New girl who's always loved classics

Discussion in 'New to the H.A.M.B.? Introduce yourself here!' started by dragonashes, May 9, 2010.

  1. Hey there y'all.
So while I'm completely new to this (thanks to craigslist) I have been in love with classic cars since I was 10 (I'm now 22). My father owned an old Ford pickup and a 65 Mustang, which were my absolute favorite cars until he had to get rid of them. I recently saw a picture of a 50 Studebaker pickup, all rusty and different colors and broken down, and just absolutely fell in love, and now want to own one, but I don't know really anything about them, and can't find really any good info on them, which is why I was directed here.

I'm looking to buy a 47ish-55 truck. GMC, Chevy, Stude, Ford. I'm hopin to buy something that runs, or doesn't need much work to make it run. Don't care about body work, I'd love to be able to do that myself.

So, what I am needing is just information, if you're willing to share what you know, I would SO greatly appreciate it. AND if you know anything about removing rust from a vehicle that would be awesome too-- cause if it's gonna need to be done, and I'm gonna need to know how much I might be lookin at to do that. I plan/hope to do most of this stuff on my own, so if you know how to do that, info would be wonderful!!

Thanks so much for your time and I can't wait to start learning!

Welcome, lots of Stude lovers on Hamb

  5. Thanks!

I don't have pictures of it, but I can put a link to the actual CL post-- I didn't want to put the pictures up, as that would have felt like I was saying they were 'mine' and they obviously aren't.

Welcome aboard! Looks like a pretty decent truck for the price. Do you have a knowledgeable buddy who could go look at the truck with you? Removing surface rust is not too bad a job but if it has a lot of rot that's a different story.

truck doesn't look to bad but if you are wanting a hot rod a 3/4 longbed is not as wanted as a shortbed.my advise is save up some money and find one closer to done or done, trust me you will save money in the long run.

Welcome from Virginia! If your husbands a mechanic he should be able to go over the truck without much problem. These old cars/trucks are pretty basic.

Now with that said, rust is not your friend! As was previously stated if its just surface rust it shouldn't be a big problem but its what you can't see that will get ya, its always worse. Why was it parked and left for 2 years you will want to know. Just remember "ran when parked" doesn't mean much.

Also if its been sitting for 2 years you will have to go thru the brakes, gas tank, etc. It looks like a decent truck if thats what you want but I would seriously listen to the advise these guys give. Buy the best one you can find to start with, hopefully running even if it means saving a little more $ an waiting a little longer. You will be much happier!!!!!Good luck!!

  19. Where in Virginia are you from? I actually moved to Colorado from the Shenandoah Valley.

Yea, I know rust can eventually kill a vehicle, lol. My only problem with being able to afford a better one is that, I don't have a job right now, so I was gonna sell my car for $2000 when I actually found one that seemed like it would be ok-not too much mechanical stuff to fix, because I'm very actively looking for a job right now.

Thanks, I will keep your advice in mind when looking :)

  20. That looks awesome. My only problem is that its in Michigan and I'd have no way to look at it or get it here to Colorado without spending a small fortune :(

I think I would find something closer to home, while winters in Colorado can be bad it is still a dry climate compared to Michigan....the land of ice and salt....salt being the key word here.:)

The truck doesn't look so bad, you might want to take some classes at the community college for the body work and learn to weld!

  25. Yes, too true. But the great thing is that I'll be moving back to Georgia before the winter starts back up here again, and I'll be working full time for my dad at his bar, and won't really have much time for a project, which is why i'm tryin to find one now :)

  26. I am finding those both out VERY quickly! lol
    Thanks!
