I just set a mousetrap, and it says on the plastic wrap, WARNING do not allow trap to close on fingers when set! where I grew up in Ohio , at Geneva on the lake, there was an outdoor restaurant with ceiling fans, and large warning signs, WARNING FANS!! do not carry children on shoulders!
I bought a box of soap stone sticks (for marking metal for the non welders here) and the box warned of "possible dust irrantant" during use and recommended wearing an approved resperator during use. Geez
Blame ALL of the nonsense on the lawyers and the litigious society that has been created in our country. We used to be able to suck it up or shake it off. Now everyone seems to cry and whine and look for a scapegoat to blame for their own ineptness and stupidity. "My coffee is too hot." "I didn't know if I fell off of a 20 foot ladder that it might hurt." "No one told me that I shouldn't drink bleach." The lawyers get richer and slimier, we get stupider, all the time thinking how smart we are. Every day, the bar gets lower and lower as we sink farther into ignorance and expect "someone" to come to our aid and fix our pathetic lives. Don't worry. As promised, "Change is coming." I'll keep my job, my money and my stuff. You can have the change
exactly!! the biggest thing thats stopping industry and commerce in this country is the fear of being sued and the insurance rates to protect you from the slimeballs. it's extortion, you are terrified of even opening a business because of being sued, and you have to take out millions in "protection" money to protect yourself. same with doctors, you can't get good ones anymore, they can't afford the insurance, no wonder health care is so high, you are paying for the malpractice insurance, I can understand suing someone if you are hurt from someones stupidity or if it was done on purpose, but not the sue if you make a mistake yourself. If you go in to get your tonsils out, and they cut off something far more important for instance. It's really happened. someone sue the lawyers, they are ruining the country and driving me crazy with idiot labels
It always amazes me when a myth becomes so prevalent that people actually step up and claim to have been there. http://www.snopes.com/legal/trimmer.asp I have a guy at work who swears his wife witnessed the naming of the baby, "Female" at the hospital where she works http://www.snopes.com/racial/language/names.asp Sorry, Rat...I ain't buyin' it.
I don't care what snopes says, this has been documented a number of times, people really are this stupid. When I lived in Ohio I was friends with a paramedic who took someone to the hospital for doing this very thing. the scary thing is more then one person has done it, it rates up there with the guy who flips up the grass guard and reaches inside to clear a clog, with the engine running. why do you think we have these stupid automatic brakes on the lawnmower now? I can't even pick up a stick, without having to restart the mower, all because some people are dumb enough to cut off fingers. the blade is sharp, it's spinning at high rpm, it takes a real dumbass to mess with it. I was friends with someone who on a drunk dare touched the spinning blade, we called him stumpy thumb after that. guy who was mowing the grass was lit, guy who cut off the end of his thumb was lit.
Not a warning sticker but it was a funny sticker ... "At Ford Quality is Job One" ... The sticker was upside down on my '89 Tempo.
Finally, some that thinks like I do. If they stop awarding settlements for stupidity then maybe people will stop sueing.
------------------------- Jeeze.......good thing for that warning sigh!! I mean, otherwise, who'da' ever thunk???? Mart3406 ===========================================
YES ! There are too many dumb asses that would try it then when they loose their fingers or hand will be suing the hell out of that company just because it didn't say that . This is a sue happy world ! Retro Jim
We need a new Plague That is hilarious man! I think the point is that this danger should be obvious, if you are too god damned dumb to realize this danger then it's amazing you lasted long enough to reproduce. Reproducing should be a priviledge not a right.
Kinda related...I was in an accident in October `07. I entered an intersection on a green light, other guy was trying to skate through the intersection at an accelerated speed just after his light went to red. We met in the middle. His Maxima hit my F150 hard enough to spin me completely around and about 40-feet down the road. Our insurance companies both agreed that nobody was at fault. He wasn`t happy with that conclusion. He decided to sue me,he won. Apparently, even though they agreed that I had a green light...I was in the wrong for entering the intersection without stopping first and looking both ways to make sure nobody was running the red light. I could not believe that was an acceptable outcome to the lawyer my insurance company supplied me with. This world is seriously f#cked up.
