I do not think it would work. The cross flow is design that the water goes in the one tank then across the core to the other tank before it goes back into the engine..

With the flathead you would have a upper and lower hose going in to each tank. I think the water would just go through the tank and not through the core.

    But I could be wrong.

I'd look for a better expert....and don't believe all the "experts" that tell you all flatheads over heat.

Get some radiator flush and start out with a clean original radiator.

it would be interesting to see how you plan on running the radiator hoses.

  7. To start with you probably already have good answers about hose routing from the other fellas.

But here is something to think about. The flatty in the 50 didn't have any more radiator than the one that came in the 50 to start with. Never owned a 50 but I did own a '54 merc with a built flatty that we drove all over the country. Never had a heating problem. granted that was 40 years ago but all that means is that we didn't know it would over heat and it didn't.

just make sure that everything is clean to the max and your pumps are good. Your clean to the max and good pumps will put you ahead of what we had.

I dont have a original radiator I'm purchasing one and if I have to invest $350 to $700 I want to make the best decision for cooliing my flathead . I put new water pump and extras while the motor is still on the stand I'm just trying to check all my options thanks everyone

  9. Guess I'm just trying to ease your mind.

There are a lot of flatties that overheat just because there are a lot of fellas that use junkyard motors and radiators. They really never had the cooling problems that the legends have given them.

you would have to run the two uppers to one side at the top, then the two lowers would go to the other side at the bottom. can't see any reason to run a cross flow with a flathead. hoses running all over would be a good reason not to.

But that was then. This is now, a particularly warmer period, globally.
When that was first introed, I said, "Omigosh! How're we gonna cool the L-Heads?"

  12. I think the short answer is that a crossflow will not, in and of itself, cool any better than than the original style rad. Cooling surface area, air flow and the condition and cleanliness of the cooling system are the issues that you need to address.
