I was educated this year on cast vs. billet cams, the COMP cams are cast unless the part number ends in -9.

I just read that...you posted it just recently on another thread.......Yes, a definate upgrade needed............I was expecting breakage...but not in this area, caught me by surprise !......Littleman

  3. Too Much RPM for a cast camshaft !! I've seen this before. Cam acts like a shock absorber for the harmonics in the engine and the valve train >>>>.

  4. Thanks for takin' all the documenting time for us here on the HAMB! Really educational, good detail. Hope the damage is minimal. Round of applause for a great guy!! Glad I got to see the truck makin' passes at Bowling Green, killer. Nice meetin' you, good luck man!!

I have the engine close to being pulled......pulled the intake-heads-valve train stuff along with the timing cover.....The cam is in [3] pieces and one lifter in [2] pieces........having trouble retrieving the shorter cam sections out..will wait until total tear down...........Littleman

3dnsouth, thanks......and thanks for stopping by @ Bowling Green !...Dave

  6. You got better numbers out of that truck than I thought you would with those carbs.

Just thankful the cam Broke and not your chassis parts which would've been more catastrophic!!

One thing for sure... you proved the strength of your split bones and other chassis and suspension mods as well as knowing that it works great enough to lift the front and muster up that 60 ft time.

My project demise was not as dramatic as yours but disheartening just the same.

Look forward to seeing this continue but I'd understand if it returns back to street duties only!!!

    Thanks Dave!

Defeat..............Littleman....their is still one more 3'' or so chuck of camshaft waiting to come out the block...but will need to wait until I drop the crank to get it....It chunked out one lifter and hurt the lifter bore torwards the bottom, but should be ok...

Look on the brightside......at least it's not bending valves or playing whack-a-mole with the pistons anymore!

I am trying to figure out if the cab is fiberglass, it appears that way, if so, where did you get it?

Bill, it has fiberglass on the inside...due to the thousands of pinholes all the panels had....it also needed it for structural integrity due to the sad shape of the steel the body panels were in.......Littleman

Way back in the 80's a friend on mine bought a dodge PU with a 383 super cheap. He managed to get the motor to run on a couple of cylinders but it was obviously broken. Turned out the crank was broke in the middle, likely due to the wadded up rod embedded into the block, and the cam was broken in multiple pieces. That it was running on the front two cylinders really amazed me.

I started to clean and bag all the parts this week....I was cleaning off the oil from the busted lifter and inspected the end that was chunked out...I saw spider cracks on the surface that rides on the cam lobe all around the outer edge dia...I inspected the rest and found two more that were spidered in the same way.......Either too much spring pressure or indirect damage from the valves smacking the five times prior w/ the other aluminum heads.......Each time that happened I removed the intake and rocker arms, pulled the pushrods and removed the heads....I left the lifters in each time....never gave it any thought to inspect them each time....So I may have been able to catch this maybe, or the last go around spring change did it all on its own in efforts to stop the floating............Littleman

Did you all feel it.......The Earth Stood Still for a moment..when I sat that Big Holley four barrel on the Truck.......Ha ha ha

I was going to spend this winter building a streetable engine for the Truck.......but found out I was not capable of building a 10 to 1 engine......just could not pull the trigger........I kept looking @ the killer forged rotating assemblies available thru Callies and kept wanting to buy the 14.5 to 1 kit.....and go racing again. I lost plenty of sleep over this. So I figured the only way I was going to have a streetable engine was to find one that was built already, because I was not going to build a Nancy engine myself...hell it cost the same to get the 10 to 1 parts as it did the monster compression setup....But buying somthing already assembled was hard to do as well, it's something I just do not do....But I found one on Craigslist, and it turned out that I knew a few people that knew the engine and car it was in along with the builder...I just tore into it the other day. It was refreshing to find that the guy who put it together had good attention to detail, that is getting hard to find these day's....

The engine is a 10 to 1, GM forged and balanced rotating assembly w/ studded bottom end complete w/ windage tray and crank wipe, Wiseco forged pistons, solid Comp cams stick .540-.558 lift dur. @ .050'' is 252-260, steel Dart heads shaved 200cc runners 2.02-1.6 valves w/ roller rockers and girdled up top, has the cheaper Dart version intake manifold with a 750 double pumper Holley carb w/ a Proform center body...It came with all the paper work..It was in a 4,200 lbs. car and went 11.90 in the 1320 and he drove it on the street.........my Truck is 2,500 lbs wet w/ me in it........so we will hit the track to see what this thing will do and still be streetable.......I figured I would try the Holley four barrel for the fun of it then put the 6x2 setup back in action...I am thinking it's going to scoot very well....I need to find a scoop or something better to stick up top, but the velocity stack may look ok once everything is together....I can already hear the giggling when I show up at the track w/ the four barrel and the look of disbelief...This engine might give me the best of both worlds, time will tell....Littleman

Thanks............looks real funny to me thou....doubt I will get use to it....but want to try it....Littleman

  23. definitely needs some other scoop, just think of all that time saved tuning just one carb, you should be able to make a couple more passes...lol

  24. :)Lovin this thread as it is always so insightful....I try to consume and digest the piston situation, as someday I hope to work on my own ride...

Hope you don't mind...I have your old enginge roar as my cell ringtone.....I was lucky to meet you and chat at "Jalopy Showdown" last year....Good luck with this project!!!

I just read all 32 pages at once. THIS thread is what hot rodding is about. not check out these OG EJ headlights or check out my new kinmont brakes.. or is my rat rod traditional or some other argument of triviality... THIS IS PERFECT....

DAVE.. I watched your spot in the Mad fabricators vid and want to read your thread. You sir are one bad mofo.. with attention to details most don't have.. but i grew up with a machinist as a father, and he is more anal retentive than most machinist. so i know where the obsession comes from. keep it up!!!

now i am going to say it looked WAY better with the 6x2 but still...

I picked up a Mr Gasket scoop that need some work done to it, so it was fairly cheap...I think it looks much better w/ it than others I have tried....I blasted around town last week in it....seems like it will work out for Street duty...But the new 3,800 stall converter seems a bit much..I really need to test and see were it is actually stalling @.....I will do that real soon when I take it to the Strip to see what this thing will do w/ the 10 to 1 compression-iron heads and that Holley four barrel along with my street header setup..and slicks of course, because that's how it is driven on the street.....should prove to be interesting......Littleman

have enjoyed your posts as i have emailed you..........
but please stand back &rethink the scoop choice..........
the 1st one says wanna race....the 2nd just is ugly on your car
put a plastic top on the holley to clean up the flow;you'll find that holleys donot like to have air rammed down the air bleeds at the same time....
you could MAKE some injector like stacks in each carb bore that fit insde the volecity stack that seperate the incomig air from the air bleed inlets.....thanks for listening......john
....the 'i wish i had a blower' scoop was designed for injectors......
.........the volocity stack picks up air pressure that builds up in front of the windshield....
