Vintage shots from days gone by!

I still walk by the building at least once a week...

 

Out of all these pictures,The ones of the 70s show some awfull taste in clothes and hair styles,What where we thinking?

 

This guy's old Kodak family vacation photos were on eBay a while back. He had a Hugger Orange '69 RS Z/28. No shit.

Appropriate for today: A circa-1930 arial shot, courtesy the Curtis-Wright Flying Service (who had an aircraft plant about where the current GM Fairfax plant is), of the Liberty Memorial in Kansas City, this nation's only World War I memorial.



There are a lot more in the collection for those who want to see downtown KC back around 1930.

 

I toured the Flanders area of Belgium near Ypres (Leper) two weeks ago and there is a memorial or cemetery every few hundred yards.

 

Seeing TRG's image of the Kansas City City Market area (post 4900), I had to post this one taken a year earlier than his. The City Market is now know as the River Market and the street (where the way-cool '57 four-door hardtop is) now blocked off and a pedestrian walkway. From 1960, a Robert G. Askren photo:

This is a cool sequence (all from the Robert Askren collection) for a flight-crazy someone like me. Downtown (Kansas City) Airport, 1920s; looking south towards KC proper, you can still see some of the bluffs before they ripped them all up and built crap on them:

The runway was short, short, short, and pilots hated to take off to the south because of all the buildings up on the bluffs overlooking the river, so they built an ultra modern and ultra far away (WAY up north!) airport where TWA (who used to be based in KC) had an overhaul base. By '75 it was deserted except for private and corporate aircraft and a few charter operations are still there. Looking north from just above the West Bottoms area:

 

I'd swear that's Joey Heatherton...but don't know if she was in any flicks with a Cobra

 

I never got to go to a game at the old Municipal Stadium (we couldn't afford tickets)...

City Ice had plants all over KC and a whole flock of delivery trucks.

 

These are dated from around 1930.

 

They just keep getting bigger! Diamond T in front of KC's General Hospital.

 

I guess most, if not all, of these were scrapped in WWII and wound up in B17s...

 

I got yer "green" right here...Walker electric trucks, looks like 1920s.
