i have my 58 ford since 1988 it has the y-block that came from the factory in it this motor has never been apart the only thing that i did was change the dizzy to get rid of points keep up reg maint on it as most guy on the east coast know i,ve driven this car every where well on the way to the lead sled meet in pa. friday in finally blew about 150 miles from home started to lose power then a big cloud of smoke shut it off got out the back of car covered with oil open the hood there was smoke coming from every part of the motor that had a gasket check the oil and none on dip stick so i knew something in side blew i can,t be mad or cry about it i put over 1000,000 miles on this y-block and it never let me get stuck before well after it cool off i tried to start it for the hell of it and yes it started so i turn it off had about 3 cans of oil in back pour it in motor started it was knocking bad i have my aaa card with me so it started back home it made it to just 96 miles from home so i didn,t have to pay for the tow i want to thank all the hambers that stop and wanted to help just shows what a great bunch of people are on here well losse change is back home i,ll be looking for a y-block or a 390 or i,ll put a sbc 350 in it no sbf,s never had any luck with them had a new ford truck with one and few old cars they turn to junk as soon has i look at them but i,m the frist to tell you that this 58 ford and the y-block in it is the best car i ever had bar none:D

Tried to "fix" it for others...
To put anything but a Y-Block or FE in that car would be tragic.
If you put a SBC in it,you'll be Banned for Life.

Condolences on the loss of your mill. That grill job is, and I will back this up, the ****. Put a damn chevy in that thing and we are gonna have an east coast/west coast '58 Ford feud.

I say keep a Y block in it out of respect for the old one. That one lasted longer than most engines do and another one should last just as long.

FE's drop in real nice and pull really hard.

  8. Oh dear God please not a sbc, build a new Y-Block and run it. I just got back from El Mirage racing a Y-Block, drove my Y-Block truck home at 70 - 80 mph very comfortably and raced my Y FED two weeks ago. The Y is alive :D live it! love it!

    Beautiful car.

Hey, at least the motor went with honor, on the road. I agree you should go with another one or at least a Ford.

    Good luck.

How is it you have had bad luck with SBF's and millions of others have no problems? You want to judge an extremely successful run of engines based on one new bad one and a couple of used/abused ones? Not that I'd put a 302 in there or anything, Y block or FE would be the only two I'd consider for the right vibe in that sedan and you can't go wrong with either one.

then you understand i,m not saying the are bad i,m saying that i have no luck with them and it was a new 86 ford pick up with a 351 and a 90 ford van with302 the used motors were 2 in my 54 ford but i know guy,s that had great luck with them but hate y-blocks i would just like to try a y-block again or a 390 (the ford motors i like) but i would not think putting a sbc in bad. it,s the motor i like best sbc motors and that,s why i would. i,m not a put a ford in a ford guy i,m a old hot rodder and use what i like or have

The biggest Chevy fan in the world, ME, is begging you to not put a chevy in it. A properly built Ford engine of the vintage that came in it when new would be my choice. Second choice..................a S.O.H.C. 427..............your wallet, your choice.

I have lusted over 58 Fords for most of my adult life, about 25 years. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do not resort to the sbc. As a HUGE y-block guy, I say.... I have run y-blocks for years, and probably always will. Talk to Tim (mctim64), he is the only guy I would have build a y-block for you. I figure, if your last one lasted 100,000 miles, why not put another in it??? I could see maybe an FE, if you find one rebuilt cheap. You have a beautiful car, my .02 would be to keep a Y block in it..

i have always like y-blocks and had many in the past but this wasn,t the fastest but was the best i ever had of any motor when i frist got it i ran the hell out of it and got a 390 to put in it when the y-block die well it ran good and was so denpenable that i sold the 390 to a buddy to put in a 62 ford that blew it,s motor that was over 10 years ago maybe you can help me i found a 292 motor out of a 62 ford dump truck that,s a rebuilt does the truck y-block have the same holes for the motor mounts? it.s a 100 mile drive from my place so i want to make sure i can use it i know that i,ll not get a great one like the frist but it will still be a good one. the frist that came with car new had arond 61,000 miles on it when i got
it didn,t use oil as long has i put 30.w in it not 5-30 and it was the only y-block that i ever had that didn,t leave it,s mark everwhere you go (rear main seal leaking rember this was a 52 year old motor that was never apart with 162,000 miles on it

I though the last Y block was 57, and the 58s had the new Ford engine. Maybe I'm just getting old. But the Y Blocks were good engines if the oil was keep clean. Iceman

Or the Y-Block and FE engines cousins, the MEL engines in say a 383, 410, 430 or 462.

Way back then, my Buddy's '58 Merc came with a 430 in it.

Yeah I've seen your 58 all over the east coast. With a descent used engine it could be back on the road in a weekend. Changing power plants will take much longer.

Wow Teddy! I thought that motor would outlive me! I dunno man, SBC is a good mill and will run well in there, but the Y block will be easy and fast to swap out. Not to mention we have all the parts for em. Hmm, maybe we can go with some Chrysler power? :)

It had a good run but **** happens. Go with either Y-Block or 390 FE to stick with the original nature of the car.

The last Y Blocks were in Ford trucks in 1964. The last car application of the Y block was the 312 in 1960 Mercurys. My parents had a 1960 Monterey 4-door sedan with the 312 in it. It topped out at about 80 mph, I'm surprised that dad could stand to go that slow back then. It's now sitting up on blocks at mom's place and the Y Block is in the corn crib.

  30. In 62 the ford cars had 292,s truck 64. except in brazil they countinued to build new 2 ton trucks with a 56 body style and Y blocks for many years. OldWolf
