    Brett:

I don’t know if your dad told you the story or not, but I will share it you and anybody else who might be interested. I believe it was early in the ’68 season; I had already gotten my ’68 lightweight S/S Cobra Jet Mustang, which I was obligated to campaign in the major NHRA events. However, as we raced in NHRA for free, the income I needed to offset my racing costs was made by match racing and running (hopefully winning) non-NHRA national events, and which I planned to keep the Fairlane for. As I remember it, I was booked into a NASCAR Show at Brainerd, Minnesota, which was rained out. On the way home, swinging down through Chicago I learned of a Gas Funny Car show in the Peoria area, so I thought maybe I could get lucky and make a round or two, and the round money would keep help offset the travel costs and keep the weekend from a being a total loss. (During this period, Gasoline fueled funny cars were very popular, and the NASCAR Drag Rave Division even has a Gas Funny Car elimination as the highlight of their traveling show) My ’67 Fairlane was built to NASCAR Ultra/Stock Rules, stock-appearing body, 427 inches, carburetors, gasoline, and no more than 2% wheelbase alteration. It looked just like a production Fairlane, but it had a tube chassis, Plexiglas windows, aluminum floor, firewall and wheel tubs. I had to weight 2800 lbs for NASCAR, and had to add over 200 lbs of ballast to make that weight.

<O:pSo for this Gas Funny Car Show, I took all the ballast out, and went and made a run. To everybody’s surprise, I was one of the quickest cars in the show, running against lighter, altered wheelbase cars running fuel injection. I went on to win the event, which I think paid around $2000, good money for 1968. Your Dad was there, and was so captivated by the car; he had to have it for himself, so he asked me how much I wanted for it. I needed the car, had no plans to sell it, so I named the most ridicules figure I could think of. (I think it was $4000) Your dad not blink a eyelash, just said would take it, and it would take him a few days to get the money together. So we agreed I would return the following week to deliver the car. Your dad created a media sensation by getting the local newspaper to cover the story, and when I arrived to deliver the car, he paid me with a wheelbarrow full of pennies, 400,000 of them in fact. Thankfully, they were bagged in Federal Reserve Bank Bags, so I could carry them home a deposit them in my bank without having to spend the next month rolling them. I sold the car to your dad just as I raced it, and he had a lot of success with it. The Mustang I built to replace the Fairlane was part of the beginning of Pro Stock movement.

<O:pI am now 70 years old, and continued racing until I was 66, but with the amount of work and money needed today forcing me to quit and sell all my stuff. In March of this year I had open heart surgery to replace my Aortic Heart valve, a triple bypass, and carotid artery stent. I am now fully recovered and feel 20 years younger. Tell your Dad I sent him my best wishes.

I enclose pictures of the Fairlane, my next car, and my last ride in last car, on my 66th birthday.

    Guys,

Awesome stories/bits of info and even better pictures!!! I was a gigantic Hubert Platt/Falcon fan back when I was 16(1992) thanks to my Dad being a huge SS and FX fan back in the 60's. We decided to buy a Falcon and build a FX clone. Unfortunately our plans were bigger then both our bank accounts at the time and it never came to be. I had a 64 Fairlane 2dr Sedan daily driver at the time and after a few years of just tinkering around with them and after I got married, both eventually got sold.

Fast forward to a few days ago after I saw pictures of Hubert Platt's Falcon on here since it has resurfaced and WOW! Boy do I wish I still had MY Falcon!!!

We still go to the York US 30 event and the drags at Beaver Springs Dragway...maybe I could talk him into getting something again ;) (There is actually a '66 Fairlane 2dr hrdtp for sale locally, which is probably my Dad's favorite ford of the 60's, and Dave Lyall's pic above is a big motivator)

Anyways, again, great pics. Thanks so much!

Here is a pic of our Falcon as it sat when it was sold:

DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY INFORMATION ABOUT THIS FALCON.
I SAW IT RUN ONLY ONCE AT SOUTHEASTERN DRAGWAY IN DALLAS, GA.
NEVER SAW IT AGAIN UNTIL I SAW THIS SHOT.
THIS THING LOOKED AWSOME WITH THE FRONT WHEELS IN THE AIR.

    THANKS

    DONNIE

I've wondered about that car for a long time myself. There doesn't seem to be much information out there on it. I see you are from White, GA. Do you go over to Paradise at Calhaun any. We go over now and then. I am from Blairsville.
