  1. Thank you, I didn't understand that statement either. Perhaps Bill can 'plain what he is saying/thinking.

Yeah, but even though they were based on the early Ford V8, once you bolt in those heads, the engine isn't a flathead anymore, it's an overhead.

I disagree, the valve location is the difference, not the shape of the combustion chamber.

"I had one just like that" Yeah, we've all heard it... But, this time, it was followed with "It was in 61 I bought a brand new healey. But I remember it having wheel coverings. How did you take them off?"

He was talking about the 1930 dodge roadster in my avatar....

  7. Can't anyone understand english?
Guy posts a picture of an experimental Chrysler OVERHEAD VALVE
engine and calls it a flathead. Wrong!

The shape of the combustion chamber is what determines if the head is a hemi.

The location of the valves is what determines if it is a flathead or overhead.

Guess if valves were located in head and block it might be a halfhead.

  11. That's what I'm talking about... The location of the valves does determine if it is a Flathead or O/H as well as the shape of the combustion chamber. I too would like to see a hemi flathead (or wedge as far a that goes).

"HA,HA, look, they're going to run that six cylinder roadster against that Blown gasser coupe, HA, HA"

Just before our 1949 Buick Straight Eight roadster beat the gasser in a heads-up drag race!!

Well, I understand and read English quite well. I can construct a sentence, I can conjugate, I know the difference between axel and axel, break and brake and have reasonably advanced spelling skills. That being said, let me address your comments. In a flathead engine, the valve placement has, as I previously stated, a great deal to do with the combustion chamber shape. Every flathead engine that I've ever seen, with the exception of a "T" head, which is a valve in block design and therefore, technically, a flathead, has a combustion chamber shaped like Mickey Mouse's head. A large round area above the piston and the two "ears" above the valves. There may be, and certainly are, some variations in the shape of the domed area in the head above the piston, but they are minor at best.

another time some guy looked at my engine and asked why i put a chevy small block in it. i told him it was a dodge 360. he said no, cant be. only chevys had an orange block. i guess the guy is right. its not like a guy could paint his mopar smallblock hemi orange or somethin.

  16. My very first thought when I saw the title of this thread:

Yeah, I get that with my truck.

When I put the first 383 in it, people would ask what I was running. I'd answer "383", and get a response like "yeah, stroker motor, huh."

I'd tell 'em no, it wsan't a stroker; came that way.

Now that I'm running another 383 that does have a stroker crank, I've taken to telling people that I'm running a "383 stroker motor". Had one guy ask me why the fuck I'd put a Chevy in my Dodge truck.

I had one of these turn out pretty funny. I was picking up a little bit of gravel in my truck; had the engine shut off while we were loading it.

A kid who worked there came up and said, "ya' know, it'd be pretty neat to make a hot rod out of that"

Now, this truck looks completely stock, except for fenderwell headers (you'd have to kinda' be lookin') and dual exhaust. No tach, bucket seats, stickers, wheels, anything. Has a solid roller with 299 degrees of duration, but you can't see that walkin' up.

Anyway, I looked at the kid and said "I agree", turned the key, and took off.

when me and my friends are talking of the 454, 350, and 409. we are interupted by a honda driver telling us that those motors aren't shit compared to his delasoul. go figure. mind you he is a boy. at least i think he is.

  27. Read on a Ford Y-Block site... Which one is better, Holley 94 vs Stromberg 97; "The 94 is a better carb because it is more modern". hahaha...

  28. haha I got that same thing today at a cruise, I brought my bagged '68 Cadillac DeVille and this guy comes up and starts talking to me about it saying how I did very nice work and everything which I appreciated and then he pulls out polaroid pictures from his wallet of his '80-something monte carlo and telling me all his plans for it and he'll get it nice one day...I listed respectfully and kept nodding but deep down I thought I could care less about an '80 something Monte it has nothing to do my a '68 Caddy
