So i need a new car.
I love the old stuff like all of you but with my job and age i need reliability. So have any ideas on a car/ute/truck that could be done up as a custom or hotrod?

    i Was thinking

hiace van...lifted at the rear etc

    or rodeo with kustom grille?

    any ideas?

This a pre 1964 forum from what I know so I think you are barking up the wrong tree here.

If you are talking Jap crap then go to a rice site.

Try the OZ rodders site since they are local Australian hot rod site.
    Get ready for the flack....

  3. As above. We need to keep the focus here.

Y'know, before old cars were old, they were new.
Most are fairly basic mechanically, and carried many people many miles for years.

I don't understand people saying they like old cars but they're not reliable.
Keep them properly maintained and they'll keep going. Same as any car.

gee um forget that other rubbish, if its a work truck you can do an upgraded '48 on Holden ute, 50's Chev ute, need bigger? early Chev truck (love the '59/60 ones) early F truck....Studebaker M series...... all that is pretty easy to find down here (theres a '51 F100 with a 6" chop on Ebay OZ right now)

    Your exactly right!

I here it all the time........ "It's gonna be braking down, it's gonna play up, it's gonna need a lot of money."

    That's a load of crap!

I like the way you said, "Y'know, before old cars were old, they were new.
Most are fairly basic mechanically, and carried many people many miles for years."

    Perfectly executed and 100% correct!

deadbeat The way rules and regs are going , here is ..... evolving .Much like nz was like before its current reg .There are glass rods being registered weekly ,some get around without guards and we dont dob each other in ,out of jealousy .Oh , and our dollar will always be worth more than nzs ,it doesnt rain four days out of five and our crime rate is waaay lower . Just the facts .

Dont want to get off topic or hijack the post, but,,
Your $ may be more which is good for you as it costs so much to get into rodding over there. Glass rods with heater demister, triple wipers & more parts & gizmos than a Repco store. You lot drive down the road ,look over your shoulder as the highway patrol will defect your car.You cant get to the shops for milk or go to work in your rod without telling you ARSF delegate & fill some lousy handbook.A little bit of rain dont hurt,we aint frightened about getting our cars dirty or getting wet.:eek:Doesnt cost me thousands of $ a year to keep my CARS reg & on the road so I can afford to build more & support the industry.
Yeah there are some that are jealous but you get that in any hobby & I cant help the crime rate, that unfortunately is out of my hands.I just dont associate with those types.
Our daughter is 20 years old, building her first hot rod & is a apprenticed mechanic with a local hot rod & kustom shop. My kid doesnt want a hiace van that is jacked up at the rear or a rodeo that has a kustom grille, but in OZ maybe thats all she could afford. And Kiwis are real neat people,,,Deadbeat

  12. While I agree with deadbeat's comments (what do you expect? I live in NZ!), just to get back OT, can I suggest a '60s-'70s Dodge or International truck? There used to be a lot of them in Australia (shared the same body shell) and even the later one's still had the Old Skool look. There's also been a lot of these rodded over the years and I'm sure some older types could give psychomatt some handy hints.

BTW, deadbeat, I think it's cool that your kid's following her passion and not just looking for a job.

SixFive is right that a lot of what are now considered old cars were new... My 18 year-old, Import-mad grandson and I are building a not-HAMB-friendly British Ford Sierra longroof 'cause he really can't relate to the same stuff that I do, which is to be expected. Go back 40-45 years and many of my friends couldn't understand why I dug '40 Ford coupes and '51 Merc kustoms - they all dreamed of owning GTOs and Corvettes; cool cars that were the hot set up when we were in our teens.

  13. You sir are incorrect in many ways. You also seem to be unaware that different states of Australia have different rego systems.

I drive my roadster to the shop to buy milk. No one has ever stopped me.
My rego was $120. I don't have to keep a book. Don't assume you know it all when you mouth off.

Only 1 car for you buddy. Chopped & lowered EK ute, 138 with twin carbies & a cam, split headers & 3 on the floor. Otherwise, another forum.

Hey bud Im fully aware that there are different rules & regs for different states in OZ,I was born there. I dont for one minuete think that I know it all either. All I saying is that there aint no incentive for the young ones to get into Rodding with your politics & bs that goes on over there and besides who would want to build a car with chicken wire to cover up their headers anyway.A good friend of mine, Nick Rees, who is in Sydney builds roadsters for people but he tells me all the time that its getting harder to reg cars in NSW. He runs his roadster all over OZ without fenders but he is looking over his shoulder all the time. But then again you are in QLD & it NEVER rains up there & it is so "jimdandy" in your world,,Deadbeat
