Anyone know this car and driver? Early '70's, Fremont. I think it's Johnny Colvard from Vacaville.

Gasser Reunion at Norwalk, Every thing there was cool. But the turn out was very small. I'd bet there wasn't more then 100 cars total.
Bummer, maybe it will be better next year.

Story around Blair's Speed Shop was that Harold did die at San Fernando, driving for Pat Akins, though I can't confirm it. Akins was a top fuel guy from the Pasadena area who partnered with Ray Hawkins (Les Hawkins brother), and others. Joe LaCosta also drove for Akins.

Maybe thats correct. I believe someone will come along with the answer.
Again, Rodder's Journal disputes this.I grew up just a few blocks from the Nicholson Brothers Speed Shop that photo of which I posted on the previous pages on this thread.
Do got his nickname"Dyno" from working at the Chevrolet dealer nearby.
The brothers speed shop was closed after Harolds death. The photo of that speed shop was taken from a Arcadia High School yearbook from 1953. The Nicholson's bought that small ad to help the high school pay for the yearbook.
Don also worked at Ollie Prather's body shop, which was (and still is) next to the speed shop that Don and Harold owned in that old photo from 1953.
The speed shop was closed, as I understand it, after Harold died.
Don then spent many years as a tune-up man at a Chevrolet dealership where he got his nickname.
If the 1959 date of Harold's death is true, then there's about 6-7 years that are missing from Don's bio.
I'm sure "The Rodders Journal" makes mistakes, as all publications do from time to time, but they have a pretty good history of doing lots of homework.
Part of the fun of any hobby is the detective work that goes on, just like this.
So...maybe someone will chime in and clear this up.

P.S. The Ollie Prather shop is still there...maybe today I'll get a photo of it for you guys. Ollie campaigned an Indy car out of that little shop after WWII....his son, Roy, still runs it...

    here i go again!

= = those of you who've read this before can go to the next post = =

    this is not a dragster.

it was a bonneville streamliner, sans body.

it was run by bert peterson and noel black, b&n automotive of sacramento, calif.

the name of the car was motion I.

it was not named rhino-saurus as presented in hot rod magazine.

noel black was killed in this car in 1970.

Not much good came out of the styles of the 1970's...crappy disco, flared bell-bottom pants, the Ford Granada, etc., etc.

BUT! (And I know a thing or two about BUTS)...the funny cars of that era looked bad and nasty BIG TIME......

being a journalist, myself, i offer this: don't trust everything you see in print or on the news!

i have no idea from where the 325 mph crash-speed came

the other seriously injured driver mentioned in the article to sound as if tit was a result of noel's crash was mel chastain, who crashed at (as i remember) 282 mph

there is and never has been been a bonneville racing association

i don't remember it being windy. but, even if it was, there is no way bob higbee would have sent any car, let alone a 400 mph car down the track. the alleged driver quote is bullshit or way out of context.

mickey t's challenger record was 354 mph, not 254

we did run 352 mph on mickey's record with the chute out for half of that mile in a shakedown run earlier in the week, burning a piston in the process.

there is a bit of speculation on the speed in the last mile of the last pass because the car disintegrated in the middle of it.

motion 1 had no transmissions and had very unique 1:1 gear ratio differentials from forklifts, so it took 4-miles just to get those hemis to start laying 'em down.

a piece of the debris (for years thought to be a tire/wheel) physically broke the timing light at a speed of 417 mph after scrubbing off speed for 1/2-mile.

i'm sure my soap boxery gets old to some of you. sorry for that.

but, because erik rickman mentioned in an article that "pit talk" gave the car the name "the rhino-saurus" and the seeming endless supply of pictures of the car running at the drags for a little financial support to get their self-financed lsr challenge in motion (pun intended), coupled with noel's death, i've found it necessary clear up history revisionists distorting the real story.

Thanks, drofrockology. As an old newspaperman myself, I've wondered several times through the years just how much research some alleged "reporters" do on their stories. It bothers me, just as it does you and others, when I find errors in a story on a subject I know a little about, like motorsports, because it makes me wonder how accurate their reporting is in other areas.

makes you wonder if what we're watching on the nightly news is accurate.:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

  26. Thanks! I thought the artical looked more than a little off. I'm relatively new to LSR but I didn't think there was ever a "Bonneville Racing Ass." and the speeds didn't quite make sense either.
