I posted about this on another web site, but I can share the same information here. There are moments when veterans and others pause to remember those who didn't come back. Those are some very somber moments. In moments like those I've taken to listening to a recording of a song that was written long, long ago about a fallen comrade at arms. The song itself happens to have been written in German, but there are translations of the lyrics in many different languages. It's called Ich Hatt' Einen Kameraden and there is an article about it on Wikipedia (which I linked above), but you can easily find a lot more info about it by Googling up that song title. From the link above: Here is one English language translation. And lastly, HERE is a link to an mp3 file of the recording I have.
This is going to be the hardest Memorial Day I've ever had, I lost my brother last January, he will be missed.
They call me a veteran. I served in the USAF for 4 years. Yes, I signed the contract to give the ultimate sacrifice. But... I am not of the same caliber as those that have served and knowingly put themselves in harms way. I have not seen or lived the horror of war that those men and women have. I have not lost friends and loved ones to war. I don't hold myself in the same regard as them. It is those brave folks that I honor this Memorial Day and every day! THANK YOU!!! MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND HOLD YOU, BRAVE SOLDIERS!!!
Thanks to all who served - Thanks for keeping us safe! God bless May those who never made it back, rest in peace.
We are all thankful for the men and women who serve for our nations and our freedoms! Here in the UK we are currently in awe of the men and women who took part in the great Evacuation of troops from the Dunkirk region of France in the Second World War. Soldiers from many parts of the world were rescued by a flotilla of small ships when the German army outflanked the forces and trapped them against the beaches. The operation to evacuate them was known as operation Dynamo. My better half has just completed a 350 mile cycle ride across the North of France over five days, and visited many of the Battle sites and Cemetarys in what has been a very moving and thought provoking journey A picture of the Canadian memorial on the Vimy Ridge taken yesterday She has raised a considerable amount of money by cycling on this journey along with 275 other charitable souls. This money goes to help the rehabilitation of our wounded soldiers here in the UK. The organisation is known as Help for Heroes and over the past two and a half years has raised in excess of £50 million pounds! Here is a link to there website and the blog which has been created during the Big Battlefields Bike Ride over the last five days. It makes for sober but interesting reading and is accompanied by some incredible pictures and videos. http://www.helpforheroes.org.uk/bbbr_2010.html And my Girls donation page! http://www.justgiving.com/lindadean I think we all value the sacrifices that our military make!
Amen. Amen! God bless our troops and their families. God bless the fallen, God bless the injured. Thank you for your service, one and all.
Keith you may not have put yourself in harms way but the truth be told on that day you raised your hand and swore to uphold and defend the Constitution from all enemies foreign or domestic you did something greater than most of you countrymen. You wrote a blank check to your country. For that you earned the respect of your brothers in arms. Never slight your service to yourself or allow it to be, you stood up man. No one can ever disgrace that honor. Zapato, Nam class of '72
You might want to turn the volume up a tad on this one and grab a Kleenex... May they all rest in peace. http://home.comcast.net/~singingman7/TNOTW.htm
Posted by one of my Road Devil Brothers....ex-military guy For all that have put on a uniform, my respect For all those that wear a uniform, my respect For all those that support those in uniform, my respect For those that gave some and all...my deepest respect Just thinking about what memorial day really means
We will never forget those that paid the ultimate price so America can remain the Worlds GREATEST NATION!! Thanx for remembering those and the all of us Vets, World Wide, would do it again in a heart beat, only sooner!! Dave
Tugmeister is right about Memorial Day being from those who paid the ultimate price for my freedom, while Veteran's day is for those who fought (or stood ready to fight) for my freedom, as well as those fighting and standing ready today. However- I don't skip any chances to thank those who came home, and those who serve currently. If I see somneone in uniform, or someone with a cap identifying them as someone who served, I thank them on the spot. My nine-year old daughter does this, too. I never told her she should, she just saw me doing it, asked why, and when I explained it to her, she decided to do it on her own. So, to all who have served. To all who currently serve. To the parents who have their kids serving. And to those who paid the ultimate price- Thank you. Those words do not adequately express the gratitude and respect I feel.
I want to say thanks to all my brothers who gave the untimate sacrifice. And to Ssgt Perkens, a good friend who on April 18 gave his life for this great country. may he rest in peace.
Just another "Thanks" to all who serve and have served ! You're the reason we all get to do what we love and live in this great nation and we honor you on this day !!! Be safe !!
