Interesting. As I recall, the cars would launch pretty well, but then the 1-2 shift was goofy and inconsistent. I understand why now. What made them leave you all of a sudden ,rather than shifting into high gear?
This is the former "Run to Rund" 66 W-30 car during the '67 racing season. No longer with Rund Oldsmobile sponsorship and running in Super Stock as the 66's were forced to do.
Bob Bender, I had a couple of those Vega wonders also. A 72' Hatchback automatic, and 74' GT Wagon 4-speed. They all leaked when it rained. I didn't realize an indoor pool was part of the standard option list. Never raced them, but guessed maybe flat 19.00's Rebuilt about 200 of those motors at my fathers shop. Bore out the silicone-impregnated cylinders, and slide in the Sealed Power sleeves. Cylinder head was a joy to work on. PC
Class-Racer, Those 69' NHRA stock class proposals were great. 'Top Stock' Classes "A" thru "F" A/S (7.00-7.49) thru F/S (9.50-9.99) 9.25" slicks, after-market Aluminum DP intakes, and after-market dual-point distributors. Gasket port-matching, Total depth of cylinder head porting 1/2" (PORTS ONLY, NO BOWL AREA MACHINING). Intake manifold gasket port matching 1/2" depth, and plenum area blending up to 1/2". Would have made everything much smoother. Rear-end gear ratios capped at 5.00. Would have saved many valve-spring and valve train components. Would have liked to see the 4-4-2's in the 9.50-9.99 wt/hp (proposed F/S), with bigger slicks and aluminum intake and minor porting, as well as the 440 GTX cars. pc The other great proposal, was that they permitted a 'Specialty Replacement Engine". The 1967 versions of 327/275HP and 327/325HP. These engines (as per specification) could be utilized in the 55', 56' and 57' Chevy's, and 55' thru 61' Corvettes "ONLY". It would be allowed in "Top Stock", "Junior Stock" and "Super/Stock". Now that would have been interesting, and fun to watch.
Back in the 80's I had a 62 GP with a 63 421 HO engine that someone had put a 63 'super hydramatic' out of a Bonneville in. The had to 'massage' the tranny tunnel with a sledge hammer to get it to fit. Now that thing was a beast!
Just think of the controversy running a car in todays world with "White Power" painted on the sidewould cause. Id bet NHRA wouldnt let you run it long like that.
mtkawboy, That wording would be major trouble in this 'politically correct world'. I think 'Vanilla Power' might work though. Or maybe add the letter 'd'. "White Powder". Of course, you may have the DEA following you. pc
Yeah and the powers at NHRA probably voted for Obama also....lol. Dont ya just love having to be politiclly correct !
Class-Racer. If they went through with those 1969 proposals. And permitted the 327/325hp "Specialty Engine L-79" and/or the 327/275HP 'Specialty Engine L-30" as optional replacement engines for the 1961 and earlier Chevy 283 engines. It would have made for some interesting bed-fellows. The 327/325HP general options; A 57' 210 Hardtop could have run in SS/I or G/S. A 57' Handyman Special automatic could have run in SS/JA or H/SA. A 61' Vette could have run in SS/F or D/S. A 55' 150 Special could have run in SS/H or F/S. That L-79 engine had 11.0-1 pistons, #292 casting 2.02 heads, #3890490 aluminum DP intake, and a Holley #4150 585cfm (1 9/16" x 1 9/16") carburetor, and .447/.447 hydraulic camshaft. Boy, if it would have been allowed, all those early Chevy's could have made it fun!! pc And the 327/275HP L-30 engine. A 55' Vette in SS/H or F/S A 56' 2-door Handyman Wagon in SS/L or J/S. The L-30 engine had 10.0-1 pistons, #462 casting 1.94 heads, cast iron intake, Rochester 750cfm Quadra-Jet carburetor, and .390/.410 hydraulic camshaft. How cool would have that been!!!
