I'll probably get blasted for this comment, so here goes.

Build your car to your "taste" shiny, matt, pattinated (original) or faux / patina.

Do the work to the highest standard you can achieve, ( and don't ignore safety for style) then the car is your own.

Do we follow the unwritten rules like sheep? or do we dare to be different, an innovator, that's how this hobby started.

It's all about achieving a "look", we all have our favourite, cars , periods, styles yet they all fit in under the broad banner of hot rods or customs.

I admire the skill and workmanship that goes into building a highly polished billet alloy mega buck "street rod" but they are not to my taste in cars.

So if you want flat or worn looking paint, thats fine, super shiny wet looking paint is fine.I for one, don't want a super detailed shiny car that I would be afraid to use for fear of the odd stone chip etc, most buffers (restorers) I know think that super shiny modern finishes don't look right on their cars. you simply pay your money and take your choice.

those rolling bones cars are cool because of the parts used, the stance and all of that. plus they drive the hell out of them. put some shiney paint on them along with chrome and interior and they'd be 10 times better.

    thank you...

and I see way more "fake" patina cars that are done for the owner and not by the owner...

  6. John Deer blitz black and then uff the hell out of it. Or if you want a color Hot Rod flatz and the same process.

Of you want your paint to look worn then as has been suggested paint it then fine sand paper on the spots that would weather. look at old cars with worn paint to see where to sand it.

or you could just paint it and neglect it for several years out in the weather. The cheaper the paint job the quicker the results.

I'm real big on makeing your own history with a car but it takes several years to do. I'm not much of a microwaver I don't expect anything to be instant.

Brand new shiney gloss paint on an older build with so-so chrome, interior, etc, just looks wrong.

Same is true on a new build if you used all old speed parts, frame, wheels, etc, that are not mint.

Must be a way to do it with fattening agent, then hand rub most of the major panels to a duller shine, leaving the dull look in the nooks and creases, just like a hand rubbed barn find looks. I am not a fan of rubbing through to the primer, etc...yet :)

Yes but didn't you "fake patina" the chassis to match the cab? Seems you could have helped the fella out by showing him how you did that.

Well this car was painted 53 years ago, so I guess it looks too modern and polished for you, as well? :)

Just thinking out loud. A primered car in the 50s and early 60s wasn't finished. Guys would build their car, get everything dialed in and the paint job would be the cherry on the sundae. Like now, a high end candy apple or metalflake wasn't cheap and a lot of those rods never made it to final paint. No one ran a "patinated" car back then. I think a "patinated" car now is supposed to look like someone built their rod back in the day and let it deteriorate since then. Kind of a no-win situation now. If it's too shiny, it's a billet street rod or too dull and it's a faux patina car.

I think indyjps had it right, paint 'er up nice, drive it everyday and leave it in the Texas sun all day. Guaranteed patina sooner than you would think. Quicker if you compound it once a week or so...

I like the look if its not too fake looking.paint it how ya want and be proud of it!!everybody wants to judge others cars because its not to "their" taste but after reading posts on here and other forums it seems everyone has their own "idea" of what a "traditional" rod or "rat rod" or hot rod SHOULD be. I dont know why everyone has to label other peoples cars.BUILD WHAT "YOU" WANT!!! I imagine very few traditional builders build their cars with 100% old parts using 100% old techniques and NO modern machinery, welding equip. etc. wonder how many rodders got parts off the internet or advice from a forum back in the day!! I know my dad didnt!!

i saw a truck some years back where the guy laid gray primer over red primer then green paint. went after it with the 1000grit and worked it down to the primer at different levels. lettered the doors and did the same. Oh sorry forgot the part where he laid the green on with a brush. left some pretty coarse lines in it. by the time he got done sanding on it it looked like it had been in the weather for a few decades.

    Get an Earl Shieb!!!

Seriously though, Faux Patina is cool
Real patina is better, but we all can't play the waiting game [some of us like to enjoy our creations ]
I would prefer a Faux Patina Rod over a schlocky glitzty two pack billet monstrosity anyday.[20 years ago my opinion was different ]
The only true real Patina is a factory untouched original that has aged [ or detoriated ] over time, everything else is "Faux" in a true sense.
The problem with Patina is it is presently fashionable .
As with anything fashionable, there is an "In Crowd" and "Outsiders" [ similar to the 32 Ford Cult, "mines steel but yours is fiberglass", blah blah! ]
    Patina is the same!
Mine has genuine "barn fresh patina" [ even though I chopped and channelled plus engine swapped it since etc etc etc ] Yours is Faux Patina . . . . . . Blasphemy!!!!
Faux Patina is an endorsement [ or compliment ] of a Hod Rodding trend.
Just don't turn Faux Patina into fraud, this happens with vintage race car restoration where 2 identical race cars have the same history.[$$$$ is the motive]

    Yes, it is.

Single stage lacquer or enamel. bc/cc ain't traditional!

That being said, do what you want. I'm squirting enamel on mine, single stage. It's not a show piece and I don't give a damn what anyone thinks, haven't for a long time.

  30. Um, I hate to tell ya this, but we did'nt have internet and forums back "in the day".
