I guess I will start this one..
back in mid 80's I built a little street driven B/Gasser for a friend, started with a 48 or so Fiat Topolino body shell that at one time was a B gassser. Still had all decals and class logo on the side, I built a 2x4 square tube frame from scratch, used the dragster dropped no brake front axle (chromed Bicycle style wheels,)
A 289 and C-4, full roll cage narrowed 9" rear hand made traction bars and panhard locator bar. used VW rear fenders and no front fenders, kept ALL the receipts,
went to the DMV with the guy that I built it for, told the DMV it was a 34 Fiat, woman there (3 counter positions) argued with me as to it needing front fenders, I pointed out to her that Oregon didn't require fenders before 1935, and that according to Oregon's requirements this was a "reconstructed" car. she continued to argue with me and stated that it "Looked like a Boulevard racer" to her.
I told her that it didn't make any difference what it LOOKED like I wanted it registered as what it was, a 33 fiat reconstruct.
next thing I know we were talking to the office manager, he told me if I could come up with a photo of a 33 or earlier Fiat, he would consider it.
Fortunately one of the local street rod members just so happenned to have a Fiat, with 33 ford fenders on it, I went to him and asked if he had any pics I could use to show the DMV, he only had one of those little keychain mini "viewer" things that would usually give you a black eye, (but his didn't)
Took that back to the DMV and showed it to the manager, he was extremly reluctant to actually look at it and the lady I had already been dealing with said that it was irrelevant because she had spoken to the District manager in southern Oregon and the district manager had told her

" It is not up to us ((DMV)) to determine the year of the car, it is up to the owner to proove to the patrolman that stops him what year the car is."

this is the most eloquent statement I have ever heard. ( How do you prove what year it is? you show them the title or registration, with matching numbers)
My friend started to quibble, but I kicked him in the shins, told him to shut the _Uck up
we walked out of there with the paperwork stating he owned a 33 Fiat. Special assigned VIN number and he received a title a few weeks later
The really surprising thing about this????

The district manager was also the president of the Multnomah Street Rod Club........ gotta love the way things work dontcha?

I find nothing funny about dealing with DMV... Unless of course you consider both ElPolacko and myself being forcibly extricated from two different DMV locations at the same time trying to title and register the same car! The moral of the story? A three day across town trip pass will indeed get you from Phoenix to L.A. Roadster show with out raising an eyebrow...

What I have found out over a lot of years, as far as the DMV goes, is that you volunteer NOTHING. answer ONLY what they ask. and give them NOTHING else. Don't argue, because They KNOW they have you by the shorthairs. and seem to get pleasure out of your being upset. don't argue because they will just make it harder the more you argue.
They all seem to think they are a gift to humankind, let em believe that and just get what you need, get out and then laugh at them

I was a teenager and just got my first car and had to register it. At the time you had to go to the main DMV office in downtown Milwaukee. I got down nice and early, my dad warned me it could take a better part of the day because they don't move too fast. I get down there and stand in a long line waiting my turn. Finally the line moves I get within site of the counter and there was this old fossil taking the paper work. Almost every person who came up to old stone face was sent back because an i was dotted or t crossed correctly. Finally I'm the third in line and some poor Hispanic lady went up to the counter and stone face started giving her a hard time about something and sent her packing to fill out the paper work correctly and start at the back of the line again. The person in front of me was a really nice looking woman in her 20's, very nice. Old stone face glanced up from his paper work and got the biggest grin on his face. His disposition completely changed, he showed her were she needed to enter this piece of information and where to sign, he got very helpful. His wood must not have gone limp by the time my turn came because he still had remnants of a smile on his face and I got my car registered in a matter of minutes without a hitch. Maybe I just did everything correctly, but I doubt it.

  9. Last December I sold an O/T van to a guy from out of state who needed a transit permit for it. So he brought some paperwork from the insurance company to get it, you need to have a letter from them with the vehicle VIN on it and some other info.

Now at our DMVs you go to a front counter and get a number, then go to a window where you actually do the transaction.

Well, the broad behind the window didn't like what the guy had because the insurance agent made it up on two sheets, stapled together. We ended up having to go to Kinkos to fax to the guy's agent, and get a sheet made up exactly how they wanted on the ins. co. letterhead faxed to the DMV. What should have taken half an hour took 2 1/2.

