Do you have a '39 Deluxe or a '40 standard grille. If you have a 40 Standard, it doesn't have stainless strips. The '39 Deluxe has stainless that mounts to the tops of the grill bars. Bob Drake has the stainless bars as well as both the Standard and Deluxe grills for the '40.

I LOVE the '40 Standard grille! That's just a personal preference. But changing a '40 Deluxe to the Standard? WTF...

I have a set on my '39 DeLuxe and they fit ok. If the grille needs work, I would suggest you do that and test fit the stainless as you go. I had a couple of grille bars that were not perfect and getting the trim to fit was a job. I also found the supplied clips to be kinda' marginal. Hence, this warning. The small trim piece, in the upper corner of the grille, fell off somewhere on the road. Figured I could call Drake and buy a replacement. They said no, but I could buy a whole new set of stainless. wtf? That ain't happening. Now I'm missing a piece of trim until I can find an original to replace it or find someone breaking up a set. Needless to say, I'm done with Drake.

A std. only has one taillight "on the drivers side" where as a deluxe has two.

I like both but I really prefer the standard's gauge panel.

ANSWER: According to the manual shown; on page 260 it shows:
1940-41 01A Standard the front RH outer bumper arm is part # 01A-17754-A..1 req"d
LH outer front bumper arm is part # 01A-17755-A...1 req'd.
    Inner bumper arm 01A-17766-A....2 req'd.

    1940 01ADeLuxe RH outer arm part # 01A-17754-B.... 1 req'd
LH outer arm LH, part # 01a-17755-B...1 req'd
    Inner front arm, part # 01A-17766-B... 2 req'd
Because of this , Deluxe front bumper arms are often "rebent" to pull the bumper closer to the body if used on a standard model. Two different outer arms are required because of the license plate braket holes in the RH arm.
Another obscure piece of info is that the very early production louvered (vented) sheet metal side panels used on the 40 DeLuxe grille were first produced with a different number of louvres. I can't remember the actual number but it was less than the 19 you commonly find. However, the later majority of them were produced with (counting from the top) 10 louvres, (middle 9 louvres), (bottom 9 louvres). I came across this info when reading about Bob Drake's research when he decided to make these pieces. If you have more info, please post it. Look at the prices of these parts in 1940!

Heres my fave version....I had a 40 deluxe, a real nice car, but I could not stand the front on view...it looked nerdy(sort of pionty faced with glasses)...the best combo(in my opinion) is; `39 deluxe with 40 deluxe dash...`39 gives you the best tail lights ever, the best screen frame, one piece door glasses, the most perfect headlamps and the hood and grill are the most business-like.......I`d like to think that there is a `39 coupe in my future somewhere down the line.

    now is`nt that just perfect????

  15. Funny story while we're on the subject of '40 front bumper brackets. When I bought my '40 Std. Coupe 20 yrs ago, it had some chrome nerf bars on it that I believe were sold for Volkswagens back in the 60's. After scouting around for some brackets to mount a stock bumper, I found what I was told were '40 brackets ( I still think they are). It took a little tweaking to get the stock bumper to line up just right with the holes but they worked. It wasn't until afterwards that I noticed that the mounting holes for the license plate holder were vertical (one over the top of the other) not horizontal (one beside the other) like every other '39 or '40 bracket I had ever seen. These things only happen to me.

  16. That is the best of all worlds, reefer. It's nice to have the tilt out windshield as well as the cowl vent and I much prefer the classic '40 dash over the '39.:)

Reefer, What is a "screen frame"?

Also, I think the downward slope of the 39 and the 40 Standard hood enhances the "look" when the car is "raked". 40 DeLuxes look a bit more sedate and distingusihed while the Standards have a "catch me if you can" look.

I discovered this recently on my car -- a '40 Standard that had DeLuxe brackets on it when I bought it. Interestingly, Drake recognizes this difference and sells both, while Rock Valley (from whom I've bought very nice repop bumpers and brackets in the past) doesn't even know that there are two kinds.

I'm kind of partial to the standards. You can't go wrong with anything from ford in 1940.

But the leaks suck. I'd love to know if anyone ever figured out how to make the leaking stop. New gasket didn't do much:(

I dig the look of your car, especially your wheel and tire combo.

AKA Windshield Frame..... kinda like "guards" instead of fenders.

No more rain than mine sees, I think I could live with it. Not only does it look cool, but I bet the "in your face" airflow adds a cool feel of an already cool car.
Bet that small windshield leak messed up alot of floors through the years though.

  28. Thanks, am very happy with the look. Here are a couple of better pics that Axle took at Viva. The car wasn't finished in that first pic.

There were lots or "naysayers" when the Halibrand Smoothies-Redline Tires combo was announced. A couple of guys got downright hostile about it. All have subsequently admitted that it works well.

Thanks for the kind words, Johnnie.

Nice looking car. Aren't '39 Dlx and '40 Std hoods the same? Excluding the trim, of course.

Yes, '39 Deluxe & '40 Standard hoods interchange. Just the trim holes are different.
