James....your skills never cease to amaze me,,,,
i really think the headlights would work on the car,,,
i may end up incorporating just the headlights into what i have going already, as i think the front of the car would be sloped a little too severely if i completely followed the rendering,,,i DO think the headlights work though, and i also like how the area below the headlights looks and the way it ties in with the wheel opening,,,i really like the bullet effect on the nose,,,i'll most likely leave the hood area as is and use the headlight idea frpm the BAT 9..

    you totally "get " me.
you are right,,it's all about the journey and considering ALL options,,,,
it's not that i didn't like what i had going already, just wanted to see if it could be improved upon,,,,,,
in the end, i think the front would have too severe of a slope,,,,BUT i DO love the headlights and the area below them and the way they flow right into the wheel opening,,,,,,

If you are talking about doing a close aproximation of the Bat front end i would say no. If you are just thinking taking a few styling cues and running with them, then it's probably worth exploring. I have always thought the styling of the old customs mimicked speed boats, with the tall bow, tapering back to the "waterline". Because of that I wouldn't loose a lot of the frontal m*** but the narrowed Edsel horsecollar would give it a visual center. Looking forward to see what you come up with. Love the build so far.

i turely dont know how your not just plain frustrated with this car . you have done hundreds of hours of work and then change your mind and cut off and start over...

after doing that like the 15-20 times its amazing you like this car anymore at all really. it will never be done because you keep changing your mind and im thinking your always going to find something you dont like.

you have amazing metal working skills please paint the ****ing thing and drive the wheels off. its already crazy as hell you dont have to keep going. its gonna end up looking like a vw beetle if you keep cutting and adding more curves.

if that came off as an ***hole comment i wasnt trying to, i REALLY like the car, but god damn put the cutting wheel down for awhile :)

i completely understand where you are coming from, and i understand what you are saying,,,i really do,,i'm not frustrated at all,,,actually, i'm having a blast....i think lots of people go through a similar process (alright, maybe not to the degree i do :D),,,i think part of the reason it seems to be such a long journey is that i've posted a lot of my ideas along the way on the board, and not just the end results,,,i enjoy sharing the whole process, and the feedback i've gotten has been invaluable,,when the car is right, i'll know it,,,,,,,trust me, NOBODY wants this car finished more than me, but i don't want to look back and say "i shoulda done this or i shoulda done that"..

That looks amazing. Better than a lot of the Ghia design studio cars. It even makes the higher firewall area flow into the lower rear quarters. The side inserts and the door jambs, perfect. James D is a master of his craft.

    Hey Jim,

The killer photoshop job James D. did on TELSTAR points up a serious problem with flow of the new design direction, that of cowl panel heigth!
From the "plan view" I'm guessin' from 4''-6'' would need to be sectioned out of the cowl to lower it and improve flow with the new fenders. This would probably require that you move the Schewbaux crossmember and engine mounts back further into the firewall to keep powertrain alignment and be able to close the hood. That's a problem with working from design drawings and photos- they don't always work in a 1.1 world. The Alfa/Bat9 lines flow so well because the Alfa isn't nearly as large or high a vehicle as a '49-'51 Ford.

On the shapes of the headlamp openings & fender panel ends, check out a few photos of a '57 Ferrari Testarossa Pontoon. The same shape as the Alfa fender on a little larger scale.

    Good luck,

Ok - round two. I´m pretty sure that Jim doesn´t want to section the cowl again, and the early Corvette manages to pull off the faired in headlight trick without looking too dumpy. With that in mind I reworked the side view so it would require a minimum of changes to the front fenders. Maybe it does look a little stubby compared to the first version, but the long overhang was bothering me and in any case, it´s always possible to go for something in between. In the end, it´s more early Corvette meets BAT9, but it fits the existing shape of the car much better than the pointy nose of the BAT car.

The first rendition looks more original. I'm sorry, your skills with the computer are amazing but this one looks too much like someone stuck Vette fenders and a Edsel? grille mouth on what was going to be a great custom. Might be easier, but it definitely doesn't flow.

To me, James first rendition really shows the front fender shape that compliments the door shape, the second corvette style front (and even possibly the current design) doesn't flow into the doors as nicely due the the fender being flatter overall.

I'd like to see the first rendering shown with a slightly sunken hood and windscreen to reduce the cowl height so it nearly matches the back. Key board modifications are so easy eh!

Total respect to you, wish I had the skill to have that much fun....

  23. 49 Olds or buick fast back rear fenders might be a good start for front fenders

stretched it out a tad with my LIMITED photoshop skills,,,,,
the headlights need a little tweaking, but i think the general idea could work out nicely...

Tell me what you want to see and I´ll do my best.
Fitting a pointy nose onto a stubby car was always going to be difficult.

    More changes Jim???

You'll still be done with yours before I'm done with mine! Haha!

  28. The headlights could work, but the Edsel grille appears forced.

cool James,,,i appreciate that ,,,i was reluctant to ask for anything else..youve done so much for me already,,,

could you make the line at the bottom of the headlight more horizontal and extend it to transition into the top of the wheel opening line?,,hopefully, that makes sense..:)

Like before? Sure I can do it, but the headlights might look a bit large when seen from the front. That was a problem I ran into on the front three quarter view and why I changed the shape in the first place. Anyway, I´ll try it again, no worries. We´ll figure it out (eventually)!:D

Any more thoughts about the grille?

This was the other version with the faired lights, but with the grille you have now.
