hes doing "trim on the cheap" for the time being until he can get all the stock goodies he is missing, and go from there. looks alot better than nothing.

If you have a profile shot outside I'll photoshop some different colors on the wheels. I'm still behind the gold or copper but there may be something behind the light blue- maybe metallic...

  3. This is one of Rik's photoshop renderings that I've been using to keep the project on track, but I sold the Desoto grille, and won't be using Sombrero's unless JJ :) wants to off a few of his repops. My stude caps will go on the car.

  5. Jeff, I'm doing original '51 rear window trim (will have it polished), and original front windshield trim. I'm using Matt's solution for side trim for now I might redo my windows in the future but that's a bit out there. I am not doing the side chrome, beltline or top of the fender chrome at this point. I do like the '49 Caddy belt trim treatment so maybe some day, but I for sure won't use stock Merc trim.

like these? I have some,(these are not mine in the picture), that I'm never going to use. they need some work.

  10. Your sled is progressing nicely. Resist the temptation to "overdo" it. Keep it clean and simple.

Just a small item but, I don't like the mirrors. Check out mirrors made by Jay M. Fisher. They are 49 repros and they are a work of art. A little pricey but hey, they work. Jay M. Fisher Cowl Mirrors 732-388-6442 (NJ)

I like traditional mercs but I have to admit I want to ride in comfort. (The little woman in my life has to be kept happy as well) Therefore my merc has A/C, P.S., P.B. and radials. Just my preference however, I'm not suggesting you incorporate any of this into your car.

Keep going, I like what you have done so far.

Ha ha!! no worries.. Yours are in better shape than mine are then.. John, the car is coming along nicely by the way.. Can't wait to see it done!

  13. I prefer the Sombrero repops that fit on GM wheels for sure. JJ look forward to doin' some bidness.

Rubyred, I have AC, PS, PB and radials on my car. I haven't had bias ply tires since 1993 except for slicks, and most of the cruise spots I'd hit up this year are easily 20-30 miles from my house.

Looks like I've front windshield trim sorted, thanks Flat-Top Bobarino!

  14. Glad to hear you are using original stainless trim around the windshield.:D With that being said and you have a 51 merc with a 51 rear window, you are already miles ahead of the game. Good choice on the windshield trim!!!! Lets leave the honda civic rubber seal for honda civics not kustoms. Car looks REAL GOOD John.

  15. I won't be taking pics with front windshield trim installed, only because it was just ordered and would need to cut down, and I think I'll be going to someone else to cut and modify the stainless.

JJ I want the 'caps for sure, pm me your cell if you want to touch base.

Can the '49 side trim be attached with adhesive?

  16. Update: Front windshield trim showed up today, thank you Flat Top Bob!

    Plan is now:
-Get rear window trim polished for next week install.
-Looking into having front trim cut down, assuming it needs to be tigged?
    -Then install glass.
-Swap on similar steel rims (not here yet) and Diamondback 215's (not here yet).
-Put 3,000 miles on the Merc.

Kinda hard to see but enlarge the photos and look at the trim on back quarter windows.
Doors will get same treatment once I'm finished cutting down the inside garnishes

Big bucks ! J C Whitney door edge guard $19.99 for like 25 feet.Enough to do 2 cars , 9 bucks a car, not bad.
Made up some clips to cover the splice.

No one ever noticed the difference.

But then again I'm a cheap prick.

  18. John,
Trimloc makes some great stuff you can use til you get the stiff you want. I have it on my Merc. Gonna have Matt do his awesome brass magic on mine when I get the buckage!!!! If you look at the pic's on my profile, you can see it up close. You will need to replace it with the stock stainless,if you want it to really look nice. It's a temporary set-up.
DON'T use that door stuff! It looks cheap....sorry Chaos, but I have to be honest!

  20. I have worked with Matt and he got me the trim we talked about last year Bob.

    I still have rain gutters.

  21. COOL!!!! Get some chrome on that thing,so I can see what it's gonna look like!!!!

  22. Forgot to ask,but....what are you planning for side mirrors? DON'T use "peeps"! They suck! Get some 55-56 Ford,Crown Vic mirrors. That's what I put on mine.

  23. as per above....

    no stupid peep mirrors.....please.

Great to see your progress, after all the heartache getting it this far

I just checked your old photo, you had peeps. But they were put on wierd, like half way down the door. They just look better hanging off of the top of the door IMHO.

  27. I have to say that right after I've spend $$$ to paint the car, it will be hard for anyone to convince me to drill holes in the body... I'll do something temporary I have not researched side mirrors, so maybe peeps again though they are pretty useless they are so small.

Here is an oddball question, what power window switches would (a) be findable and (b) look correct in my car. I have power windows in this ride.

  28. Here's what mine look like. I like them cause they look stock. Not like they came off something else. I used stainless screws and lock-nuts so they wouldn't get stolen or wobble.
