    *************************DISCLAIMER***********
ALTHOUGH MY MODE OF RACE VEHICLE MAY BE O/T ************
EL MIRAGE IS A MAJOR PART OF HOT RODDING HISTORY************
    ************************************************************
I've been going to El Mirage since I was a kid with my dad and been a fan for just as long. I have always had a dream of going 200mph in a roadster so I decided I'm going to run something at El Mirage this year (call it mid life crises).
Now my budget does not allow me to build a high dollar race car so I decided to build and run a bike (being a retired biker this was OK) with no money
using parts Ive had laying around and ALOT of help from my friends.
So this is how the story goes:
    my $200 yard sale find a 1978 Yamaha DT 100cc March 27, 2010
    [IMG]
let the build begin, my good friend / neibor Davy (PANHEADDAVE562 on the Jockey Journal) is a bike fabricating master and he got busy with the frame mods.
with the bike mocked up we did a test fit and found out I needed to loose my belly or make the bike bigger, so I did both
    [IMG]
after all the changes and fab work was complete I painted it a true Kandy red w/a silver metalic base and 70's-ish graffix, and the final constuction began.
my first test run was on the streets of whittier, the we ran it down a make shift 1/4 mile and she ran 55 just as it got into 4th gear. The record for the cl*** I am running is 98.6 mph so on my first outing my goal was to shake her down and run 70mph.
fast forward to May 14th to the El Mirage meet, My oldest son/crew cheif Austin getting it teched, I p***ed after having to change a fuel line and my gloves were not up to par so an SCTA official lent me a pair of his I wish I knew his name so I could give him props!
A new rule to SCTA is a mandatory rookie orientation, its a 2-part cl*** ran by Nate (BEEF STEW here on the HAMB) One of the things they stress over and over is NO rookie can run over 150mph until they p*** their rookie runs.
I woke up Sat morn to see this written on my bike by my smart *** son.
this is me getting ready for my first ever run down the legendary track, I was trippin
    [IMG]
Any ways I left the line for my first time and the bike was FLYING, at least 60 mph wide open in 4th gear with the timing light about 100ft away so I started fanning the clutch a little to get the R's up before I went through the lights........ then boom! I never made it through the lights, as they would say in NASCAR, I blowed er up. Nate (Beef Stew) p***ed me though so I get to run in June as a non rookie. THANKS NATE
My first experience with the SCTA was AWSOME, everyone is so cool and willing to help the new guys (and gals) The Gear Grinders, Tom Evans, Willie & Sheri Buchta, Nate, LANDRACING.COM, K&N FILTERS your all awesome and I couldn't of done it with out you guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    old bike $200.00
    regulation tires $90.00
regulation safety equipt $600.00 (mostly used and donated stuff)
    misc fees getting there $600.00
working with friends to build something to run down the legendary race co****......F-ING PRICELESS

Just keep your son's warning in mind and don't exceed 150 and you'll be fine.

Faded, Congrats on making it to the start line. The finish line is a bonus. Many threaten but very few carry out the threat. Glad to have met you even if it was a quick handshake in tech.

    That's awesome!!
Kind of ironic that I met you at El Mirage last June...
and my dad went with me to Bonneville last August. We talked about reviving his old 100cc Yamaha twin dirt track bike to run at Bonneville. You've certainly inspired me!
I think we'd even be running in the same cl***! :)

Great story -- thanks alot for posting,

Twin Jet? I'm not up on the old Yamaha lingo, but the bike started as a 1971 LS1 100cc street bike, if I remember correctly. Has 125cc road race jugs on it now, but we would convert it back to 100cc with the originals.

It's actually in my ba*****t and is pretty much mine now. Not for sale, of course. :)
