Stolen car alert

<hr style="color: rgb(229, 229, 229); background-color: rgb(229, 229, 229);" size="1">   I posted this almost 2 years ago. This morning I got a phone tip from someone who saw one of my flyers that I had posted back then. He said the car had been sitting in some crackhead's backyard in L.A. and that the guy sold it to someone in Australia within the last few weeks. It sure would be nice to get it back before it leaves the country. Please keep your eyes and ears open.

Stolen 7/8/08 between 2:30 and 3:30 pm from Westminster Mall in <st1><st1:city w:st="on">Westminster</st1:city> <st1:state w:st="on">California</st1:state></st1>.
1957 Chevy Belair sport coupe.
<st1:state w:st="on"><st1>California</st1></st1:state> black plate number PLL 062.
VIN VC57L197166
Matador red with black interior.
Lowered in front with Super Bell disc brakes.
American Torque Thrust wheels with Kelly tires.
Has original power pack 283 with powerglide.
Rocker molding missing on left side.
New dual exhaust system installed the day it was stolen.
Original wheels and hubcaps in the trunk.
This car belongs to my wife's cousin. I took it to the muffler shop for him today and stopped at Sears on my way home. It was gone when I came out.
He got this car when he was a senior in high school 23 years ago.

I remember your original post on this. Hopefully you got more info on the sale and have contacted the shipping companies that specialize in shipping cars to OZ. I know that when i shipped my Comet over there, the company not only required seeing the pink but compared the VIN number as well.

I agree, also check with shippers that ship to Australia. KIWI Shipping is one out on the west coast.

Gotta get in touch with customs I'd say, once it reach's int. waters it's gone...I hope you have better luck than this guy... a few years back when videos were all the rage this young dude was making vids of himself doing high speed runs in expensive cars so he decides to go to Montreal and act like a big shot in his new pimped out Escalade and wakes up next morn to find it stolen so he calls OnStar, they call him back to tell him they located the signal from his vehicle and it was on the move (out over the north Atlantic)

The guy who called me is trying to get a location. There are suppose to be other cars for sale so he is trying to act interested in order to find out where it is.

I'm also wondering if it might do some good to talk to the Australian consulate in L.A. Though they may not be able to directly do much for you, they can probably direct you to the correct customs departments in Oz and possibly the U.S. I can say from experience that it is an involved process to ship things over there, and takes some time.

Question, It's been 2 years so I ***ume that you collected the insurance money, so what happens should you find it? Do you have to but it back from the insurance company? That would be tough because in two years that money might've got spent elsewhere..........

a car like that had to be. cl***ic insurance is cheap, you could insure that car for $20,000 or $25,000 for about $400 a year.

In order for the car to leave the US it has to be cleared by US customs. All the paper work must be in order, the vin number will give the car away. US Customs will check to see if the VIN comes up on any lists. If your car is on a list, it will not be loaded. I have bought a couple of cars fromt he US and had a great deal of h***le in getting the seller to sign all the papers in front of a notary. The "new" Australian owner must get a clear ***le before the car can leave the US anyway.
Looks like you are in luck and will get your car back. Pity the poor buyer who has bought this car with good intentions. Hopefully they will get their money>

WELL,,if it WAS insured ,,for $20-$25K or whatever ,,you don't want it back ,,it belongs to the insurance company ,,,if you find it ,,get it back ,,you're guilty of recieving stolin property ,,you'd have to pay the insurance company for what they paid ,,PLUS ,they're handling n carring charges AND interst on the money to stay outa JAIL ,,..........
if it was insured ,,,LET IT GO ,,,that car ain't werth today what it was 2 years ago ,,go buy another ,,nice ,,'57 Bel Air ,,
and be HAPPY ,,,

The insurance money was not collected. We opted to continue paying the insurance premium for a while and see if the car is recovered. The car was only insured for $15,000 because it had been stored for 5 years and the owner (my wife's cousin) had forgotten to raise the value. The insurance company (J.C. Taylor) wanted him to take the payoff 2 days after it was stolen because they knew if it was recovered they could sell it at auction for more than they paid out. They made it a point to tell him that if he took the payoff he would have to bid on it like every one else. He doesn't want the money, he wants the car back. I helped him buy this car when he was a senior in high school 25 years ago.

Have you called the places listed above as they are the main shipping guys but there are many others. I'd print out pics, get down to Long Beach and start looking.

The car cannot be shipped to Australia in one piece without an Import Approval from the Australian Government (which are presently very difficult to obtain!) and to get that requires a current legal ***le that matches the cars numbers. Of more concern would be if it was stripped for parts and parted out.

With the laws regarding exporting cars ex USA.the DMV of CA. and F.B.I do checks on vehicles prior to shipping .Recently a Chev arrived at Melbourne port which had slipped through the net in LONG BEACH. in the meantime the DNV. had turned up info that this car had been stolen many years ago and did not get of the wharf and was shipped back to LONG BEACH..Good luck
