It's been a real long time ago , but , when I was a kid , my father was watching a movie , Hot Rod theme of course , but this one car , and old hippy guy was working on this old corvette , red and primer I think , all through the movie , and it seems like he thought he had something to prove to the younger hot rodders of the time , and got out in it , and wrecked the Corvette , it seems like the old timer had grey hair , pony tail , red bandana tied around his head it also seems like the movie took place in California , because the Corvette got wrecked over a mountain on the coast , and always saw him in the movie working on this old Corvette... does anyone remember this movie?

From your description, it sounds like you're talking about "King of the Mountain" with Dennis Hopper. He drove a primer and red 60's Corvette..

I haven't seen it. It's from way before my time.. But I've relentlessly looked for this movie. None of the stores here in my town have it and I'm not a fan of buying movies online.

Thanks!!!!!!!!!! I have been trying to remember that for about 3 weeks!!!!!!!!!!

  6. Definitely King of the Mountain. Harry Hamlin was also in it running a Porsche ragtop on Mullholland Drive (near Los Angeles I think). It was basically about street racing but instead of drags they ran along Mullholland Dr. I saw it in the theaters and after watching it once stayed in my seat and watched it a second time. The cops show up in a 'copter and start barking at Harry....he just cranks the tunes and leans back in the seat as I recall. That movie has to be available somewhere. Might even be parts of it on Youtube.

I just took a peek, yes you can find some of that movie on Youtube.

Was it King of the Hill, and not Mountain? I'm probably wrong.. But, hey, I learned something new today!

The movie was based on a article in Westway magazine about the guys running Mullholland drive and part of the article was about a guy named "Charlie" who drove a mid 60s stingray and never lost a race. Cool movie, saw when it was new.

That's part of the charm of these old crappy movies.
I remember, there wasn't an episode of "Kojak" where he didn't lose a hubcap, only to have it magically reappear in the next scene...
Nobody could ever take these movies seriously. All of 'em are too lousy...and fun.

    snarky this morning, aren't we?
I don't think that many guys will agree with you that "Bullitt" was a "crappy car movie".
"Bullitt" was not intended to be a "car movie", it just ended up becoming one.

Yeah, that one was good, nut you have to admit most "car" movies are pretty bad. Which is what makes them good.

  21. Do kind of remember seeing this maybe a hundred years ago on HBO. Don't recall much of the story but do remember Dennis Hopper and the primered Vette.

According to the IMDB, Grizzly Adams and Elvira were in it too, but I'm just going to have to trust them on that.
May be thinking of the wrong movie but it seems like it had some kind of story line involving the music business or a recording studio. Kind of a distinctive soundtrack too, sort of an Eagles/Poco California country rock feel.

Or I may be remembering a completely different movie altogether. :D

  22. You remember! Its the same movie. Grizzly Adams played the repair shop owner where the racers worked.

I love Dennis Hoppers line "you know whats worse than a car that won't run.....pushing a car that won't run"

If anyone is interested in buying this on DVD. Contact "cool stuff" here on the HAMB. He sells all the hard to find Hot Rod & Biker movies.

Ohhhhh, I guess I woke up on the wrong side of the bed...yeah, you're right.
    :):):)

I wonder if the producers of "Bullitt" ever had an idea that their film would have such a long-lasting impact on anyone who loves cars.
A friend of mine recently entered a car show in Chino Hills called "Friends of Steve McQueen" which helps fund the Boys Republic, a home for ayward boys. McQueen, himself was in there as a youngster)
Chad McQueen, Steve's son, was at the show all day, autographing guy's Mustang dashboard and, my friend's air box.
There was a couple of the "Bullitt" clones on hand and they ran a loop of the famous car chase all day on a big screen TV. Cool.
Although the "Bullitt" car chase was very cool, I doubt that anyone but McQueen could have made it so legendary over so many years.
I can't think of any actor that could come close to ever being such a perfect choice for that role.
    Thanks Deuces....you're a good man...:)

  27. Don't recall the movie but you must be real young if it was an old hippy guy and you were a kid. :D

I was there back in the day. "Charlie" was Charlie Woit, and ya, he was fast. I saw him run a few times but never talked to him. He usually didn't stop, just blasted through. Car was a mid-'60s Stingray fastback, lowered, flared, big block, open side pipes. Car had kind of a Grand Sport look and feel to it. He ran road race slicks all around, rears were like 13" wide. It was fun back then. Cops usually didn't hassle us too much. Now it's Britney Spears front yard.
