Hi guys. Read with interest and drooled over old photos of wild honey. I have been trying to locate pictures of this for a while because i want to try and recreate it on canvas.
    Was it painted metalflake orange?
What I would also like to see from someone's archives are pictures of Alan(allen?) Hare's 34 ford coupe that was on the show scene about 1970-74. It went through various incarnations and had lace paint at one stage. It came from Wellington and can remember seeing it at Wgton town hall along with an old moggie called Vodka and Orange.
    Thanks

    Awesome, thanks.
I'd murder someone for a set of those 4 spoke Raders on that hideous Moggy.

  3. I believe they are Berry and Chung wheels, made in New Zealand in the late 60's.

They look like Raders, they were made in 4 spokes, but I've never seen a set. Did Berry and Chung make other style wheels too?

  5. Here they are in a 5 spoke. I think they made the centers and put them in different width steel rims.

    Good stuff!

  7. Contact Paul & Liz at NZ Hot Rod Magazine, or ForEverFour, a fellow HAMBer for more info. NZHRM's archives are still in existence and Paul certainly goes back to the time Wild Honey was on the scene.

A mate of mine has the grill off Allan Hare's car. It still has the original paint and pinstriping, and the same dent in the bars. I'd love to know where the rest of the car is now.

  12. Yeah and I'm even older than him!

Paul seems to have a line on a lot of this kind of old iron from NZ's rodding past (and could tell you some interesting stories about Yours Truly - he and I go back around 35 years).

Allan Hares 34 was in Nelson in the mid 70's. From memory it was semi split up. A friend
still has the small block Ford out of it. Has a 5 bolt block, much conjecture over wether it was actually a 289 as claimed or a 260.

GREAT photo's and fantastic response. Tman, thanks for the links. I remember all those old covers, and another couple of rods that I had forgotton. One was the blue 34 on the cover of the Dec '72 issue, and another gold '34 later down the list.
Funny how memories are sometimes better than reality. At the time that moggie looked great, cutting edge almost,...but now!
Thanks to all who responded. I will contact the NZ hot rod mag to see if I can get any other photo's etc, but think I have enough to get started. Will post when finished.

  21. What's really wild is that it was built from a 1940 convertible, a car damn near priceless in today's market. Back in the early/mid 60s we did'nt care so much. :)

Sorry, but that thing is fucking ugly. Did George Barris have a cousin in New Zealand?

  23. KIRK!- No cousins down under, but lots of foul- mouthed American brothers.

p.s; Looks like that cool Moggie mugged (mogged?!) an E- type..

Kirk , You have been here , we are a small nation who have a proud HOT ROD history ,Wild Honey was way ahead of its time and for something like this to be built in NZ in the 60's ,clean up the show circut , then get shipped to Australia for some shows, was a credit to Roger, and one that Hot Rodders are very proud of here in New Zealand .
That car got many people into rodding, so really we owe that car a lot of credit.

    Steve

PS , I wasnt offended by you comment, but did think you may have thought a little before you replied.

I have been there and LOVE the country, the people and the hot rods. I'm glad it got people into hot rodding down there, but I'm especially glad you guys go above and beyond that car.
