  1. 72 Pinto 2000cc. just redid the head, it's ported and polished, and has a high lift cam. motor's bored 30 over, lightened flywheel, and 40mm Solex side draft carbs. It ran good before, but had a valve seat go away. It was basically running on three cylinders. I found a crack in the head, right at the valve seat. Parts for these things motors are getting impossible to find. I found a head on craigs list, it was in Milwaukee. I got lucky, it turned out to be a good one. I hope to get it back in the car soon. Maybe I'll drive it to the HAMB drags. Here's some pics. Dean

  2. Hey Dean, that is a good looking engine. You've got a month to get it together, see you at the Drags...

I've decided to rebuild front engined Clubmans Racer with one.

I've collected some cool parts for it.

A dualpoint, a M/T cam cover, 45 Dellorto's on a modified RS2000 intake, and a engine that might have had some work done to it ( still need to open it up to check ).
Trying to figure out right now if I should Dry Sump it or not...

Not only is that one of my favorite all time thread titles but that engine is beautiful.

  6. Reminds me of my racing days. We ran a mini super T-bird with a 2000 cc pinto motor. Tube chassis, full floating disc brakes, dry sump, dual side draft webers running methanol, quick change rear. Damn near 200 hp. We were very successful with it.
Thanks for bringing back the memories...

  7. I saw the thread title and thought "this guy is suicidal"
looks very cool.. and I'll bet it sounds pretty snappy

1980's sand buggy guys used up all the Pintos....

  8. Very cool engine! makes me wonder, is Esslinger is still in business?

Esslinger is still in business. They build a lot of high power midget racing motors. 350+ horsepower from 161 cubic inches. Reputed to rev well over 10,000 rpm. Imagine an all aluminum Pinto motor with lots of titanium. The best ones go for over $30,000. Too rich for me.

A guy named Gary Bishop had one hot assed Pinto in the early seventies in Memphis. He used to send a lot of Dusters, Demons, Chevelles and the like home in shame with that thing. It was rare to catch him with the hood up, but that thing sounded like it would wind up to about 12k!

  11. Naw not HAMB worthy in the least. :D:D:D

I wish you had got in touch. There are Pinto and Thunderbird TC parts just down the road in Chillhowie.

I probably won't see you this year damn it.

  12. I used to race pinto's in the mini stock class in Monroe, Washington. Those 2000 cc motors are awesome. Thanks for bringing back some great memories.

Pintos have been cut up for the drag tracks and dirt tracks so much, that or rear ended, that you just DON"T see them on the street. Mine doesn't have a 2.3, but in the definition of a hotrod, it is one. A 3" chop looks amazing on them done right.

The pinto is not worthy of that engine.

on a slightly off topic post.... Pinto's and Mustang II are actually decent cars. They can handle like a dream.. hence... using Mustang II fornt ends on street rods and such. The engine is really quite a peach. It was strangled in the smog control era but can be made to sing. Both cars make GREAT mini-stock dirt track cars (I raced a Mustang II on the dirt for a few years) and aint too bad on road courses either. Fun cars.

as for using the engine in a hot rod? Why the hell not. Speed parts are plentiful.

having trouble finding parts? Might I suggest:

    speed parts?

Dirt trackers are twisting crazy RPM's with those lil engines. I have a buddy with a turbo'd 2000cc in a little car and it is a monster at the track turning in the 10's. The aftermarket speed parts for those little engines is pretty healthy. Plus you can still find those engines all over the place.

I bet you had everybody going with that title, the only reason they opened this thread was to give you hell. Then you floor them with the track T. NICE, but what do I know, I like Vegas.

Very nice! The engine's definitely 'HAMB-worthy'....so long as

Nice looking engine! And a word of caution; if you're going to spin it as fast as some of them get turned on the tracks, you might want to re-think that cooling fan. I think those are the kind that come apart every now and then at high RPM/s

  27. Shoot, from the title I thought maybe you had something like this;

  28. Jack Roush was being interviewed on Speedchannel. The interviewer asked him about the work he did on the 2300cc Pinto engines.
"Yeh, we did a lot of work on those little motors in the late 70's-early 80's. On the dyno we were getting 250 horsepower.............................................

Mine is a modified transmission out of a Lotus Cortina ( AKA the 2000E box ) with close ratio gears ( 1st is where 2nd used to be ) straight cut, and the tailshaft is shortened 10" so the engine and gearbox can be moved farther back into the chassis while still keeping a foot or so of driveshaft.

I'm looking for a steel flywheel for it because I'll be sitting right beside the engine/tranny and a clutch explosion would be bad.
And the aluminum bellhausing probably wouldn't stop any of the shrapnel...
