Cheapest and best parts car I bought was a 69 impala coupe, drove and rode great, but I was after the motor. It had a 300 horse 350 with the double hump acc. hole heads and a turbo 400 and 12 bolt rear for 25.00. Yanked the engine and tranny out and stuck them in my 283 powerglide 64 nova.

Get the $1500 in cash. Start looking. No matter what the seller is "asking", even if it's 2,3,even 4 k. Talk is cheap, if you ask 'will you take $1500"?, the answer is always going to be 'hell no'. But cash talks. When you are CERTAIN you want it, lay out the cash. Just make sure you are going to love it, because you just bought a car................

out of ~25.... all but 4 of them....
    In descending cost

One brand new DD (the only car less than ten years old I've ever bought)
    One race car
    under 5K
One diesel truck, 'cause I was tired of trying to haul with gas trucks. It was still 1500 under typical prices.
One musclecar back in the 80s.

EDIT: 5. I just bought a truck to trade for labor. It was a diesel 5 speed for 2K.
    :D

In light of current trends, I think any advice to a newby(at building a project) that is contemplating startting a project; That project car should have a good title provided by the seller.

Minus the wheels and tires. FREE! Got a call to pull an "old car" off some property. Changed the fluids and driven it since.

My first old car I bought (in 05) was a 53 Plymouth four door with low miles for 600 bucks. It had a sweet running six cylinder. Put fluid in the master cylinder and put it on the road. The sad thing was I wound up selling it for 300 bucks, not bad for a running and driving old car with good glass. I wish I would have hung onto it. With the advent of Craigslist I would have gotten a lot more out of it. I unfortunately have no pictures of it.

A couple years later I got a free Studebaker Lark wagon. Foolishly I sold it for 25 bucks. I am pretty sure it went to the scrap yard :(

After that I didn't have an old car until one day I bought a 65 Rambler American for 300 bucks. The car ran and drove but the transmission was wonky and the engine burned a quart of oil every 50 miles. Changed it out with a 258 and auto out of a newer AMC I had laying around. Drove it down to Milwaukee and spun a wheel bearing. I sold it to a guy on the side of the road for 200 bucks as I had no real way of getting it home. Seen it on Craigslist a year later for 1000 bucks. Owner claimed it was all original

A few years later I was bit by the old car bug again. This time I wanted something a little older and seen an old Packard Clipper out in a field. Gave the guy 450 bucks and drove it home. The brakes worked too :) Gave it to my Dad for his birthday, he still is tinkering with it.

During the winter of 07/08 I bought a 63 Ford F-100 for 400 bucks. After swapping the carb it turned out to be quite reliable. It never failed to start even when it was 20 below. The truck looked nice but had a bit of bondo and needed some cab work underneath. I drove it for 6 months and made the mistake of selling it for the low price of 350 bucks. I got sick of listening to noisy valves that never seemed to stay adjusted for very long. It had a 292 Y-Block and 4 speed and while it never failed to get me where I wanted to go it did cement my dislike of Y-blocks.

I bought a 51 GMC truck for 450 bucks early in 2009. For a truck that had no brakes I drove it a lot. But then the roads around me have almost zero traffic and the truck would only go 45 miles an hour wound out tight. I drove it for a few months (only on the dirt back roads and in the county forest) had a lot of fun and then sold it for 650 bucks to a very happy kid.

I bought the above gem for 500 bucks, a 63 Rambler Classic. It had been sitting for nearly 3 years when I went to look at it some 2 1/2 hours away. I brought along some gas and drove it home. It started easy and was a reliable car all the way up until the motor blew up. The car was super solid, the most rust free car I have ever owned. It had a lot of miles on it when I got it (almost 200k) and sounded like a well tuned diesel engine. It also drank a quart every 80-130 miles. I sold it for 300 bucks after putting 7k worth of miles on it.

53 Willys Aero, bought it for 450 bucks. Runs really nice but the underbody is shot. I've driven it a few times but it really drives like crap. The front steering components need a lot of help. I've got it up for sale, I found another gem to buy. I can't help it, I got car ADD :D

I bought this puppy for 200 bucks. Brought it home on a running gear. It is a 1950 F-6. Most likely it'll also get sold too. Usually I like buying old cars, when it comes to actually fixing them up I am pretty lazy.

My brother and I bought two '48 Chevys at an auction a while back. One we paid $22.50 for and the other $25. I planned on fixing one up out of the two, but my wife convinced me (in a period of low funds) to sell them both.... sigh.... I haven't seen them in the shape that they were in for under $2000 lately and the one ran. We even drove it around the county roads for a couple days. Of course, it was a while ago.
