Are Coker Classics a problem?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Kellys Hot Rod Parts, May 4, 2010.

  1. I recently purchased a fresh roadster with coker cl***ic radials on it. The previous owner said the vibration in the front is from the cokers and this is a very common problem. I took the car to the local tire and alignment shop and they took me in the backroom and showed me 4 more bad ones on the self. 3 were badly worn after only 10,000 miles and one was new but so far out of round it was unusable. Anyone heard anything like this? I have an appointment for Monday morning and really do not want to start replacing new tires, let alone replace them with the same brand and model if they are a problem.................

I have had several sets of Coker tires,,the bias plys don't last like radials.

Mine don't have any vibration whatsoever. I have some concerns over the posts noting how the WWW turn brown, but so far mine are O.K. there also.

I'd be surprised to see many bias plys not pretty worn after 10,000 miles.

I didn't like mine. The minute I drove the car with them it ****ed. Tried all types of front end tricks and nothing. Bolted the same old type of tires I always use or purchase and no more problem. I know alot of you guys do good with them, I just don't care for them.

Couldn't keep mine in the road. Started browning. Belts popped in one of them. Driving the **** out of my Diamondbacks.

Found the best use for a Coker.....

  9. Not every single tire Coker makes is a bad one. However, I've read enough bad Press about them not to take a chance with close to $1,000 of my hard earned. I haven't heard anything but good about Diamond Back's. Before I let money like that go, I do my homework. It's your money, you make the call...

As with all tyre questions, the search function is your friend. Coker radials have been discussed a lot.

Diamondbacks are the end-all, be-all perfect solution either, had trouble with a set I bought a few years back and their 'customer service' was dismal - and that's being generous.

Anybody got a suggestion for tires for my 16" V8 wire wheels? Radials would be O.K., if there was a tradional-looking blackwall that resembled Coker Bias plies (7.00X16 rear, 5.00X16 front)
The part of the state I'm stuck in is full of tire shops that sell 'tennis-shoe tires' and donks.

So I've gotten two private messages from folks wondering why i am not "backing my boy Corky" on this thread. It motivated me to post.

Corky Coker is one hell of a dude. Put simply, I love the guy... and would pretty much go to war for him. He's a guy with principles... and someone I look up to.

That said, I'm not gonna stick up for Coker Radials... or any other radial tires built for our market. Why? Because I just don't understand old cars with radial tires. To me, driving an old car is an experience... and I want the whole experience. I love my bias ply tires and drive on mine every single day - no matter the weather or conditions. It's part of driving an old car.

That does not mean I think you guys are a bunch of knuckleheads for running these things... It's an opinion and I respect yours.

It's just that I'm not equipped for the tools to be in this argument as I don't have an appreciation for radials...

After 6 Coker WWW radials on Big Olds that included lots of weight on each wheel and a front end vibration that came thru my steering wheel, I purchased a set of WWW Diamondbacks radials (Michelin). Night and day difference. On the way home from the tire shop at 40MPH I took my hands off the steering wheel and went almost a mile without having to touch it again. NO vibration and virtually no weights on the exact same wheels. I sent those Cokers on down the road on Rusty Olds. I really like Corky as a person but won't run his tires on any of my cars again.

Ask Slick50 and DeVilleGal regarding their couple of BLOWOUTS on the highway while running Cokers. They could have been hurt, or their beautiful Caddy could have gotten damaged.

    Bottom line for me is
    same car,
    same wheels,
    two different sets of tires,
    two completely different driving experiences

    Bottom line..........

Pick any product and you will always get pros and cons.

As to Ryans comments.......no offense.........but i have "experienced" bias plys all my life, i am 68 and been Hot Rodding since i was 16. I went to the Cokers because California has horrible freeways and i drive the piss out of my coupe. I was tired of fighting the wheel and hitting the ruts and doing the "lane change"

    anyway my 02................

I got my cokers from the orig. owner. He had one blow out on it's first major outing from NC to NJ on a newly completed merc. It took out his rear quarter panel and a skirt. I got them cheap, still had the ******s on them. They browned in spots on him, I scrubbed the **** out of them, they still have a brown tint, but what the hell. My Sears guardsmans drove a hell of a lot better, I was about to put them back on. The swing was the best looking of the bunch, till the belt snapped. I was afraid to go over 65 with them. It felt like the *** end had come unbolted. When I shifted lanes, there was a delay, then the rear felt like it was coming around on me. With my Diamondbacks, I drive 80 all day long.

I have talked to 2 proffessional shops who have dealt with the same issue with them, after finally convincing the customers to swap them out, the problem was solved. $800 is a lot to spend on a set of tires, I'm making my money count.

As I have said before, I like Coker for their involvement in the hobby, their period tires are great for that exact resto, but for a driver........no way.