Class-racer, Vic said, those were the only (2) 'Specialty Engines' to be permitted. As they wanted to keep the 55', 56' and 57' Chevy's and 55' thru 61' Vettes, (the dominant cars participating) with the newer 327 engine (as an option). Also, to add a little flavor to Super/Stock. No other 'Specialty Engines' were in the proposal, only the 327/325HP and 327/275HP, for the early Chevy's and Vette's. The 62' cars had the 327 as a standard anyway. Must have made a few Mopar guys angry. Like not making the 62' 383/343HP dual-quad allowed in 63', 64' and 65' cars. Or allowing the 426/365HP Street-Wedge allowed in the 62' and 63' cars. pc \allowed in the
Skip and Rich, You both say it's not Bobby, but you don't know who it is. It's certainly not Bernie, his hair was never that short! Terry, you're in the pic - who is it? I'll bet the "Head Ned" knows. Probably Greg also. Maybe Butch. Let's solve this mystery! John
For sure if the car had "Black Power" on it you can bet your ass those feckless, pc-corpo-turds at NHRA wouldn't dare try to censor the black guy who dubbed his car such. If anything, they'd defend his right to freedom of expression if anyone complained about it. The black/white double standard in this country is utterly disgusting. I'm not and never will be pc. Political correctness is nothing more than Marxist mind control that originated in the Bolshevik "worker's paradise" of eastern Europe some 93 years ago. DEATH to political correctness!! Pete
"Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end."
Assuming that your comment was 'in jest" - I just wanted to add a pic of my "arch- rival" back in 'the day" -- Enjoy
Pat McVicar's car was formerly Billy Izykowski's "Kicks" car Last time I saw Pat was the same night I saw Butch Yurick last.....at a get together at Jackee Allens house......That was quite a while ago.....I'm guessing 20 years !!! Geez....time flys..... The mystery NHRA man.... Does not look like Frank Sulc to me.... Does not look in any way like Bobby Doerrer to me Still looks a lot like Bernie A to me but since Bernie was usually always racing a car....it does not seem likely it is him..... Bernie had a number of cars before and after the Corvette.....
Seems I remember him driving another 66 named BAD FINGER mostly at Island. Was this the same car relettered?
I don't recall that car name.... I think Pat had a /MP car at one time.....Maybe a '57 Nomad wagon...... I also recall some kind of bad towing accident and I think Pat was hurt and the Biscayne was wrecked....Not sure there as it is many many years ago Pat was a regular at Tony Feil's........The big round decal on the sail panel on the Biscayne is the Tony Feil Competition Engines logo....
This was the car (Fun, Fun, Fun) that met it's demise on the way to a points meet at York. It wound up face first into a boulder when the tow car and it did a snake dance.. He drove for John Zibor for awhile after that. The Bad Finger car was a 6 cyl Biscayne that Pat found in Pennsylvania and turned into a big block car (including the dash tach). It ran as a SS/F car and after he sold it he drove a B/MP Nova for Joe Corbo. I believe that was the last race car he drove. The Bad Finger car was the one they made him tape over "the finger" that Mr. J had painted on the roof (it was huge) when he raced it at Indy. PC way back when.
I think that 'White Power' name might have been permitted in some 'southern' states, without a problem. I wonder if the driver wore a 'hood', instead of a helmet Stay pc
Class-Racer, 1962 was the first year for the 327 in the Vette's, not 63'. 62' Engine ratings,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,70'/71'/72' class rating * 327/250HP (4-barrell Carter 450cfm WCFB),,,,,,,,,,J/S or SS/L * 327/300HP (4-barrell Carter 625cfm AFB),,,,,,,,,,,,,F/S or SS/H * 327/340HP (4-barrell Carter 625cfm AFB),,,,,,,,,,,,,D/S or SS/F * 327/360HP (Fuel Injection),,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,............C/S or SS/E Note; No Dual-quad intake assemblies were factory produced for 62'. They should have! I don't think the 62' Vette's were the most desired Vette's for drag racing, in Stock or Super/Stock. You can go on the Vette site for further information. The 327/250HP engine was the base engine for the Vette's 62' thru 65'. The 327/300HP engine was the base engine for the Vette's 66' thru 68'.
Just got an e-mail from Berserko Bob. He states that despite the strong resemblance (look here - http://www.bbobslounge.com/Gallery/content/Photos/37.jpg) he doesn't remember that picture or location. Normally that would settle it but there are so many things from that era that Bob doesn't remember I would say it's still inconclusive
