I only did 9 of these this week. the rest I pulled from the last few years. Just felt like I needed to collect them all in one spot today.

I really dig Pete Millar's work in the sixties. His work captured not only the race cars of that era but conveyed a real racer's perspective. That's because he was an artist and a racer. He was one of those brave souls who quit his full-time engineering job to pursue a risky art career drawing Cartoons for Petersen Publishing. Corporate politics being what they are led him to refinance his home to raise money to start his own publishing company and launching Drag Cartoons to the world. In his case "publisher" meant writing and drawing most of the pages each month with some help from friends, doing the pasteups and getting the page mechanicals to the printer and then getting the stacks of printed magazines to the distributors and then starting the process all over again creating more work for the next issue.

    [IMG] [IMG]

Somehow Pete found time to work on his race cars and be at the local drag strips on the weekends. He campaigned a wild looking altered coupe dragster called "Chicken Coupe" for awhile and ran a campaign in Drag Cartoons offering readers the chance to pay a nominal amount to have their names painted on his car. Sponsorships were rare in those days and mostly consisted of free parts leaving the owners to foot the costs of running, maintaining and racing their cars. Pete wanted his car to be sponsored by the readers and fans of his magazine.

In creating this BOMONSTER "Dragstart" scratched art piece I borrowed heavily from an August 1964 opening table of contents page designed and drawn by Pete. Not only did he draw an angle most never see photographed, but he designed a great layout to accommodate the typesetting. Great graphic design pulls the viewer into the visual while communicating a story and I just couldn't let this one pass by without covering it myself.

This is an acrylic and india ink painting on a 24" X 30" canvas that i finished for an upcoming Hot Rod art and car show at the Gasoline Gallery this Saturday the 15th of May in El Segundo ( down in the LAX area) California. It's my old Model A coupe i used to own years ago before it was painted a suede Gold color and sold to a fella in Kentucky, who in turn, sold the car to another person overseas and now resides in the Netherlands. It's called the "COUPE - DE- CAB".

Wow. With all the great photo work appearing in this show lately, we're gonna have to rename it the Friday Photography Show... Even Bob made an appearance this week. Buick59, where do you find those models? Also love the composition and viewpoints of your work april.

Quite a variety of art styles there 1-shot. I like all of them.

From me this week, a "slightly modified" '23 T-bucket done for a T-shirt design. It's old enough to be HAMB friendly, right?
