well out with the old and in with the new. the tranny is out of a 72 pontiac grand safari station wagon th400. the motor is out of a 71 olds toranado 455. i got the front of the motor lined up and centered. i have to wait till morning to get a tranny mount and starter from advanced. i changed the valve and oil pan gaskets and pressured washed them before i put them in. one thing i would like a little help with is the motor mounts. i can see where they had a mount coming off of the timing chain cover. i really dont know if the 2 front side holes would support the weight, im worried about the bolts shearing because there really isnt anything higher for it to fit. does anybody have any sugestions? what have the 455 olds guys done in the past?
If you are talking about the hole right above the jack stand in the last pic, and the next hole back? if yes, I would run a U-saddle under the motor with fixed, welded brackets coming up to those holes. Now put Ford cushions from flatheads out at the ends of the saddle, just like a Hurst Chevy front saddle did. Then there are two small shelf brackets welded to the inside rail of the frame...the cushions sit on those. Paul just showed how to make your own saddle with a pipe bender. There likely are many ways to do it another way. EDIT, but now you need to plan your steering box and steering shaft locations if it's going to be a cross steer.
could you show where the steering will run please I think I would look at a Y mount off the motor and a FWD type of mount on the frame but not knowing where the steering is kinda makes it hard the issue with a cradle mount is it makes it tight under the car. I wasnt aware the olds FWD blocks were diffrent castings then the others. I am doing one in my 60 olds and have the same issue front motor mounts on the 394 Vs the side mounts on the newer motor. I also have the steering box at the rear just for the added pain in the ass.LOl
They are NOT a different casting. Toro just had a bracket that bolted on the front timing cover. That might work well for you. I've never sen one shear off. See the 3 side holes in the block above the pan rail? Those are the rwd mount holes. Most use the middle and rear hole - 64-87 Cutlass 442 etc and 71- up large car. 65-70 large car used the front and middle holes. .
i havent desided yet on which way it will steer. the front axle is set up for cross steer, which might be the way i go. i have a 60's stang manual box but i havent put it in place as of yet. i thought about the front mount as i was sitting there looking at the motor. i thought a little about the cross member mount. i think either of the 2 i could mount them low enought on the frame that any steering i choise would work. i also thought about the 2 biskets 1 on each side with a more traditional mounting way.
well todays mission was to see if the motor ran and check the oil pressure. it purred like a loud kitty, with 40 lbs at idle. im so happy lol. tomorrow im running down and picking up some biskets for the motor mounts and get the motor mounted. i think ill go with a cross member design with both sides droping down to it. i was waiting for them jack stands to fall, lol.
Fuxl, I like the way you did yours, very cool! I did a similar set up, but used the stock motor mounts. Like Fuxl, I also built a cross member to go under the engine. It looked like this early on: Then I built mounts to slip up inside the factory motor mounts. I welded these on top of the cross member. Not a great picture, but it's all I could find. The finished deal looks like this: Here's a couple of earlier pics with the motor mounted: Worked out fine. I have pics of it all after it's all painted & powder coated, and the mounts really don't stand out bad at all. If those pictures would help let me know, I can find them. Hope this helps a little! Dan .
Dan, I forgot to add, that your setup actually "inspired" me when I came up with mine. But I didn't like the looks of the factory rubber piece. I think you don't really see it as bad with your black motor, but I thought it was real bad with my orange motor. Love them old Olds motors, glad that more and more people use them now...
HA, cool! I have done the same thing MANY times here, always lots of good info. Yeah, the stock mounts would stick out on the orange motor. Everything on my car is black, so I don't even notice them now that it's done. Yeah, I have a soft spot for the olds too
well it was a long night. i got the motor mounts, biskets and cross member in for the motor and trans. ill get some pics tomorrow of the stuff i did, im tired lol. youtube is uploading the video now. maybe in 20 ill have the link.
Here is the one I came up with... Based off a Jet Boat motor mount. I used the part that mounted to the motor for a pattern and then determined the height for the cross bar with the Hockey pucks in place!
i was thinking about that as well. looks great. so that is where the timing tab goes to lol. i didnt get that with this motor and wondered what it went
