He must live in the southeast near Sioux Falls like I do. Its pretty out here to this time of year too, rolling hills, farms and river valleys, but nothing like the Black Hills. And yes it is damn cold here, but the last few years in the hills haven't been much better and are sometimes worse with a lot of snow lately. I still own some land out there in Whitewood near Sturgis but have decided to go south to Arizona to get warmer and closer to California for hot rod stuff. I'll still visit South Dakota and the Black Hills though.

Randy, I'm going to make it to the All Deuces Run one of these years and I know you'd love the Black Hills if you can make it out here. Theres nothing like a roadster for being able to see everything around you, especially since you are looking straight up most of the time! I won't be able to meet you and Don for dinner at the LARS this year since we have to be moved out of our house by July 1st. Have some fun there for me!

Note the sign that is posted (they are all over) "Buffalo Are Dangerous - Do Not Approach" Earlier we saw a big tour bus that had a huge group of tourists out of the bus and within 20 foot of a herd of buffalo. That's not very smart to do during calving season and occasionally someone gets stomped and killed because of it.

We are on the Iron Mountain Road, probably one of the most beautiful drives in the Black Hills which takes us to the base of Mount Rushmore. In fact when you look through this tunnel you can see the monument in the distance.

Todd was giving the little flattie a work out road racing the corners and floor boardin' it up the steep hills. It ran like a champ! I guess that's why we call it a "Reliability Run"

I live in SE SD near Lewis and Clark lake/Gavins point. I'll have you know there is almost 5 miles of almost senic highway near the lake.

Other than that, nothing to see here, move along, nothing to see here.

Jerry, thanks for posting the pics. I want to do that sometime, maybe next year. I leave June 6th for the "******* tour 2010" for the LARS in the blue roadster. We will be driving thru the Black Hills on Sunday and Monday. Your pictures were a nice preview of my upcoming trip. Dale

Cruising back into the big city (actually the tourist trap) of Keystone, SD which is just down the hill from Mt. Rushmore. The K-Bar-S is just a little ways down the road from here.

Although we cut short our cruise over to the Crazy Horse Monument for dinner because the weather started looking pretty bad again we still did 253 miles of cruising on Saturday. We called it a day and ordered pizza instead and partied in the covered area in between the buidings where we stayed. The K-Bar-S is the best!

Since it was dark and rainy we did our annual group photo in the lobby of the main lodge.

Sunday morning dawned bright and sunny and everyone said their "goodbyes" before heading home.

Since the weather was so nice Jan and I put in another day of cruising the hills since we might not get out here as much in the future.

We cruised back up "The Bue Star Memorial Highway" (US-385) dedicated to our veterans. That sign hits home since its almost Memorial Day. This is a fitting tribute for those few who have sacrificed so much for our freedom.

We stopped to see Lake Pactola and its great to see it is almost full again after being almost empty the last few years due to the drought out there. Record snows the last two years did the trick!

We cruised back up through Deadwood and Lead to see a friends new house he is building. I love this old sign, it's been here as long as I can remember and I thought it would make a nice picture.

As the day came to an end we put the hammer down and knocked out the the last 400 miles to get home!

  14. Jerry, that picture of Pactola hit me. What few stories from grandad I heard (he was a quiet Norwegian man) was abotu working on a CCC crew felling trees for the resevior. They moved an entire town out of that Valley to build it, there are still streets divers can follow and some gravestones and foundations. At least a couple of the buildings ended up in 1880 town out on I90.

Here are some more pics from Randy and Pam Gribble of their trip across the state on two lane highways (US-14 and SD-34 I think) with a stop at the famous Wall Drug plus more pics of Friday's cruise and the rest of the weekend.

I think this pic was taken just before that buffalo took a kick at the door of Don's roadster when he went by him. He's a big one and would have done some serious damage if he would have connected!

Very nice! I am a roadster fan and the Black Hills are a fantastic place to see and drive. I envy you guys.

  20. Come out any time, there are lots of us locals that will show you the sights and feed you!:)

The Lake Area guys are a good bunch, but we know folks have limited schedules for travel.

The Black Hills is a great destination that makes the long drive out through the heartland of America well worth the trip. I'm sure I'll make the 1500 mile drive back here from Arizona to do it again next year. If you have the time, take the little two lane roads through the small towns of the midwest and west to get a glimpse of the past. Lots has changed but you can still get the feel of things that once were. I love driving in the great wide open spaces of the west and its the best meditation you can have with just the sound of your motor and the wind in your ears and the wide open road in front of you. And driving an old hot rod intoduces you to people you would never meet. If you have trouble there will be people stepping up to help you in any way they can. It's times like this that make you realize how great this country and its people are. Have a great Memorial Day and enjoy what so many have made the ultimate sacrifice for.

Nick, you'll have to join us when you get your roadster on the road! It would make a great road trip and I know you'll have a blast!
