Ok guys, Im a fat bastard (about-265) and 6'2". I just picked up an old saginaw steering box attached to the column to put in my model a build. But I can't seem to find a good placement where the column doesn't interfere with with foot room dramatically. I channeled my body 4 inches so My tranny hump creates a challenge in it self. Does anyone have any tips? And pictures of your pedal setups in channeled cars would be awesome. Thanks
Buy one of those STEER CLEAR things. Available in 8, 10, 12, 14, and 16 inch offsets. The shaft mounts low. The steering colum mounts high on the firewall. Sombody post a pic for the guy.
I think ive seen an add for those somewhere. Its just that whole "buy" thing that I cant do a whole lot of these days
It is not an easy thing on a channeled A, and I am a scrawny dude. Mine is channeled 3", and has 3 pedals. I had to push the steering box out past the firewall. If I ever get around to working on it, via a u-joint, I will run the steering shaft almost straight up behind the pedals, and then through another u-joint, to the column. Still not sure where my clutch foot is going to rest when it is not on the pedal.
We built a full fendered A Touring for a guy. I got it for the shakedown, had to drive in Tevas and then run the gas with my toes until we reworked the seating for more room. Even then, it was a two footer left brake, right gas column in the middle. My point? You may need to do more than just mess with the box, look at every possible inch of room in an A. Removing the toe kicks can help a ton.
Well, you are big & there's always limited room. Tman raises a good point..you might consider reconfiguring the toe kicks. Here's a shot of my floor/firewall, where there are no toe kicks. I didn't have a firewall to start with, so I just made it flat. When you think about it, what exactly are the toe kicks for? Also, take note that I notched the trans hump for the gas pedal foot rest. Make steering U-joints your friend. At risk of making myself look like a dope, note the patched hole where I originally had the steering column. What was I thinking? Try all kinds of different stuff & do a lot of mocking up. Mine's not an A, by the way, but close to it...a 5 1/2" channel, but I'm 5'9."
That looks preety crafty there fleetside. But at the risk of sounding like a giant dope, what the hell is a toe kick?
Get an ididit "shorty" column. See their website for details. I have one that I'm looking to sell. PM me if interested.
The toe kick I always thought was just the angled floor piece where it comes up to meet the firewall. If you have floor pedals & put the clutch in all the way to the floor, your foot would be at a comfortable right angle to the lower part of your leg. Is it there for any other reason other than resting your left foot at a reasonable angle? Anyway, if that angled piece (what ever the hell it's called) was eliminated, you'd be able to (at least) stretch your left foot out farther.
in answer to your question... none! i have no footroom in my roadster but bein 5ft 7, i can wiggle in n out anyway. those steerclears are about 600 bucks and i'm like you, i'd rather not part with that kinda cash if i can avoid it...
I think Troy Ladd built a 'steer clear" using an old timing chain/timing gears and some bearings/ingenuity. Looks like a fairly simple thing to fab up?
The angle floorboard ("toe kick" or "toe board") is there help cool the engine compartment. Air flows in through the radiator, around the engine and out at the bottom of the firewall. Without the angled floorboard, it won't flow as smoothly.
man i just saw yer floorboard pics.... i could use that much space as a studio apartment! theres a guy outta texas i think his names hogshead thats buildin his own steerclear thingamajig. you might drop him a line and see if he's got any pointers or ideas. or you for him for that matter.
My gas pedal is on top of the trans hump .Like the one pictured .Im a skinny bastard ,These cars just dont have room .
That is what makes them fun to drive.............I am 5' 7" and my A Truck is not channeled but it is a standard shift and has a 5" chopped and I am cramped in it. But I still have a great time driving the thing.
A friend of mine has had one of those on order for his Model A for over a year now. The manufactures told him they are waiting for a big order from their suppliers to produce them again. And it may not be the size he is wanting.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
