What cars have u bought for under $1500.00?

I saw a nice 61 t-bird parked a block from my house for sale. And although I doubt it is going for less than $1500.00. I thought to myself. Hey, I just got paid today........hmmm, maybe I can pay the rent a little late. So what cars have u people bought less than $1500? Not from relatives or even friends. Give me something to shoot for, because non of my friends or relatives drive these cars. Is there any hope?

 

Serious? I've bought a bunch of cars for less than $1500. You mean in the last few years?

$350.00 for a '57 Chevy two door sedan...
$1400.00 for another '57 Chevy two door hardtop...
$1500.00 for my current build, a '55 Caddy...

I've owned 36 vehicles in my short life (I'm 32) so I guess I'll share.

1954 Chevy pickup (hot rod 250 6 bed rough)
1975 Caddy Sedan Deville (500 power and all the excess of a 75 Cad)
1979 Chevy Malibu (weird car--factory buckets w/ console and tach?)
1977 GMC dually w/ 454
1980 GMC Jimmy (Georgia truck w/ every possible option,but with vinyl seats.Somebody wasn't thinking the day that was ordered!)
1969 Chevelle (solid southern car,strong small block--my first and still got it!)
1986 Buick Regal T-Type (owner said motor was knocking,it was an exhaust gasket)
1973 Olds 98 w/455 (solid low mile car bought for the motor and trans for a Model A,was my daily driver because it was so much fun.Put about 40K miles on it in 2 years.Did you know a 455 in a 5000lb. car will blow the tires off @1800 RPM in 3rd gear?)

Lotsa other scores just for engines,parts other things us car guys do.These are just the fun ones or the ones I turned big money on.They're out there,just have to be in the right place at the right time!

there's a 50 Bel-Air on the S.F. Bay Area Craigslist right now for $1500.00. looks like a good builder. if I was still dumb like I used to be I'd prolly go buy it... or at least go have a look.

 

My 40 Ford for $200 in 1961. Was making $1.15 an hour at Grand Union Supermarket.

 

It used to be that very few cars were over $1500 used that were more than a couple years old.

Before my time but I'm betting others here can remember buying running Model A's for $100-$200. Nobody wanted them.

In 1980 I bought a granted rough but running 440 1970 Dodge Charger for $200. Nobody wanted a car that got 8 miles to the gallon then. I bought a decent 57 Chevy in 1979 for $750. A 1967 GTO convertible (in good shape) for $1100. I remember passing on a 427 equipped (not original) 69 Camaro for $800 because it had a bit too much bondo.

I can rattle off cars like that all day. You could buy old 4 doors for next to nothing. My buddy bought an excellent rust free 63 Chevy, 6 cyl, 3 speed on the column for $600. It was a 4 door. Nobody wanted it in 1980.

 

None for me but, my neighbor's dad still has the 1932 5 Window (or is it 3, been a while since he has been here in it) he got in 1962 from a junk yard for a whopping $25, running gear and all. It is an old lakes racer that moved to the track after 10 years. He has some pretty rare parts on that car including an eddie mayer manifold, ardun valves, and some other sick shit. All in all, best car he says he has ever owned.

 

My dad always told me to drive a different road on the way back home from any place I was and I might see something different than I saw on the way there.Turns out he was right.Get off the beaten path,those cars are already gone.Cars get sold sold on high traffic routes,especially old ones.Head out on back roads,keep your eyes peeled in garages,barns and under trees.You can't buy if you don't ask.

'73 Camaro Z28 Tube chasis car for - spent a ton getting ready for psca sold it when I moved out of the city.
'52 Chev pickup 3600 (Just picked her up..)
'29 Buick Sedan (had a badly done chopped when I picked her up so I got her on the cheap (imop), but is fixed now)
'94 Jeep Cherokee (what I Drive daily)

So many I lost count. I can only think of one I paid more than that for. And that one was only $2200 or so.

 

I'm in the "every one I have ever owned" group. My '48 Plymouth was given to me for free about twenty years ago, My model "A" coupe started as a body for 500.00 (he let me make payments), My Falcon cost 800.00 in 1980, My '29 roadster p/u cost 200.00 for the bare body in 2001, My '71 maverick ( 302/c4 car, 28500 mi., orig paint and everything) cost 1200.00 in '07. There have been many, many more before and since, but all have been less than 1500.00. Catch is, at that price, you usually won't drive them home, and you do have to be a bit crafty to get them up and running. It's all part of the game. I am one of those people that does get a kick out of picking up a great deal - but you do have to keep your eyes and ears open to find them.

Man,you ain't kidding.I can't believe what kind of money the "bastards" like 4 doors and Model As are going for right now. Hopefully it'll calm down to where real enthusiasts can afford cars again,not use them as a nest egg.It's just over exposure by the media,TV and mags alike,fueling crazy money.Last week at a local swap I saw messed up rats,bastards and "barn finds" going for excessive amounts.The one that stuck out was a rusty,but not super rough model A with diamond plate running boards and the usual "repairs" for $8000.Had "barn find" advertised all over the signs.Barn find my ass.Maybe beside the barn or somewhere else on the farm,but definately not IN the barn.

There is a 56 Chevy 4 door wagon "barn find" for sale locally. The guy wants $10,500 for it. On a scale of 1-10 it's like a 3-4.

In the day it was as noted, one of the type of cars that would bring $100-$200. In absolutly no day is it worth $10,500 though.

 

I bought the black 56 2dr hardtop for $500.00
I bought the blue 56 2dr post for $200.00
I bought the 63 Chevy II (Z-03 Real SS) for 1050.00
They are still out there, you just have to keep looking.

 

All of them.......... yup! Spent tons on parts but the start was always cheap....

Now that i think of it........alot of the fun was dreaming of the finished product or looking for parts....
