No special engineering, just plowing through high water near St. Albans, VT in a '32 Ford.

Note that he's hand-signaling. If we saw anybody do that today in a modern car, we'd probably laugh at them.

Charles Leroy Pauley was born on December 31, 1912 at Herington, Kansas. As a teenager, he remembers watching such drivers as John Gerber and “Dad” Harrier race at Abilene, Kansas when he attended the races there with his uncle, Henry George Pauley (1897-1962).

Charles Pauley raced from 1932 through 1935 spending most of that time in his uncle’s #14 bobtail Chevrolet. Some of the later races were in a white #28 Frontenac that Henry purchased from Jim White shortly after White moved to Herington, Kansas.

Another photo of my Grandads plumbing co. on the job, somewhere in Illinois around 1925.
They did some bigger jobs as this shot shows.
My dad didn't take over the bussiness. He joined the Marines and came to Calif.
    during WW2.
My Dads kneeling in front of Grandad.. on the left.

Note: they all had their sleeves rolled up...and not just for the photo op.
This is pre hard hats too.

Another speedster that gets the juices flowing. The awning is an unfortunate distraction, but the car and occupants more than make up for it. The outboard seat would have surely provided a thrilling if not completely safe ride, but notice the creature comfort - a foot rail for the daring passenger (in this case, not much help for Fido). Maybe someone can identify the make. Electric lights and Klaxon horn make me think this was c. 1913.

Sorry I'm late to this party! I've always liked dog/car photos, ever notice they had GREAT cars and homes? This guy has a Stevens-Duryea and a driver, life is good, I'm coming back in my next life as a dog.

Better late than never. Nice to see you here, and thanks for the photos. I've got some other interesting car/dog pix I will have to dig out and post, and a few S-D pix too. True enough - there are many pix of great cars and homes combined (maybe they could afford the cameras, where others couldn't?), and they are always delightful. But I also love photos of humble cars in less affluent settings -- you often get a really honest, and sometimes touching glimpse into life "back then" that is not staged.

That said, here's a completely staged photo in every sense. This is a Leach, made in LA in the early 1920's for only a few years, and with a big six engine supposedly designed by Harry Miller. The lady is actress Gloria Swanson.

    That's a good picture of Swanson ^.

If you ever what to see Gloria Swanson in a good flick watch the movie " Sunset Blvd " it's favorite of mine.
It's a strange almost Bio of her real life as a Silent film star that life passed by when talkies came out.
Her performance is outstanding as is William Holdens and others if you like old flicks.

This is border line time wise as a couple of the cars are 41's but it is a neat image.

A Leach, eh? Sure that wasn't a Leech? LOL. I heard her other Hollywood friends drove "Gold Diggers!" Gary

SWI, RE Post 162, I didn't know before, but I looked it up. Seems to be Virginia Vale in the '41 "Blonde Comet," a romantic action-drama. A little-known fact is that Barney Oldfield appeared as HIMSELF in the movie!

I actually just purchased and watched that film.
    that's why I recognized it.
I collect car related movies, everything form the more modern, to the esoteric early films that cars were prominent in.
The Blond Comet, is available for next to nothing in the discount bins and on e-bay.
Kind of interesting if you are into this kind of thing, which I am.

And yes, Barney Oldfield was in the film in his only credited film appearance.