You wanna see funny/sad warning labels? Go Here:http://www.flickr.com/groups/stickfiguresinperil/pool/ It's always good for getting me to laugh when I'm down.... "Maybe we should play catch with a ball instead?"
I agree the blame game is out of control. The problem is not so much the lawers but the judges who AWARD settlements for this kind of thing. Without them, there would be no profit in these crazy lawsuits. Then people could go back to the lost art of thinking for themselves and using common sense.
Not to be blatantly argumentative, but the coffee thing always gets brought up with "stupid litigation" discussions and most of the time it's because people have no clue what the details were of the case. The basic facts: McDonalds used to sell coffee at nearly 190 degrees, causing 3rd degree burns in a couple of seconds of contact. A temperature that during the trial the company in a roundabout way conceded that it was not drinkable. The majority of other restaurants sell it at closer to 140 degrees, taking significantly longer to cause burns when in contact. McDonalds had seen nearly 700 complaints of scalding coffee previously and had settled out of court for nearly a half million dollars over the course of those claims The lady was 79 years old. The claim was that she had placed the coffee between her legs when she received it in the drive-thru. The lid was not on tight and when she moved it it spilled, quickly absorbing into her sweatpants, holding the hot liquid against her skin. She originally requested that McDonalds help her with her medical bills which required massive skin grafts and many months of recovery. The initial request was less than $20,000, Mcdonalds offered $800. There were several other attempts at settlements for medical bills prior to trial. The lawsuit resulted in a verdict that Mcdonalds was 80% at fault, the woman was at 20% at fault. She was given $160,000 in compensatory damages (80% of the actual $200,000 determined to be the cost) and then Mcdonalds was given punitive damages of $2.7 million (the equivalent of two days of coffee sales). This was later reduced to $480,000. Later Mcdonalds and the woman settled out of court on an undisclosed amount understood to be under $600,000. There are a lot of stupid litigious people out there that shouldn't be allowed to breed, but the McDonalds coffee case is far from a great example.
I have this sticker, and if the pic would show the caption on it, it says something about not bugging the shit out of me while i'm wrenching. Here it is, matter of fact
I don't know why the argument about the guy picking up his lawnmower, as long as there have been stupid people and gas powered lawnmowers, there have been cut off fingers. actually gas powered anything with blades, or a chain. you can't make anything foolproof, because fools are so ingenious. the requirement to have the automatic brake on lawnmowers was a direct result of people messing with spinning lawnmower blades and losing digits. I know someone who is a genius with machineing, well not anymore, because he's cooked his brain with drugs, but he was a total idiot when it came to common sense. I remember seeing him standing on a forklift up in a palm tree, with a chainsaw, trimming the tree, while his wife or live in girlfriend, tried to drive the forklift around, or raise and lower it with him on it, up in the air, in the meantime, they are screaming at each other and fighting, all while he's got palm branches falling everywhere. some things you just can't stick enough labels on. they needed one of those tape perimeters around them with signs that just said WARNING! stupid person area, stay out!! I lost five dollars on a bet he would cut a finger off, he was also drunk off his ass,as was she
Had a situation with a stupid move with a lawnmower occur right across the street from me when I was in highschool. A kid I knew tried pulling a running lawnmower up a set of steps and ended up cutting his foot in half. I remember his screams and my mom running across the street and wrapping his foot in a towel to keep it together till the ambulance came. Police came back a little later looking for a piece that was missing when he got to the hospital. He ended up sueing the lawnmower company. Can't remember if he won the case or not. He was a nice kid but that was a stupid move.
i just went to walmart and got my 10 month old son his first swimming pool ya know one of those $10 plastic piece of shit pools well anywho the warning label said no diving. REALLY?
