That's great. Dick was a neat guy. Once on a practice day, I was standing beside Dick when Tom Carnegie said, "There's debris on the track." I asked Dick if he had hired another French driver.

I know this is off topic, but there's a name I haven't heard in awhile.
    Bay Darnell.
See attached photo - imagine it is a Sprint Car.

I hope someone can help. I'm looking for the HISTORY and PICTURES of two sprint cars that ran in the 1950s and 1960s.

#21 Lester Robertson Sprinter - Based in Los Angeles, but race throughout the Midwest in the mid 50s, then back on the West Coast. Curly Boyd, A J Shepard, and Bob Mathouser may have driven the car for Lester. Les Crawford won a 100 lap race at Ascot in October of 1962 in the car. Early, the car may have been Cadillac powered, but was later changed to a Chevy.

#33 Mack Terry Sprinter - From what I understand, the car was based in Tulsa, Oklahoma and race there, and the surrounding areas. At the time, it may have been a fairly dominate car. Mack Terry was the owner and the only known driver of the car. He moved the car to Los Angeles in late 1961(?) where I'm told he died of cancer. Before his death, in 1962, he also drove the #97 for Vel Meletich.

    Thanks in advance.

Numbered 23 here with Shep aboard but I suspect it's the car, probably around 1960/61.

That's a great photo, 11214, imagine going that fast with your arms crossed up like
that...like a prizefighter, only differentt. Joe Marsiano had asked about an in/out setup, got some photos last night, haven't had it apart yet, probably won't mess with it this year...need a steel bell, maybe a trans, haven't decided, so just a starter for now...

You're car is coming along nicely. Is this the car, you mentioned a while back, that you're building to do some LSR racing?

I noticed Hogle next to Parnelli. Another great driver that stayed mostly local but was one of the smoothest I ever witnessed in a sprint car.

The shot Heath in the Vel's 97 brings back some great memories of Ascot.

Thanks, it's just a low end toy, was the old Outer Limits track house car, got it as a roller set up for dirt. and am using parts already around to get it running. We'll mess around like that for this summer, then do asphalt, hopefully get to Maine with it, but certainly wouldn't call it an LSR car, 'cause it's just for fun, don't care how fast it goes....Really don't need another project, but it's fun to use stuff you already have, and not have to buy everything.

Any info on Thomas Eng Co. I have this steering wheel release hub, I have no idea where I got it but is a neat piece.

I used to have one just like that. I think I sold it on Ebay a coupple of years ago, or I lost it on a shelf someplace in the shop.

I believe the Thomas Eng. Co. you have was made by Mike Thomas in Des Moines, Iowa. Last I heard Mike had move out of Des Moines to I think Adel Iowa.
I the 70's thur the 90's it was the unit to have for removing a steering wheel at least in the midwest. If I remember right it was almost like standard equipment on a Trostle car.

Don't know the history of it, but it deserves better than having some guy from a geico commercial beating on the hood with a stick

There is an event held every October called the "Legends of Ascot". I attended in 2006 and it was great!. Anyone that ever went to Ascot should attend at least once. You'll meet some of the greatest CRA drivers.

I just visited their website, and this year they are honoring Vel Miletich. (I evidently misspelled his name in my original post.) Vel's Parnelli Jones Racing had Parnelli Jones, Al Unser, Mario Andretti, and Joe Leonard drive at Indy. The turbine cars were sponsored by Andy Granatelli's STP Corp. Quite a history.

I don't think Parnelli actually ever drove for his own team, and when he ran the turbine in '67 he an Miletich weren't part of the ownership. I do know that the wedge turbine that Joe Leonard drove in '68 was sponsered (and possibly owned) by Vel's-Parnelli Jones at Riverside, but Art Pollard's ride (which was later taken over and crashed by Mario) was still Granatelli-STP.
The VPJ team's first driver was Ziggy Snider, in a Mongoose.
