just got a cool mag -brief history of hot rodding has a mel powered 5 window on the cover lots of old race photos of cars and people.
Someone will add more but, MEL engines are the 383, 410, 430, 462 cube V8s that were found the 50's, 60's Mercury, Edsel, and Lincoln. Very heavy 700+ lbs.
the boat anchors known as 383-430-462 came in mercurys, lincolns and some edsels, hence the the M, E and the L. I was too late trying to post the pic of the cover but I cant figure it out.
Oh, stupid ignorant me. I should have known that.. And I was getting frustrated over which one of these it was; Acronym Definition @Amazon.com MEL Maximum Exposure Limit MEL Maintenance Expenditure Limit MEL Manufacturing Engineering Laboratory MEL Marine Engineering Laboratory MEL Master Environmental Library MEL Master Equipment List MEL Master Events List MEL Material Engineering Laboratory MEL Maya Embedded Language MEL Melamine MEL Melbourne, Victoria, Australia - Tullamarine (Airport Code) MEL Michigan Electronic Library MEL Military Education Level MEL Minimum Equipment List MEL Minimum Essential Listing MEL Minimum Excitation Limit MEL Mobile Erector Launcher MEL Multi-Engine Land Then I thought the M might be for Mopar something... My bad, for growing up in a GM family I guess! Some one actually made up and still uses an acronym that includes Edsel? Pretty obscure, no?

a 430 t-bird won the 1959 Daytona 500, had a stock 430 MEL in it. The Gm's weren't even on the same lap!!!!!
there is a 430 in an F100 in the Rod and Kulture I just got. looks sweet. never heard of a Mercury 430 till that one.
I can't believe the bad rap the MEL gets. The 430 was the first factory motor rated at 400 hp, in 1958. They are torque monsters. The 462 was rated at 500 ft-lbs, stock. They can even be dressed up to look pretty darn decent. All the Chebby guys over at Hot Rod must have had to close their eyes and hold their noses when it was decided to put a MEL on the cover. It's about time.
Old dead thread but what the hell! Keeping the 430 mell in this even got a tripower for it Dave Hitch
