OK....I have to play with the full size engine. I have to stop looking at all the cool stuff...
I got the cam out of my buddys engine and it has the small headed lifters. How mush power will I gain by going with the larger head lifter with a B cam?
    thanks for any input

Well, all of the B stuff on an "A" is going to net you about 10 hp. Thats "B" carb, intake, cam, head, dist. So, I'm going to take a wild guess that it's going to be less than 5 hp.

The point of the "large head" lifter is to gain back what was lost with the small head lifters. If I remember correctly, the stock solid (non-adjustable) lifters are 1.187" dia and the small head lifters are 1" dia.

    .

  5. Picked up another B engine at an estate sale. Has a counter balanced crank! Dunno what'll happen with it but at least I have it :D

    Damn you!!! Congrats

  7. I ALWAYS unhook the battery in my A when leaving it. I also installed a fuse inline with the wiring. Remember A's are always "hot", lots have burned to the ground over the years.

  8. Like Elrod said a T spring is cheap and bolts right in. Lowered mine about 3" with a full pack...may be a little settled from years of abuse and service :D With a good pair of shocks a T spring under an A should ride pretty well. I also have a T spring under my roadster and it rides nice.

I used a Posies lowered spring in back with the two top springs removed, cut down and put on the bottom to keep the same spring pack height. I also made some clamps to bolt on the springs so I could use my spreader bar to mount the spring. I run 7.50 Firestones. I don't know how it would fit fenders, but on the pic I took from the side you see the distance to the moulding and I think fenders wouln't look bad!
In front I used a reversed eye spring and a 1935 ford axle.:)

Ya, im not sure if something grounded out or what? Im going to take out the stock wiring and run new wiring to a switch for the lights. Lesson learned. Oh ya, thanks for all the help with my pickup. its on the ground, but im having some brake issues i need to work out. Other than that, it looks great! Thanks again.

I have decided to hop up my stock 30' engine. I have decided on a Scalded dog single intake with a 94 or 97, and a Winfield or Snyder's 6:1 head. Any advice on either?

Don't sweat it Junk yard kid. You will get there. At least you are driving, and enjoying your rod. That's a BIG part of it.

  20. Mine came close yesterday...
After loosing a spot of scrap metal from outside the garage, I decided to spend the cash I would have made on a security camera. Wireless, motion sensitive - nightvision too. Thus the weird colours in these pictures.

Checked in today and... that's weird? Someone has moved the A? Except - no other pictures except these two? Nobody seen walking up to, or away from the car? Bare in mind I have quite a few pictures of pigeons in flight - the camera is sensitive enough....

    Any guesses?

    Nope?

So. checked when I came home. The A is not just pushed against the garage door - it's pushed them in. Hmm? And the car is in gear too? Ah. Reverse. Lifting the bonnet reveals the problem. The second aftermarket starter switch to fail. Perhaps damp? Certainly enough to suddenly connect itself, drive backwards until it hit the door, where it sat until the switch burnt out and the new battery ran down....

So. Check them cheap starter switches!!! Been dry for days here - the brass nut on the battery lead was discoloured from the heat, yet I wiggled the starter rod and water came out...

I followed the SOSS print with the exception of adding the model B undercut on the backside which isnt quite as deep as the model B, I thought this would help with the outer mass a little, I'd be glad to draw it up if you'd like.

Here's a couple pics. I'm really excited to get this one on the road.
The body and frame came from Chris on the HAMB and the rest from all over Oregon, California.
Repop Winfield head, the rest is old stuff.
I 'm gonna' have some tuning to do. Trying to run 2 97s on a mostly stock internally A block. #42 jets in there right now.

    Wish me luck fellas!!

the larger the head of the lifter the longer the valve is open I was hoping someone did a test. Do you loose 3hp or 5 ? I will junk the 1' lifters and pick up a new set for my B engine. The little bangers have so little power I don't wont to give any away

Christ Chris, what estate sales have model B engines???? I don't think there are any model B engines left in the state of Michigan, let alone finding one at an estate sale. Screw you and I am so jealous, good for you!
