Thanks to another poster I have a picture of our Sedan Delivery to display....this was at Indy in 1966. I have not seen a picture of the car for at least 30 years and am surprised at how it looks. I thought the rear add on windows were much smaller and I don't recall the super long collectors.......lettering was gold leaf on the doors and I watched the artist do it.
Tiny E, I think this may be close. 1962 Dodge offered the 361/305HP 4-barrel. Mid-year a 361/310HP dual-quad was available, I guess part of the Fleet Order Sales (Taxi's and Police Vehicles). Same 9.0-1 compression, high-lift cam and dual exhausts. The 383/325HP was available, but as a special order. I don't think it was part of their order catalog. The dual-quad set-up for the 383/343HP was also part of the mid-year special order. 10.0-1 compression, solid-lifter camshaft, same combo for both the 325HP and 343HP version. For some odd reason it was not included in the Plymouth mid-year addition to the special order catalog, but those in the 'know' could get one. Plymouth did make several 'special order' 383/343HP cars. So I would imagine, even though it was not on printed literature, they were produced, and I guess deemed legal for Plymouth. PC
Hey Running Bear---I remember that car. Sonny Freeman (not Freedman) got the car from Worrel and Peck Fischer ended up with it. I used to see it at the Exxon station ( in the pictures you posted) down the street from where I grew up in Parkville, Md. Sonny and Peck worked at Anderson Olds and Sonny drove Anderson's race cars in addition to his own. I also remember a certain white '65 Cutlass that Peck had. I am glad to hear about "Running Bear" ( I now own Anderson's '69 W31 F/S that Sonny drove) and hope someone has some more photos from when Worrel had it. That car was a N.H.R.A. national Record Holder so I am sure there is something out there. If that car is still around, it should be in the York U.S. 30 Reunion. Until next time.....Dave.
Colesy, Could you scan and post every page from every SS&DI magazine in your collection? I had to ask.
i was looking at this artical and i don't think this was that car,, it did say that he did have other oldsmobile's,,, it had a three piece rear window and the tail lights were different,,, it was a 303 cuin bored to 312 cuin,, she weighted 3.555 with 5 gallons of gas, small tool box,and a jack in the trunk with sonny driving,,,, it also had 5;13 gears and a set of home made traction bars,,, it was a fun car,,,, i remember sonny spending 2 grand at duffy's on the motor that was in your 69 olds and only picking up 2 tenth's on it,, he was pissed,,,
I guess he was pissed! A few weeks ago I was at Tim Bishop's looking through some old National Dragsters and we were amazed at some of the "for sale" ads. There was a complete Hemi car for $3900. and some Jr Stockers for under $2000.
Tiny E, Joe Kenney had a 1962 Model 440 Dodge 2-door first. It was a 383/343HP engine. A perfect fit for B/SA in 65', C/SA in 66' and back to B/SA for 67'. The story. I think that he got that car out of Minnesota back in 65' from Rick Johnson, a stock class racer. The car had been sitting in a barn for awhile before Joe got it. I guess the typical 'barn find' story. Ran 13.90's back in 65', check the old 1320 Drag News. The Dodge Model 440, Dodge Polara 500 and Plymouth Sports Fury 2-door 383/343HP cars were a perfect fit for the (9.50-10.59 wt/hp) class. The 'Trick Tank' wagon didn't come along until later, in 1968. Paul
Hey Running Bear---That two gand at Duffy's probably came out of Mortimer's pocket--not Sonny's!!! I knew Duffy's did the motor and that motor was STILL in the car when Anderson sold it. The first owner blew it up and received a W31 counter motor under warranty! I have the W31 warranty motor. Where is the '52?
Found this pic on eBay... ...and this one too. "I have thousands of both black and whites and color - mostly Maple Grove,Pa and Numidia,Pa - some Pocono Drag Lodge and some Cecil County -- Being 68 years of age and still being able to create these works for you and hoping you find your car or your favorite car in what I present makes this project my full-time goal. " http://cgi.ebay.com/BUCKSHOT-CORVET...tem&pt=US_Racing_Fan_Shop&hash=item588742c4c2 Any eBay members here? Someone should contact that guy and tell him about this Junior Stock thread! Pete
The car sat over the winter at one of our racing friends places....Frank Iaconio's. We were in the process of installing thin rings as it was a new trick.......Somehow anti freeze was never put in the engine block by us or Frank or his partner at that time......Burl Froelich..... When we began racing it again in 1967 I would guess it was......I drove it to the fastest run we ever made.....the new rings really picked it up.....I soon found the oil was not looking good.....full of milk.....block had cracked in the valley..... My partner and I were both married by then and kids were soon in the picture......We sold the car and it ended up in the hands of Joe Scott from Pa......Joe was a very well known and winning racer and was SS World Champ one year with his SS/KA 69 Camaro Convertible. He came to see me once at a race to tell me he had owned our sedan delivery for a while. I thought we were done with racing.....but my partner got me involved with another car a couple years later. We raced that one a couple years, won a few races and set the National Record.......Sold that one for the same reason we sold the first one....No time, no money, and wife and kids to take care of had to come first......