The only funny part in all this is in the process of trying to get this done, we go back to the front counter guy and ask again, he even goes and talks to this broad and another guy for us, and he comes back and says outright that common sense would dictate that this is good enough, but apparently common sense isn't in effect today - even he was disgusted and he worked there.

Here In Ohio we have the "BMV" which is not owned by the Federal government and is actually Franchised. I learned that last week, weird huh??. Any way There is no line and I can get a title for just about anything without a hitch. I walked in there with an insurane card for a 56 chevy and walked out with a title. This after the lady asked me if it was a 56 chevy blazer hahah. Gotta love it . I guess its good Karmah from having dealt with the Chicago DMV for so many years

My story isn't so much funny as it is amazing...

A few years ago, I wasn't doing anything with my project vehicle (new job, not a lot of time and a little short of money), so after sending in the license renewal, I decided to cut the insurance back to comprehensive since I didn't plan on driving it for a while. The DMV computer picked up on the insurance thing and I got a letter informing me that my plates were suspended until I provided proof of insurance. I just let it slide until the next year's renewal when I decided to put the car back on the street. I sent in the renewal fee and proof of insurance. Shortly thereafter, I received a notice that I owed a $14.00 Non-Op fee for the past year, which I submitted. A few weeks later, I was sent notification that my plates were reinstated. However, there was not a current year sticker included.

Here is the amazing part: I called the 800 number on the paperwork and ACTUALLY SPOKE TO A REAL PERSON!. I explained my situation and the lady was very apologetic and said that she would send the sticker. In about a week, I RECEIVED THE STICKER THAT WAS PROMISED!!

Yet another sign of the impending apocalypse...

  15. I gotta admit we have a couple of really good guys that work with "special cars" when they come in,one time not to long ago a "guy" I know had bought a 30s sedan and couldnt find the vin on the frame when he took it in,well what happened when the cut the frame for the mustang 2 the chopped out the damn number so the VIN was gone CRAP!!!!!,first thing mentioned was a HUGE complete inspection and a salvage/bonded title (registered as a new year) OH HELL NO!!!!,Then this guy says relax man,go home and "clean" the frame where it should be and maybe somewhere close you will find the number....REALLY??? yeah ya know old larry the number stamper at the factory mighta been sick that day and ole Sid down the line put it in the "wrong" place tryin to help out, somewhere close........well low and behold when my "friend" got to scraping the frame he "found" the numbers about a foot up the frame.amazing.....and they issued a title in the state where my "friend" lived by the same guy when he took it back................and they lived happy ever after......

I knew this had to be a southern oregon story! Back in 2005 I waqnted to put my 52 ply on the road as it had to have the vin checked I took the car down the lady comes out and says the vin is missing I told her no its a motor vined car, she looked at me like I was crazy. she told me no car company ever did that I told her with mopar it depends where the car was built. this is a Calif car so its on the motor. She then tells me she thinks its a stolen car as the book says its on the door? WTF. so before I know it theres a oregon stater parked behind my ply ready to dance. we go inside and he looks in his book and it shows clearley that it is indeed a motor vin car! she still wants the whole car inspected by her state guy and I have to wait till he comes back from vacation. 7 weeks later I have the car inspected and he asked what the issue was. I explane what happen and he started to laff and sayed it was normal for her. Last time I used Grants Pass DMV.

He got pulled over like a year later and the cop said we have a problem on your liscens it say female you need to get this fixed. The guy goes to the dmv long story short had to go to doctor and get a note saying he was a guy.

I got a notice 8-10 years ago from the DMV saying I had to get a smog certificate for my truck. I went in and told them it was a F-350 diesel so the guy behind the counter came out to take a look. I opened the fuel door .... diesel only. I showed him my fuel gage... Diesel. I opened the hood .. he asked "WHAT AM I SUPOSE TO LOOK FOR" I asked him if he saw any spark plugs? NO.....then I told him to stick his nose in the exhaust and I'll start it for him (jokingly). They wonder why California is in the shape it is in

You're right it was the hot rod council, but he was district manager over Coos Bay, which is where the car was built and where it was titled. gotta remember this was 25 years ago. and a couple hundred cars ago too

Here in WA, we have both state owned & run Dept's of Licensing (DOL), and franchised DOL's. Near my house is a franchised one, and I HATE going into it (sidenote: I don't anymore, I do whatever I can by mail to avoid the add'l fees and the bitchy attitudes).

