    Description

    Auto racing at Old Orchard Beach began in 1911. The start and finish line was the pier. Googins' Rocks was the southernmost turning point.

    The car in this image sports an E-M-F insignia, indicating a car manufactured by the Everitt-Metzger-Flanders Company.

    Competitive auto racing on Old Orchard Beach probably began as early as 1903 although the first recorded formal race was in 1911. The last was in 1913.

    The start and finish line was the pier. Googins' Rocks was the southernmost turning point.

    The car in this image has Massachusetts plates, dated 1912.

    On back is written in pencil "Chrysler towing "Old Glory" from in front of Capt. Jones' hangar at Old Orchard Beach to a point 2 1/4 miles distant, enabling "Old Glory" to have more of a run [here writing cut off] Chrysler Sales Corporation, Detroit, Michigan.

    Yup. A friends mom worked there and I can still smell the coffee in the aiir when she got home and rolled down her window to say hello to us kids playing in the streets.

    Kids playing in the streets... what a concept.

    The Town of Littleton was trying out a Bell Company snow plow on the West Road. It was the first snow plow ever on that road.

    Dot Campbell, born in 1922, describes plowed roads in Southern Aroostook County in the mid 1930s in the audio below.
