I'll apologize for hijacking the other thread, I understand it's a good cause. But what the hell, after a year at his shop for a chop, and finally pulling it cause of the time frame. I was suspicious of the body work and had my car sandblasted. Underneath some serious bondo here. Most of you will argue that it's not his work, but the shop bares his name. Should he not teach his shop foremost, instead of giving seminars? Some say I don't understand tradition, but does tradition equal crap?

Did they do the wheel well area and trunk lip or just the chop?

When I would talk to him to get my car back i was pushed off from month to month for over 6 months, and finally I was given a date. When I show up, I found out he wasn't even there.

Maybe Gene was not there and they took some major short cuts? I have met Gene here at the Syracuse Nationals last weekend and he is by far a very knowledgeable man and over the years has put out his fair share of bad ass cars. But the bad thing is that when you are running a shop and have to leave it in the hands of others this type of stuff can happen. I know from working construction that when the boss is away some of the children will play. I hope everything works out for you.

has anyone contacted him directly to see whats going on? I don't think he would put his reputation on the line with that kind of work, if he knew what was going on.

Not to be a smart ass, but did you pay for metal-finished work? I imagine that there's a big difference in the final bill when someone does metal finished work and just standard custom work. I'm not defending what I'm seeing, just curious is all...

    Thats hard to look at.

  17. Well, I feel for you. Those photos definitely show some shoddy work. I suppose if it was me, I'd continue to try and reach Gene to discuss the issue.

Perhaps a conversation like "Hey Gene, I don't know if you remember me or not, but I had my car at your place for some work for a year or so, and I'm really not happy with the results. I've got some photos I can send of the work your shop did, and I'd like to talk about an agreeable resolution"...

I doubt you'll get any satisfactory resolution until you speak with Gene himself about the issues.

I wouldn't expect a job like that to cost real money.

    Hopefully it was cheap?

  19. That just sucks, no matter who did it.

IMHO if you send any car to be done for any such custom work to a shop such as this the work had better be top notch or you would be better off sending it down the road to the lowest bidder. I am not saying anything negative directly towards Gene Winfield's shop or him but just the work that is being shown here in this thread. I have to say this is amateur shit at best. I would think that Gene would shit himself if he knew this and especially being it is posted amongst many who look up to him as a pioneer in this hobby like myself.

Wow. I've never been one to agree with online bashing, but that's some pretty well documented evidence there. I've doon perhaps 20 patch panels in my life, but I'd put my work up against that stuff anyday. It looks like he used a stick welder and a claw hammer.
I have a friend here in S Oregon that does chops and body patch work in his one man shop. when he finishes the metal work it rarely even needs glazing putty. just high build prime, block and shoot. The irony is that he's always short of work cause people think they need to send it off and spend big bucks to have a big name shop do the work for them.

Sorry for your troubles. Do you have a pic of it right before it was sandblasted? I'm curious at what made you suspect.

there's something else going on here, can someone contact him when they have time so a response gets put up from him? I don't think he's much into computers, but he deserves the chance to respond to this, and it not all be one sided. I've seen his work, and I don't know whats going on, but there has to be an explanation. I'm sure he will try to make things right, once he figures out what happened.

Was this an original chop or something done earlier and sent to Windfield to be re done....

You really need to talk directly to Windshield about this. There must be a reason for what's happened....this just doesn't fit in with the history of the man. If this is the level of quality typically produced by him, where are the rest of the butcherd jobs? Thee should be hundreds of them after all the years he been doing this stuff...

if thats the unsandblasted car in your profile pics you can tell its a bondo buggy before enlarging the pics.

lockwood customs, like I said, I'm not defending the work, but I know that sometimes there's the "do it right price" and the "get it done cheap" price. I'm not saying Winfield's shop does this, but I know that others do... just trying to get some perspective before the shop goes through a serious bashing is all.