I like the partially tinted rear glass windows! Cool effect! Plus the flat spoke Fenton wheels! That tint job is just one of many individualistic, creative and original things applied to cars (not to forget the very cool lettering, names, pinstriping, color and custom paint schemes) from that once in a lifetime, bygone era. Thanks for sharing these pictures. Pete P.S. I presume the GRRRR plates are from a Pontiac GTO?
Larry Lombardo was a very good driver and thats why Jenkins must have picked him to drive his cars. I drove by the Stoudts Corvette lot every trip we made to Maple Grove... Larry Lombardo still builds racing engines.....I see at least one car when I am racing that has his name on the valve covers.... I am heading to Maple Grove tomorrow after work to race the NHRA Lucas Oil Series race..... You'd think I'd be sick of drag racing by now.....but I am not!!!LOL
Rich, you should know by now (for the overwhelming majority of folks) drag racing and/or high performance cars is a lifetime addiction whether it's directly (participating) or indirectly (spectating) or just plain ol' bench racing and reminiscing about the "good ol' daze." Have fun and good luck! Pete
Carl's a great guy and has been made aware of this thread. Whether he comes here much, I don't know. He has kindly contributed a number of rare photos to my forthcoming Jenkins book and I can say with out hesitation, his photos are top notch. You can find Carl at most east coast events (Vargo, York etc) peddling his photos.
Hi Pete. Release is due Jan 2011 through CarTech. Its worth noting that numerous members of the HAMB have been a great help. Im still looking for additional photos, specifically from the mid '60's if anyone can help out. Doug
Tiny E, Check through this site, and you will see most of the Dave Kempton info. Ran C/SA in 64' and 65' with the Sports Fury, but with the 361/305HP engine. The car ran 13.80's In 1966, the classes were upped one, and in 1966 he ran in C/SA, but with the 383/343HP dual-quad engine. The car ran 13.00's. In 1967, the same car would qualify for SS/EA, as Super/Stock had (5) classes. He won the 67' Winternationals SS/EA class with the car. I believe in 1968, you could not run 5-year old cars in Super/Stock, so he went back into C/SA, and won class at the Winternationals over a new 68' Cobra-Jet Mustang. I'm not sure if changed to a Belvedere car in 1968, they were a little lighter (not all the trim-added items), and they fell into the C/S weight bracket of 9.00-9.49 wt/hp. Both cars were lettered 'Shaker', and in 69' he went into G/SA with a 62' wagon 383/343H, lettered 'Shaker Maker'. PC
I'm looking forward to it! Although I'm a lifelong Mopar fan, I've always admired the Grump and his cars, some of which, as most of us know before he switched back to Chevrolet for good, were some very competitive Mopars! Pete
Hey Everyone, This might be a bit o/t, if it is, please forgive me. But, has anyone seen/know about/or thought about a 55 Chevy for the IHRA crate motor class? I think this would be about as close to a junior stocker as we could get in todays world. I think it would be lots of fun to build and drive, especially with a stick. I just wanted your thoughts and advise on the subject. Thanks everyone The Rock
Mopar man huh Pete, I'll try not to hold it against you, lol. Its interesting to think how things may have turned out had Bill received a Chrysler deal of his own.
There is already one running in IHRA. I think it runs G/CM. It started out as a 4 speed but I believe he has since switched to an automatic. It runs real good and does nice wheel stands. It is aimost a show car. 1st class act. The "Pure Stock" classes are closer to Jr. stockers of the 1971 era and back with the cam and valve spring rules.
Doug, if Jenkins would've remained with Dodge it would've been some mighty 'dark' times for Chevy fans during the latter half of the 1960s supercar era and beyond. Pete
Tiny E, 1969,,,G/SA,,National Record,, I think 12.65. I don't know how he did it, but Joe ran the 62' Dodge Wagon right between 12.65 and 12.70, with easing up at the end. Like clockwork. In 71' he went to a 69' rag-top white Camaro, J/SA or K/SA. PC
