If I'm not mistaken, that's Roger Wolford doing the welding.

Back then there were gas, arc, and heliarc. Chassis Research frames were mild steel so they were easly gas welded, chromeoly had to be heliarced as gas and elect. arc put too much heat in the metal (chromeoly) and made it brittle.

Actually the original use for 4130 cm tubing was in aircraft frames and they were all gas welded before heliarc/TIG came on the scene. Arc or MIG welding will make a 4130 frame brittle in the area of the weld but only because the heat input is so abrupt and goes away quickly. The same amount of heat is needed to fuse the material no matter how it is input. With gas welding the heat affected zone is usually larger because it takes longer to melt the metal at the weld as even a hot gas flame is cooler than any form of arc type weld (if enough amperage is used).

Here are a few pictures while I was building my Woody chassis. I had the whole chassis assembled on the jig with plastic zip ties and the it was tacked together. I hack sawed all the tubing and fish mouth all the tubing on a belt sander.

Yes, it's been back-halved twice. And originally it was 165 wb with inj sbc on fuel but had an unfortunate wheelstanding incident and now is 225 wb. My next car will be a 180 wb SPE with an inj on pop BB chev, high gear, clutch and reverser. Shorty body and no frills. :D Towed on an open trailer behind my 55 chevy of course. :) Lippy

The painter got this one to the point where he did not need the frame to line up the graphics any more so it is headed to the blasters and then to be powder coated.

The frame is at the blaster and he is trying to get it done by Wednesday so that I can take it to the powder coater before I fly out to California.

Question: Has that frame been SFI tagged yet?

    Bruce,
I am with you on that one. I presume that there is a bolt in upright to fill that big hole but it sure does not look as if it fits any SFI criteria that I have.
