Imagine being in your own neighborhood and being lucky enough to participate in a nationwide hot rod and kustom car show. Surrounded by friends from local area and all of the country it was a great time for me and the highlight of my year. Things got started around here Thursday night with the kickoff party at Bright Built Hot Rod shop west of Salina. Alot of folks were in attendance with hot dogs, chips, drinks, and the best homemade kettle korn were to be had for free. Me and my crew of friends enjoyed it and took a shop tour and saw cool projects, finished cars, and did our share of socializing.

Then Friday morning got off to a hot start with typical Kansas weather----hot and getting hotter. Took a few car photos but not as many as some other people who will be posting them when they get home. I thought the Gene Winfield shop truck restored by Hatfield Restorations from TX was perhaps the nicest Kustom at the show.

:) thanks for the pics! just got back from salina-i would guess about 1500 cars easy...........lots of neat cars. the drags were excellent....drags was like a time machine back to the 60's--no lights, no inspections [probably not so good]...lotsa fun....never had to wait long to run.......a really great event, but not as cool as the HAMB drags!!!!!!!!!!!!!

second photo shows the very poker faced and well known Kansas funny man---Engine Pro 5X (Bruce)

next photo is Bruce's sidekick and all around nice guy Matt (fitzbaldm) who literally saved my bacon Thursday night but I don't really want to talk about that.

next photo shows one of my personal bodyguards and big cornhusker country boy Gasserlouie (Larry)

My favorite brother in law and swap meet partner Lawrence was with us and even loaned me a 57 Chevy pickup truck from his huge Chevy truck collection. We hauled 3 of my motorbikes to the event.

Apparently attempting to corner the market on old Chevy trucks, Lawrence also bought this cool panel truck at the show on Saturday. They will use it for tailgating at K State football games and have plans to paint it. Powered by a BB 396 Chevy engine.

Friday night was so very hot and humid but we all moved across town to the old airstrip where the drags were held. A huge crowd showed up and like Bruce mentioned the Poverty Flats women had prepared a picnic supper for us guys. I think they fed about 25-30 people. I didn't take any photos at the drags. I borrowed my pal Larry's T bucket roadster and took it down the strip for my only pass this year.

Friday night after the drags, bobwop, cuzzindeke, and I went downtown and joined the huge party at Calvin's Customs shop which is in an old AMC dealership building and they had a rockin local band (The Soul Preachers) and fed everyone who hadn't already eaten free food and beer. It was a great party and I did not take any photos. We hung around with the lovely Megan and Denise, my pal Doug from NY (decayed40) and many others. Then us guys walked 2 blocks down the street to the Paramount Bar where we listened to the Psycho Devilles rockabilly band.

Saturday came early and some of my pals didn't return but new ones came along to take their place. It was fun to park next to gasserlouie again and this time his friends Frank and Frank's wife Swap Meet Cindy showed up with their awesome Chevy II gasser.

Their friend Dwight was there with his 56 gasser that ran very fast at the drags but sadly I don't have any photos of it.

I had brought my 3 motor bikes and me and the guys rode them all over the park Friday which was very fun. Saturday was too crowded to allow much of that. Lots of pedestrians cramping our style. But it was all good. At one point I was minding my own business and had turned my back on my bikes. Next thing I know out of nowhere----I was like WTF? Some biker chick was trying to hijack my super rare 1920 Henway racer.

But then I was able to relax when I saw it was only the lovely swap meet Cindy who is a Lincoln Nebraska publisher of calendars. Frank seriously needs to buy her a Harley.

One of the guys parked with me was my pal Larry who bought the "peter beater" T bucket roadster from me last year.

He ran the car hard during the drags and it did well for a little 6 banger car. Much fun indeed. He was "kind" (sneaky) enough to haul some of the Poverty Flats women down the strip.

And remember the red oxide "Rocket Sled" Model A roadster that Wingnutz in WI sold my pal Mike in Ellis, KS? It showed up in it's newly finished complete makeover. Car has been totally redone and it very nice. He ran the hell out of it at the drags and it is still very fast.

Mike parked next to us on Saturday as well. He owns BCR Restorations in Ellis, KS and also brought this fantastic Dodge Brothers roadster pu that had a hand formed body. I loved it. Belongs to his friend now but I forgot his name. Real nice guys all of them.

And then I was walking along and saw one of my own heroes----BobK from Wisconsin who is perhaps the most traveled hot rod man in the country. Her he is with his crew including Danny from California. I made Bob cover his bare chest with a towel so this would not become a porn thread.....ha ha.

Western KS farm boy "plowboy2" was here again this year with his 29 roadster with a hopped up model B banger engine, Columbia 2 speed and way cool 21 inch wheels. He told me it never rains in extreme SW Kansas so no paint is required. Been in bare metal for at least a couple of years. I love this car.

I had a great time and on Saturday night a large group of local friends and family as well as some cool Oklahoma friends went to eat at a local steak house and then went home. Many others will be posting photos that they took at the show and will include celebrities, more show cars, more famous Hambers, and the Hamb meet and greet (which I did not attend). So I hope you enjoyed my thread and watch for more to come.

  30. Good stuff Paul! Thanks for the pics. That '29 rules.
