did this 64 gto chassisi this week for customer, I know narrowed rear sucks but it isnt mine... the tubing laying on the very front will come off gotta make a crossmember for the center of it with mtr mts on it for the 421 mtr
BigRed, I bleed Pontiac blue buddy. It will definitely be Poncho Powered. For now I'm using a 455 stroker deal (474 cubes) with an 871 Hampton and a couple of carbs on top.
why didnt the traditional police bust them pics of 65 and 66 ponchos?never seen any 64 pics till he posted on the actual car.I dont care, because I like most all cars.
Used to watch this make practice runs down Fenton Rd. here in Flint. Crazy car, crazier builder/driver.
Hi Guys, Making a little more progress here in Oklahoma. The front suspension is pretty close to being done. Still have to get the steering box mounted and connected but you can get an idea of how she's gonna look. Got the cool Hurst super cushion tires up front and Hurst Cheater slicks for the back. Since nobody makes fenderwell headers for a 64 GTO or any Pontiac for that matter I rounded up a set of fat fender small block chevy headers. The tube configuration is nerarly identical to a Pontiac Dport head. All I have to do is modify where they mount up with some J bends and a Pontiac flange and I'll be in business.
I'm interested in more pics of the headers when you get them done. What headers? Speedway motors? I saw some that were 1 5/8" tube. I have an old set of 4 tube d-port cheapies that were 1 5/8" I was going to use to do the same thing for my 55. Bill
55Chieftain, Yup, Speedway Motors, and I think the mfg is Dynatech. I'll have to go look again but I'm doing the same thing. Taking an old set of Hedman Hedders1 5/8" cutting off the pipes about an inch or so out, welding on some j bends I got from summit and will connect those to the new headers.
here's a few pics of a clone of Arnie's 64 that's been making the pontiac shows, and making passes down the track too!
Actually the '64/'65 GTO was an option package on the Lemans, the Tempest was the base platform, the Lemans was the pricier trim package, with most of those being hardtops, not post cars. However you do see real post GTOs from time to time. What superchargedill has there is a Tempest, not a GTO. You can tell by the taillight openings. Doesn't matter either way, awesome build!!!
I thought i'd chime in here. First i want to welcome Dil Brandow to the Hamb - something i never in a million years thought would happen. Dil and i have known each other since 1985 when we formed the Inland Empire GTO club and have been pals ever since. For those that don't know, Dil owns one bad ass 66 GTO full on 8 second drag car - thats Pontiac powered! But, this is the first time that he wants to tackle a period correct nostalgia Gasser ~ A f/x street/strip car, and at the rate and style he's going it looks like it'll look right outta 1964! Keep up the great work. Although not exactly Hamb friendly i thought some of you would overlook the moderness of the pictures i am enclosing and just appreciate pure Poncho power! Enjoy, Axle
a friend that helped me on my C/Gasser in Alaska back in the '60's sent me this pic of his '64 he races up there now at Alaska Raceway Park ,,the old Polar Dragway ,, ,,it has a 700 sumthin' inch Pontiac motor ,runs in the 8's ,,
This is me in my old Red '64 GTO "Post" at Polar Dragway , Alaska ,389 -tri-power - 4 speed ,,pic was taken in June of '66 ,,i'm in the stock eliminator final vs my buddy in the black '64 "Goat",,,ran a 13;20 to his 13;40,, No,,that white stripe wasn't factory ,,I painted that on there ,,
In '69 ,,a Army Officer brought me a brand new 'Judge" to install a straight axle and radius the rear wheel wells ,,while i was doing that ,in my shop in Anchorage ,AK ,,he took the motor to the machine shop ,when i was done ,he brought the motor for me to install ,a stroked 500 inch Pontiac with Hilborn Injection ,crazy thing tho ,,he never took it to the drags ,,drove it on the street ,,last I heard he was transfered to a base in ,or close to ,,Ohio
boy, if somebody wanted to build one for themselves, this would be a great starting point, for only $4500!
monsterflake ;; Yep ,that would be a good one ,,and at that price ?? wQw ,,good price ,,AND ,,it's a post car ,,my old '64 GTO "post" only weighed around 3400lbs ,,a few hundred pounds lighter than the hardtop version ,, I believe ,,GTO was a trim package option on the LeMans from '64 to '67 ,,in '68 the GTO became it's own model ,,i could be wrong here ,,but that's how I understood it back in the '60's ,, you still had to mark the right box on the option list to get the motor n trans you wanted ,,otherwise ,,you got a 6 banger ,,the tri-power 389 wasn't part of the GTO option package ,,it was an option of its own, same with the transmission and the 3;90 posi rear ,,
, Actually, the GTO was an option which included trim AND engine in 64 & 65. In 66 it went to it's on model. And you are correct, the option included the 389 engine and 3 speed manual tranny. Automatic, 4 speeds, tripowers, posi, etc were options also.