When I bought my '56 210 HT (out of California), I already had a WA Year of Manufacturer (YOM) plate and necessary '56 metal tag to license it under. (I also knew how the rules read for registering a YOM plate in WA by having visited the DOL website). The 20-something woman gave me a load crap the whole transaction - a real condescending and loathesome bitch. After we muscled our way through the car's title transfer , it then came to the plate & tag , and I could tell her attitude was she didn't personally want me to license it using my YOM plate and '56 tag under any circumstances, if she could help it. First thing she told me is WA didn't have green colored plates. I told her in '54-57 they did, so she pulled some book out and looked it up, and closed the book. OK, they did, but it wasn't three letters and three numbers (ABC 123), so it had to be a fraud. I said they didn't use that pattern at that time, but one pattern was 4-6 numbers followed by one or two letters (denoting the county registered in), amongst some other patterns, as well. She reached for the book again, found the section and read the first acceptable pattern, which mine didn't match and closed it with a bang and put it away, saying she wouldn't accept the plate. Now, I'm told the ability to read upside down (and backward) is not an ability shared by all, but I can do it. I saw and read some other pattern descriptions, amongst which mine was one. I'm trying to remain cool, but I'm about out of patience and I'm telling her that my pattern is described in her book but she isn't buying it. Things are getting a bit tense and louder. The owner of the franchise has begun to notice this, and she comes over to investigate. The lil bitch starts off by saying I'm trying to register my car with an unacceptable or fraudulent plate and that I'm 'hostile' because she won't accept it. The plate is laying on the counter along with the tag, the owner takes a look at it, and says it looks like an acceptable plate. The girl is seething now, and indignant when the owner asks her to pull the book she was referring. So, the owner reads the next plate numbering pattern description aloud to he girl, which my plate clearly meets. The owner was keeping her cool, and being gracious, and in a tone akin to a mother speaking to a young child, asks something along the lines of "Does his plate not meet that description". The lil bitch won't say a word now, as she has been shown up. With a scowl, she wordlessly completed my car's registration and as I was collecting my paperwork to leave the owner came near and apologized for any inconvenience I experienced. I think the owner knew she was being a bitch, but didn't want to get into it with people in the DOL, at that time. It was irritating, but gratifying to get it done, since I knew what I knew. To this day, I have no idea why that lil bitch was so invested in my not using that plate.

(sorry, it wasn't my intention to write a book - but thanks for reading all that)

What I never understood about the DMV is what does it matter what I want to do, as long as I'll pay?

I just bought an out of state 57 Chevrolet Sedan Delivery. Went into the local DOL independent franchise. The car is STILL in Indiana, it's paid for, and I have the State of Indiana title signed by the previous owner. Now, there's been a problem getting a transporter to actually pick up the car, and truck it up here to Washington State; the prior owner was'nt in any hurry to get the car out of there. I get my State of Washington application for title done, get my new plates, registration, pay the taxes on how they classed the car; they have a 6 level means of arriving at your cars value, no matter what you paid for it, but if you tell them you paid more than they say it's worth, you pay the tax on what you actually spent. So, play the game. Anyway, the car finally gets here, and the very next day, my title arrives in the mail. Just play their game, play by their rules and moods, and keep your fingers crossed. The moral: you can argue with an IDIOT all you want, but they'll drag you down to their level, and beat you with experience. Butch/56sedandelivery.

  30. a few years back i sold a car (72 chevy) to a buddy of mine. he went to the dmv to register it and the broad behind the counter INSISTED that it required a smog check because it was an out of state car (ANY 72 year model vehicle is smog exempt).... he, knowing nothing, left rather dejected and called me to figger it out. i went to the DMV website and downloaded the vehicle code which exempts the vehicle from smog inspection. i took it in to the office and presented it to the clerk. her response..."I dont know about all that, but you need a smog check". to which i responded "let me talk to your supervisor". a quick gum smack and neck snap and she disappeared behind the glass where i could see her informing her super what a pain in the ass was standing at the counter. he returned and "took inventory" of the situation (and was equally clueless). we bantered for a few minutes even with the code right in his face in black and white. even still he had to go "make a call". eventually persistence and a solid interpretation of state code paid off, but i was still amazed at how inept our gov't system really is.
