I am being told it is very difficult to mold Lexan / Polycarbonate due to the moisture which has to be evaporated out of the material. One would not think of Lexan having moisture within the product. This moisture then creates issues with heating times, hight temp's for molding lexan, etc... Any knowledge regarding molding Polycarbonate / Lexan?

 

Yep, Lexan is difficult to form... THE MOISTURE THING SOUNDS RIGHT. please note that in the link I posted above the manufacturer states:
*PLEASE NOTE $240.00 DRYING CHARGE FOR 1/4" LEXAN*
It also notes that lexan can only be blown to 1/3 of its diameter while plexi can be stretched to 1/2 the diameter.

 

I was reading that, interesting. I have sent that particular company an email.... I will post their response once I receive a reply, as I have received few PM's enquiring on the same type of canopy.

I know this is a long way from home but Faeth AC Salvage in Sacramento Ca. had a bunch of canopies there the last time I was there.

There use to be a aircraft s**** yard on Hwy 6 north of Hamilton, Ont. If I remember rightly it was north of Flamboro Speedway. There is also a plastic forming co. in Mississauga that can make a bubble up to 5 ft. in Dia. If you interested I'll find the phone #

The SFI legal windshields are listed on the manufacturer's list under dragboat capsule lids. Not sure if SFI legal is a requirement for landspeed racing, but it's a re***urance of quality. http://www.sfifoundation.com/manuf.html

Hello 29bowtie: Thanks for posting possible companies who mold Lexan. I contacted the companies and they do not heat mold Lexan, however; thanks for the leads....

 

I think I have found the place to manufacture canopies, for all those who have sent PM's and ***isted myself.....

This company manufactures pexi-gl*** canopies in various sizes, which are perfect for a tank...

Click on "Aircraft Canopy" then click on the "Berkut Canopy" . This canopy measures 19" wide, 16" tall and 38" long....

I spoke to the owner "Todd" on his cell phone, he was very helpful and glad to ***ist with a "CAR" project instead of a plane.....

He will be out of the country until July 12th 2010, but he will be checking his emails for questions, etc....

?? HOW MUCH VISION AREA IS NEEDED ... legally?????

THAT OLD MILLER race car with canopy with a narrow windshield .. would be an easier item to fab even a narrow lexan piece with a few subtle bends , center two , sides would work????

kinda like a flip up helmet visor

and the cover over your head would keep the green house efect from drying out yer roots

make your own oven out of an oil drum. could heat it with a furnace burner etc.

Might try Aircraft Windshield in Los Alametos, Ca. They have race plane canopies. Some are very small. Ask them about any "seconds" they my have. You can get a good deal through them. Ask for Judy.
