You ever pop a hood and scratch your head?

  1. When I was a kid, in my home town there was a red late 60s VW beetle with a 455 olds in the front...weird looking, also a Corvair powered beetle, then a friend of my dad's put a 1.6 Kent (Pinto 4 banger) in the back of a Beetle, weird. I've seen a flathead powered 57 Chevy, a 64 Ford F100 with a Buick 400, and a `51 Ford F1 with a Mopar poly 318, why? Dunno, but remember in the 80s when Pro Stockers were running Olds diesel blocks converted to gas use? Or now when people are putting diesels in everything...On Power Tour there was a dude with a clean Chevelle, though some kind of Pro Street/Touring nonsense, with a Duramax diesel in it....ick. To each his own I guess.

in HS, Doug B had a 47 Chev with a 318 Plymouth....ran very well. Just a weird combo, but so was Doug.

I bought a 65 Stepside Ford off a co-worker for parts for my 61. I go out to his Dad's house to haul it off and pop the hood. Starin back at me is a 351 Cleveland with finned valve covers and an Edelbrock intake, the Cleveland was backed by a 4 speed toploader with an old Hurst shifter on it. Best 400 bucks I ever spent, and yes it runs like a striped assed ape.

Disclaimer: No apes were harmed in the making of this engine.

That's what I said when I first read it.... That's 455 Buick stuff that was "never" factory installed in a car... There are a few rare over the counter pieces floating around... So.... Let's hear it from you Buick guys on what those Stage III pieces are.... I'm all ears.. er... eyes! :)

i recently bought a 63 galaxie convertible for the wife, paid $500 for it and a parts car that had a 352 in it so i never even looked under the hood of the convertible. got it home popped the hood and it also had a 352 in it, then i realized the car was a stick that someone had dropped another motor and auto trans in and never hooked up. all the plumbing and wiring was there so i hooked it up and it fired up like a champ, runs great

    nice surprise for sure

In the mid '80s, I opened the hood on an early '70s Jeep Wagoneer in a junkyard to find a 327 with a 'vette dual quad setup. About five years later, in the local U-Pull-It yard, I scored a pair of Fenton headers off an otherwise stock 235/PG '61 Impala four door sedan.

Here's a Buick Stage III '70 455 4-bolt Block.. So far, only 2 are known to exist. I'll check and see if any Stage III heads were ever produced...

I know that car Teddy. Red coupe de ville. If the injected turbo-charged LS1 wasn't bad enough, he chopped out the gauge cluster and stuck a flat piece of aluminum with lame Autometer gauges, and then a B&M ratchet shifter. Woof

    i had and original 76 t/a 455 4speed but when i had it it was powered by a 350 buick /auto

Just remembered a car at GG in Puyallup several years ago - you didn't have to pop the hood. It was a 49-52 Chev 2dr sedan with a factory 'see through' hood insert, and if you looked down, you saw a rotary engine. Car was clean as a whistle as was the installation.

There was a '64 Ford pick up in the old Keifer,OK salvage yard that had a 235 Chevy in it. Saw a Willys coupe project many years ago with a IH Scout four banger in it. Spotted three Chevy V-8 Jaguars in the local pull-a-part yard at the first of the year.

455 was a popular swap for a while on 6.2 diesels when they crapped out. good torque, kept the truck on the road and pulling. I dont know if those trucks got the Chev/ BOP version of the TH350/TH40 or not.

In High School, me and a buddy bought a '73 Ranchero that to original owner had pulled the 460 C-6 combo and put in a 200 3 speed manual because he thought it would be better for gas mileage. Well he never quite got it running because he wasn't able to get the clutch linkage worked out. He bought a Falcon Ranchero and parked the '73 until we bought it. We re-installed the 460 and C-6 with a few tweaks and got it running high 13's. When I went into the Air Force Mike bought out my half of the project. And here is the kicker he still has it.
