Once they are SOLD you have no more say as to what happens to them after that.
If you are concerned, it just means the HAMB has done too good a job spreading the gospel.
Never mind you can always buy them back one day when the exchange rate has improved.
The only thing to worry about is the reduction in numbers of local cars just pushes the prices up I guess. Probably harder to find projects in the long run.

    Supply and demand etc.

A fellow HAMBer sold a Caddy to a guy in Montana. The guy said he loved Caddys and owned a few. When the transport picked the Caddy up the transport driver said the car was going to be put into a shipping container. This was news to my friend.. What could he do? He sold the car....The guy that bought the Caddy never mentioned shipping it over seas....

  3. They caught on, a long time ago. Open a thread from the UK, any Scandinavian country, Switzerland, Australia or New Zealand, and you'll find they not only "get it", but leave a lot of North American cars behind, in the quality of build.

  4. x2. Some of the nicest/truest/most "HAMB-accurate" cars I've seen on here are not in North America. Don't get me wrong, there are tons of extremely nice cars here, but they aren't JUST here...

I love it when common sense is included in a thread, shame that wasn't it.
Just what's needed in a sensible thread.
Would it be better to scrap the cars then or just let them rot in a field or barn somewhere?
The ratio of American vehicles being exported to Europe is probably not that dissimilar to that of European cars being imported.(I include motorbikes of course)

Geez we'd better buy em all now before they're all gone.

Like I said before. "Dumb bastards, willing to sell our heritage to the highest bidder" Bowtie...

Funny you, ha! ha! Yep you 'dumb bastards', even after you wrecked the biggest economy on the planet, you're still the biggest economy on the planet. Not bad for a bunch of 'dumb bastards'.
How'd you get so dumb? Let me see, you made stuff like cars and sold them? and you sold a whole bunch o' stuff overseas? and you used that foreign currency to build your country into the worlds biggest economy? Wow! who'd a thought some dumb bastards could come up with THAT idea and make it work.
Whoa boy, hold on there I say, lemme get this straight, if makin' and sellin' the stuff you make overseas is dumb, what is 'smart' about makin' stuff and only sellin' local.
Ah, I know, your'e waiting for the Chinese to save you, you don't have to sell anything, right? All you have to do is hold you're dumb hand out for more chinese loans, and then using that money you can buy more chinese stuff, right?

When dumb is smart and smart is dumb, that's when you ask guys like Bowtie for his opinion.
'Bowtie is the man' on this. Seriously, his credability is strong. Believe me, his arguement is well reasoned. Trust me when I say, such a man should be listened to and taken seriously. Would I lie to you? I don't have to... when smart is dumb and dumb is dumber, Bowtie is your'e man.

I wouldn't worry too much about vintage metal going overseas. Given the expense and effort these guys go through to get into the hobby means they're serious about building the car. Have a look at the cars coming out of Sweden, Australia, etc.

I worry more about guys here fucking up decent project cars here at home because they are still too cheap. For example, for every nice shoebox Ford I see, there are at least five butchered, moused, rednecked shitboxes where someone has ruined a decent car that would now take a lot of effort to fix. I'm no restorer, but leave the red plush bench seat, console, tilt column and greasy 305 in the 1983 Buick in the yard where it belongs.

  14. I have met plenty of American car fanatics in over thirty countries during my travels overseas. I know a guy in central Turkey who has a '58 Ford retractable, a '63 Impala SS ragtop, and a '69 Mustang 302 ragtop - all red and white, and he drives them every day! Have you tried finding parts for anything like this in Turkey? Of course not! But he enjoys the hell out of all three, just the same.

I also know where a LOT of Mopar HEMI cars are in Essex and Portsmouth, England. One Challenger has been from the US to the UK and back a total of SIX times to buyers on both sides of the pond.

In Germany, I was the only American member of an all-US car club, with the oldest car being a '56 Chrysler St Regis Hemi coupe, and the newest was my '85 Dodge pickup. While in this club, I had the pleasure of accompaning the club with my Dodge to the first All-American car show...in Magdeburg, EAST Germany in July 1990. There were over 900 American cars and trucks there from 20 countries, including Russia, the Ukraine, Hungary, Poland, and the Czech Republic. All were just as enthusiastic about their American iron as ANY of you guys that whine about American cars going overseas.

So, I have NO problems seeing American cars and trucks of all types and years going overseas to enthusiastic new foreign owners. I've sent three Pontiac Bonneville convertibles and a '58 Chevy truck to Germany, and I've also brought a '67 Plymouth Belvedere I wagon home FROM Belgium, where it was bought new, BTW.

  15. That's pure nonsense!

I know several cars over the years that have gone over, and back, and over again, and back again.

I mean, when was the last time you saw something rust free with two doors get sold and shipped somewhere?

The reason why you are seeing the 1000's of cars sitting around in Long Beach may have something to do with the new import regulations here in Oz, which is making it very hard to bring in Foreign cars, thus creating a Log Jam at the ports.... see this post for further info.... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=472736&highlight=australia+importing

But fear not... We are Gear Heads of the highest order over here in OZ. As stated in other posts..."We get it" and have highly skilled people that can Rebuild or Improve or Maintain to the highest order.

........ and if you like, you can buy them back one day.

Some of those cars are going from being one mans parts car to another mans dream car. Over here in Oz there are no cars left, there were never any really to start with. I drool over what you guys part out, to get a potential rod or kustom over here is near $10,000 AUS plus! and that is for an untouched, dragged out of the desert bomb! And a new law just passed says that if it has mods after 1989 it has to be sent back or crushed at the buyers exspense! We appreciate the opportunity to purchase cars..... we really do...... Anyone got a spare Nailhead? Been looking for one for 10 months.

It's time like these that I'm glad your name is bowtie because I would be embarrassed to have anyone with a name related to Chryco or Ford bashing fellow hotrodders and restorers NO MATTER WHAT COUNTRY OR BRAND NAME THEY PREFER TO BUILD.

    nuff said.
