Steve.... never call these pictures "boring"!
Front row seats to the show? Cool.

  5. I was told about this thread by a friend of mine who is a lurker on here. I've read it all and now have been checking in just about everyday to see what you have added. I admire your skill and guts to tackle this project and you are an inspiration to others. Thank you for posting your progress. BTW, are you a member of the Coasters? I've seen pics of your 64 somewhere before. Cheers, Brendan.

Hi Brendan thanks for the compliments ! I was a member of the Coasters for a long while, actually met my wife at Leadnorth .. but the club got too political , we got fucked around bigtime by one of the members , half of them left to form the Leadkings club and we moved down east ...seemed like good enough reasons to sever the ties lol! Check in on the weekends for updates thats usually when I do them...here comes one now!

Metal rusts so damn fast here...even when its been sunny and warm all week! So I decided to finish up as much of the quarter panel welding as I could today and get some epoxy on there to protect things till I start the actual body work ....

So I welded up a million pin holes then stripped cleaned and re-cleaned the repair pieces , even spot blasted with the mini blaster, most of the weld seams ...dont look like much but it was a good half day !

Cleaned up the "scar" from the 4 door B pillar, and cleaned up all the surface rust on the rocker area that had developed since I built it last year.

They it got a few coats of epoxy sealer

It still needs some hammer and dolly work before I can sling some mud on it ...but at least I wont have to keep cleaning the rust off !

Oh yeah and I cleaned up the back sides of the welds and repair panels that I could get at while the trunk lid is still tacked shut and shot them with some epoxy as well.

Still had a bit of epoxy left and a tiny bit of energy  so I finished cleaning up the headlight pots that had a good vinegar soak a while back. They still need a little bit of weld repair though.

Dang. As usual... good progress. I can't see myself getting much done on mine this summer so builds like yours and Rick's have to keep me going.
We tell the CFAs (Come-From-Aways) that the rust is nasty here. It takes experience to believe it. ;)
I'll warn you again about the poor holding power of the cheaper "epoxy" primers and our salty humidity. Keep her inside. Gotta keep that baby protected!

I love looking at these heroic saves. just amazing. Wonderful work. The only bad thing is you make it look almost easy. It's hard to fully comprehend what you have done from here. Great job.

Dont worry it will be inside ..most of it will get sanded off when I start the bodywork...then the expensive shit goes on ! The inside body panels is prolly the only place this stuff will stay and it will get seam sealed of the backsides of the welds then painted before I am done... it survived this long with nothin on it should be good for another 75 yrs at least by the time I will be done with it :p

Workmanship in those bare metal pics look top notch. I really want to see what this thing is going to look like with all of the Monarch trim on it, not sure I've ever seen one.

Wont be that much really ..the most distinct part of the Monarch is the grille and its pretty well fucked , but I can save a nameplate or 2 will prolly put one on the 59 Chevy dash just to play with peoples minds lol ! I will also use the Monarch hood ornament and probably the trunk badge as well , and the headlight bezels I think.

What is this going to have for a grille? A Ford one from the 4 door?

    Ok...
Too bad about the door. I guess sitting wasn't good on it.
Not sure when the next trip will be.
I'm in PH now. Going home Monday with a "TT" rear axle, an A front axle (with all the fixins) and maybe a rad and grill if I think the old clunker will haul it all.

  25. Amazing.
I just found this thread and have read every word up to now.
You mention Sam Foose and his coupe.
While I am reading this, I have sitting right in front of me the mag with his coupe on the cover.
I was reading it last night. Coincidence?

Lol Thats the one :D I musta re-read that a 1001 times. My old copy is pretty worn I should try and find a better one someday. I will be adding some new pics in the next day or 2 of my battle to try and make one trunklid from the 2 really crappy coupe ones, and the original sedan trunklid...not to mention building a new support structure for the trunk hinges...I will be glad when this part of the job is over !

  27. My gawd, man! You're an animal! You've got skills and balls! I don't think I have ever seen that much rust. Great job!

Well I am finally making some time to add the pics from the last week or so...trying to make a trunklid for this thing ! The green one I bought that looked salvageable turned out to be pretty bad...when I bolted it on it became very clear that it was bent and twisted badly...

The last pic above is after I cut out most of the inner framework so I could try and persuade it to somewhat of a normal shape... where you see the piece of cardboard the gap was almost 2 inches when I first bolted it on ![IMG]

Heres the start of this pain in the ass trunklid!!

So I cut the rotten bottom off.....

...and cut the surprisingly good bottom off the original sedan lid....

...which I then tacked into place with some spacers on the bottom for gaps...

then I lowered the "skin " over the sedan part and started hacking !

    ...all tacked in place...

    ...and fully welded .

The more I looked at the green upper skin the more I realized how crappy it was ...so agter a bit of thought I decided to do some more cuttin, seein how much I love to weld:rolleyes: The drivers side where the huge crease (the edge of the skin where its folded over onto the inner framework was bent down pretty badly as well) and all the other dents in the skin made me decide to salvage what was usable on the coupes original lid...

...so off it came ! I figured I could use the whole edge on the drivers side but the pass side was pretty rusty so I had to cut it up higher..

..cleaned it up and gave it a good phosphoric scrub and some weld through primer...

...and then prepped the old skin...I laid the "new" skin over top and screwed it down, then cut through both panels and started to tack it together...then with great difficulty and a pile o swear words and some cuttin managed to pull the old skin out from underneath the new one...
