Projects '29 R.P.U. Build

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Mark H, Oct 5, 2009.

  1. Great fenders & associated bracketry, it's a nice European sportscar "type" touch If I may say so.

Keep up the good work - you're way ahead of me at the moment. Keep us all informed as I look forward to the updates on this build.

  2. You're killin it dude! You make me wanna put fenders on my car, almooooost!

Hi James.Glad you like it.Must admit,I'm pretty proud of the headers even though I got the table leg idea elsewhere.Let us know when you start the RPU build. Thanks

Cheers Bob.I tried a couple of other ideas to mount the fenders but, although they looked o.k.,they started to look a bit 'high tech'.Needless to say, they ended up in the scrap bin!:D

Ha Ha!Sorry man.Rest assured they can be removed in seconds. If I had my choice,I wouldn't run fenders but, unfortunately, they're a legal requirement over here.

    Cheers all,
    Mark.

Thanks Jay.I've had to get a bit creative due to my limited budget.

Got started on the bed today.I decided that as every panel needs work,I'd dismantle it completely.so I went from this......

    to this.

Considering its age,it's pretty solid. The bottom of the side panels need replacing due to rust and,the rear stake pockets have at some time, been repaired with concrete!I'll repair as neccessary then shorten the bed by 6 inches.
    Cheers,
    Mark.

Neat job on the cycle fender mounts Mark, I like the look of rivets.

The rear 'U' panel which incorporates the rear stake pockets, was in pretty bad shape. The straight lower section was shagged but the pockets were repairable so I cut them off.I folded up a new lower section from 2mm sheet steel and used some short lengths of tubing to reinforce the panel where the bolts for the tailgate hinges go through. This is the second version of this panel as I wasn't happy with the first.
The L/H stake pocket only needed minor repairs so I did that one first and used it as a patern for the repair section for the R/H side.

I made the stake pocket repair section by folding up more 2mm steel to the same profile as the straight panel, then pie cutting it,bend to shape, weld and dress.Pretty pleased with the result.
    Cheers,
    Mark.

Dougie B in hot, wet & sticky Singapore here! How the hell are you doing? Great progress on the PU since I was last there - how about the new garage though? Look forward to seeing it (the PU - doh!) in the flesh next time I'm over, sadly probably not until next year so you've got loads of time to get it finished.

    Cheers

'Hot,wet & sticky' ?You should stay out of them brothells!LOL:D
Not much progress on the new garage I'm afraid.Don't want to put too much into this place as it's looking more and more likely that we'll get bought out by property developers. It'll cost 'em though!
Should be finished by the time you get back. You're more than welcome to drop by.It'll be good to catch up.

The bed sides and lower panel have now been shortened by 6 inches. The 4 inch flange at the bottom of the bed side had to be replaced due to rust and,the flange on the lower panel was repaired. The two were joined with plug welds and rivets. The stake pockets have also been repaired and I'm in the middle of re-fitting them.

I'll hopefully have the bed re-assembled soon. And,just for the record,I FUCKIN' HATE RIVETS!
    Cheers,

Mark, Even the progress you show on the bed is inspiring for the rod you are builiding. You must be closer to getting this one on the road in a year or so . . . . .

Thanks mate!I'm still re-assembling the pick-up bed.I've been a bit side tracked recently as I'm getting ready to (hopefully!) build a new workshop.I'll up-date when the bed's back together.

Mark, unfortunately I've had to pull out at the last moment(as the preist said to the chior boy!).As I said to Tommy,I'm getting to work on the new workshop. Also,we've got property developers both sides of us and have just found out that they don't have the deeds for a paddock next to us and it may in fact be ours! So,I'm gathering evidence that it belongs with our house. All goes well and I'll be fencing it off soon, all 1.5 acres of it!:D
I could build my own dirt track.LOL.

Daaaaaamn! That's a big shop! Does the property layout limit you to the 20' dimension? Do you have the opportunity to increase it even a few feet? I think it would be well worth it. 20' could be pretty limiting whether it's the depth, but especially if it's the width. 60' sure sounds nice, though. It would shame my dinky 22'x22' garage! :)
