Great shots! I know there was 14 cars lost that day...I don't think I've ever seen a COMPLETE list of the cars lost. Most lists I've seen only highlight the best known/celebrity owned cars. Nice to get an idea of what else there was.
Thanks for sharing this photo Cleatus, I have never seen it before either! Does anyone know who the other cars in this picture belonged to? I wonder what happened to that '41? It doesn't look that damaged (the tires are even still there Would have been cool to know if it was ever completed!
The Ray Soff Shoebox conv. really does it for me! Six inch chop (!), and working top, to boot! (Pardon the pun. ) I think the car was at its best before the molded pans. Anyone have shots of it when it still had bumpers?
Customs Ill. Mag. Sept,63 For Sale; $10K (2001) Will only increase in value! Original "Show n Go" type car. In Mass. If interested, Ill get Ph # for you.
That maroon 51 Vic in the pics right above is CHOPMERCs car with the quads here on the hamb. The photo is from when Rebel John had it.
Cool, that's a pic I've never seen of it...The only recognizable thing on it there is the radiused wheel opening, LOL...Hey Rik, do you have anymore pics of it in that configuration??
I know that this was an old late 50s Custom that was on a cover on one of the little page magazines. But I remember being blown away looking at the build article in the old Classis and Custom magazines. Was this the same one? I remember being at the KKOA show in Wichita and buying all of the back issues that they had. I fell in love with those tailights. Ahhh good times... Thanks for posting the pics Rikster. Happy Trails, Mick
I see a lot of '55 Desoto grilles in those cars... there is only one thing better and that's a '54 Desoto grille. But they are both killer !
I believe thats the same one youre thinking of. Used to be royal blue. Its owned by Ray Soff here in NJ and is still in great shape and driven all the time.
I thought that it was... I'll have to go back and look at the article. It is kool to hear that he drives it around, I'd wet my pants if I saw it cruizing down the street...LOL!! Happy Trails, Mick
Come hang out in NJ for a wknd can I'd bet you might see just that. He doesn't really go far, but he goes. And he's a killer kustom historian with an awesome photo collection. I wish he was on the computer.
Just talked with Ray less than an hour ago. Said he gave the old girl a tune up and it runs great! Mick, are you thinking of the Lee Pratt shoebox that was being built in C&C? He was doing doing a Chuck DeWitt style clone. Wonder what ever happened to that car......
I didn't realize that Lee Pratt was working on the show box. It has been just too long since I've looked at the magazine article. I was going to dig it out when I saw it in Kustoms Illustrated and never made it too my library...... Tonight maybe the night. Kool question Luke, Where is that Kustom? Happy Trails, Mick
I had the opportunity to head that way when KKOA was having their 20th anniversary at Gettysburg. We backed out because of the $$ were low. Krap I wish that I had gone... One of these days we will be out there but I'll have to stay for a month to see everything. It would be kool to hear some Kustom history... Happy Trails, Mick
i've loved ray's car since i first saw it in the early 80's but damn it looks even better with bumpers on it.
Ray has kept in contact with Jim Karcher, who apparently doesn't seem to care about the car at all anymore. Ray has owned it since 1978 and restored it twice. I guess it will always be the "Ray Soff Ford" from here on out. (At least for us East Coast guys)
Is this really the first Detroit Autorama? It's so tiny compared to what it's become today. I spent all 3 days there working as a show photographer this year... and I'm pretty confident that I still didn't see everything. So cool! This thread is stellar, by the way. I've definitely read every post-ohhh the info I have learned.
Lee Pratts magazine car was called Project 50. The features ran from 82-84,then went into hidding. A guy found it in downtown Des Moines Ia and bought it in 2008. Matt Pilcher. It was at the World of wheels showthere. Unfinished and still looking good. Not a real big show, but that car made it worth going.I will have my wife teach me how to post again, pic`s tomarrow at 8:00, hopefully.
These photos are from the KustomLincolnLady Collection... I dont have these originals. But if you want larger scans... Perhaps you can contact her here.
Our Family Doctor has told me for years about an old kustom that he used to own. He had a good story and told me that it was even featured in Rod & Custom magazine. Over the past years it sound kool but I wanted to see the article. when I asked and asked and asked over the years, he couldn't tell me what issue, and when it was in the magazine, so I started to think it was just a "windy" story. Yesterday my father ate lunch with him and he brought back the R&C magazine with his car featured. Rodders Journal, Kustoms Illustrated Traditional Rod & Kulture are the ultimate but wouldn't it be awesome to have your Kustom in one of the little page magazines..... Very Kool!! Anybody know what happen to the Car? Happy Trails, Mick
