! My son (3 yrs old) has a 51 F1 that I put together this year so we can cruise it to the local car shows and to get him hooked like me. I keep saying that I will wait for him to get older so he can help do the chop, section and stretch but I really want to chop it sooner than later. This thread just fuels the fire;) What I have planned to start with is about a 3" chop and a 4" door stretch taking 4" out of the front of the bed. I was also thinking of leaning the rear of the cab forward about 1" and adjusting the door tops the same to just give a little different flow to it. Keeping the rear window stock as well.

I like how you kept the stock size on the back window. I am going to use a large window as well from a 51.
Doing door tops first and then the back window. Should be there by Thusday or Friday.

Good to see you are including your son, give him something to dream about and hopefully he will follow in your footsteps.
I have a friend that has one chopped three inches and stretched five. Has real nice lines and sits very low.

Could you get a few pics of it for reference? Do you know if cut down the bed or stretched the wheel base?

Yes my son loves cars and trucks and we hit 1-2 shows a week in the summer time as a family and as a reward for him doing his chores. He always gets shot gun in his truck.

I saw him today and he said he cut down the box. I'll be in his area next week on Wed, i'll ask about pics for you. His shop is small and kind of full, but i'll try.

I like the idea of quartering the roof. Seems like the best way to keep all of the pillars looking right. Then the donor top is used to reskin the top so you don't have to weld across the top at all.

I know quartering is usually considered the worst possible way to chop a car, but to me it looks like the best way to chop a truck like this.

Excellent work as always, Beee. It'll be one of those trucks that makes a guy do a double or triple take to try to figure out why it looks so damn good.

  14. It all depends on the car (or truck) With this vintage of F1 there is no need to quarter the roof, only lengthen it. I did a 5" chop and there was less than a 2" differance in width when the top was lowered.
So looking at the "A" pillars that's pulling the bottom of each "A" pillar out .5 of an inch and the top of each "A" out a .5 to get the pillars to line up.

Got the doortops back together today and squared up the back of the cab. Started getting the 51 rear window frame ready to be trimmed down to install in the back. Back at it tomorrow afternoon for a few hours. I am happy with it so far.

    Hey,

If when you deside the '' quarter route " is the best way to go with a chop design, you can avoid the near fatal flaw of having to weld, hammerweld/ fill through the dead flat area of the roof panel by staggering your cuts and leaving the center of the roof intact. This is much like cutting a hole for one of those bad aftermarket sunroofs that were so popular in the 70's.
Your cut lines are layed out fore, aft and to the side of center leaving the center panel intact. Your filler metal pieces are now in the areas of the header panel, backlight rail and the cant & drip rails, all easily reached and welded. Using this method, a doner roof is not necessary.

I actually have a donor roof.

I would essentially quarter the roof and reskin as far out as I could with the donor.

    b-bob's truck looks great though.

2 1/2 inches. Yeah, you can't please everyone. We all have different tastes and opinions. You have to do what pleases you.

    Your truck is looking great!

Thanks for the pics, I like the cab and bed but the front end does not look right to me. Did he pie cut the hood and drop the noise down some? It also almost looks like his front fenders are sectioned or something? But all in all this is the direction I will go with my son's truck one of these days.

On a second look I am guessing he channeled the body down but left the running boards and the bottom of all the fenders in the stock location and took a section out of the fenders to line it all back up. I am guessing about 2 1/2".
By doing this it shrinks up the gap between the door and running board. But then again I am probably 100% off.

I am not sure what he has done up front .I can see that the hood is pie-cut, haven't been told about anything else he did to it. I'll ask next time i see him.
